The Acme Novelty Library (Pantheon Graphic Novels), by Chris Ware

Utterly eschewing the general bonhomie surrounding the newly-minted contemporary regard for the comic strip medium as a language of complicated personal expression and artistic sophistication, professional colorist and award-winning letterer F. C. Ware returns to the book trade with “The ACME Novelty Library,” a hardcover distillation of all his surviving one-page cartoon jokes with which he tuckpointed the holes of his regular comic book periodical over the past decade.

Sometimes claimed to be his “best work” by those who really don’t know any better, this definitive congestion of stories of the future, the old west, and even of modern life nonetheless tries to stay interesting by including a luminescent map of the heavens, a chart of the general structure of the universe, assorted cut-out activitites, and a complete history of The ACME Novelty Company itself, decorated by rare photographs, early business ventures, not to mention the smallest example of a Comic Strip ever before offered to the general public. All in all, it will likely prove a rather mild disappointment, but at least it catches the light in a nice way and may force a smile here and there before being shelved for the next generation’s ultimate disregard and/or disposal.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. With all his literary accolades and awards, it's easy to forget Ware (Jimmy Corrigan) is one of the warmest, funniest cartoonists in America. The Acme Novelty Library collects a few issues of Ware's comic book series by the same name and adds plenty of new pages and visual delights. It is, like all of his work, an utterly immersive experience. You're not just reading his comics, you're inhabiting his world: from fake ads to diagrams for paper models to a lengthy and very funny fictional history of the Acme Novelty Company. These strips combine complex and beautiful visuals with the humor of hapless, often sad characters in ridiculous predicaments. "Rusty Brown", a series of strips based around an obsessive collector who will be the subject of Ware's next graphic novel, is particularly strong. These comics showcase Ware's unusual sensitivity towards his characters, building an incisive, multi-dimensional portrait of Brown and his friend Chalky White. On top of all of these riches there is Ware's own personal "history of art" in cartoon form, and a multi-page story about a naked superhero. Combining surreal humor, cutting satire, stunning visuals, and empathic characters, Ware's latest is a wondrous journey into the universe of a master cartoonist in peak form. (Sept.)

From Booklist
The latest from comics artist extraordinaire Ware is rather a hodgepodge. It consists largely of individual, full-page strips that originally appeared in an alternative weekly. But what it lacks in cohesiveness it makes up for in virtuosity, demonstrating why Ware is at the forefront of the medium. The tabloid-sized collection samples all Ware's recurring characters: forlorn spaceman Rocket Sam, nebbishy rodent Quimby the Mouse (eponymous star of Ware's previous collection, 2003), bovine cowboy Big Tex, the futuristic consumer from Tales of Tomorrow, a silently arrogant superhero who is either Superman or God, and even the eponymous protagonist of Ware's breakthrough graphic novel, Jimmy Corrigan (2000)--all of them limned in Ware's formally complex narrative manner. More straightforward are strips featuring obsessive toy collector and social outcast Rusty Brown, portrayed with little of the sympathy Ware extends to his other creations, including Rusty's boyhood pal, Chucky White. The volume also features some of Ware's meticulous, nostalgia-fueled renditions of vintage advertisements and an eyestraining faux history of the Acme Novelty Company. Everything impressively attests Ware's mastery. Gordon Flagg

I'd give it six stars but....
By J. A. Goodman
Even if you don't read this book you will get a chill just looking at it, as it is truly a beautiful "objet de art" and not just a collection of comics. The design of each page is a work of art in and of itself and I get a shiver just beholding each one. While ANL claims it is a report to "shareholders" it is really a collection of single page "jokes" that sometimes form a sustained narrative....It's very unlike Ware's Jimmy Corrigan book, as it can be read in no particular order and still make a load of sense. There are also some nice gimmicks included like toys you can build, mini-comics you can "bind", a glow in the dark map of the stars, a wrap-around band that contains a comic, and even the world's smallest comic included along the edge of the book. The colors, are bright, bold and rainbow like, the stories are all over the spectrum from hilarious to cringe inducing pathos, the actual Acme history is quite entertaining, and then there are the ad parodies.....You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wish they were real....basically ANL provides hours of entertainment for the price of a nice dinner, especially if ordered from Amazon.....I can hardly wait for Ware's next book which I hear is coming out in the next couple of months. Move this book to the top of your buying list....

Chris Ware: The Tarkovsky of Comic-Makers
By Nicholas R. Brown
Getting this book in the mail after having immensley enjoyed Jimmy Corrigan was comparable to my best xmas present-opening experiences as a kid - a feeling I assumed would not occur again, now that I'm a dried-up adult. I got it alongside acme novelty library 16 + 17, which I ordered whilst drunk and deeply regretted until recieving them. Wow! I simply cannot beleive something this amazing exists. I suggest reading 16 + 17 first, as there are secrets about Rusty Brown's fate that you may want to save until after you've got yourself into the 'Rusty-Brown-as-a-child' storyline. A large portion of this book involves middle-aged rusty, so... Well, its up to you. I can see the merit of reading it in the reverse order as well. Either way, this book is just utterly amazing - I haven't enjoyed any comics remotely this much, since reading Twisted Tales in my youth. I still have the final 3 pages left, and am quite excited! (Other reviewers say its the best ending ever, so I'm going to save it...

You are a disgrace to humanity if you pass this up.

Opulent tragedy!
By W. Creswell
Chris Ware's tragicomic characters are experiencing the dramas of life that most people would rather not admit even exist. Divorce, hate, ambivolence, child abandonment (a disturbing recurrence in Ware's work.), mental cruelty, substance abuse, murder, shame, self-loathing, etc. This is coupled with very dark tounge-in-cheek humor of the kind that makes you wonder if you should really be laughing or not. (You should.) Above it all is Ware's astounding design work. Nobody but NOBODY can create a world as fine and obsessively detailed as Chris Ware. Endless throwbacks to Victorian book design, Advertisments from early 20th century to comic book styles of the 50s. He has created a unique enviroment that is as dazzlingly brilliant to look at, as it is uneasy to read. I've never been dissapointed by Ware's work and this is no exception. This does collect previously released work from his Acme Novelty Library so if you already own all of those issues this may not be for you. However it is a terriffic collection and a must for fans, modern comic enthusiasts or people just interested in fantastic book design.

Success by Pincott
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca
This book reads like a Profiles in Success story. There are

hundreds of bright musings by contemporaries from John Stuart Mill

to Aristotle Onassis to Albert Einstein. John Stuart Mill discussed the interconnectedness of ideas. Aristotle Onassis said that success comes from knowing something that no-one else knows.

In the case of Aristotle Onassis, he purchased fleets of surplus

United States carriers for practically nothing. Then, he turned

around and utilized them to deliver world oil. Albert Einstein

labelled work as "x", play as "y" and silence as "z".

This volume is perfect for students of literature, journalism,

historical buffs and generalists everywhere.

If you like quotes for papers this is good reference material...
By K. L Sadler
This was a gift from someone. I usually go looking for specific quotes on topics when writing a paper, or giving a speech, and this book is a good compilation of quotes pertaining to achieving success in your life, or as to what constitutes success. This includes sections on topics like competitiveness, aggressiveness, setting up goals, etc. I usually enjoy reading books like these through when I get them so I have an idea of what quotes there are, by whom, and where I can find them. It's a lot easier to find quotes online nowdays, and so I don't need to have books around like this, but it is always a useful reference to have laying around.

I Cannot Tell a Lie, Exactly, by Mary Ladd Gavell

It is the stuff of fiction: A collection of stories, never made public, is lost in a drawer for thirty years until, miraculously, the stories are discovered and published. It is also the true story of the book you are holding in your hands.

Mary Ladd Gavell died in 1967 at the age of forty-seven, having published nothing in her lifetime. She was the managing editor of Psychiatry magazine in Washington, D.C., and after her death, her colleagues ran her story "The Rotifer" in the magazine as a tribute. The story was, somehow, plucked from that nonliterary journal and selected for The Best American Short Stories 1967. And again, thirty-three years later, "The Rotifer" emerged from near obscurity when John Updike selected it for The Best American Short Stories of the Century. In his Introduction to that collection, Updike called Gavell's story a "gem" and said that her writing was "feminism in literary action."
"The Rotifer" has remained, until now, Gavell's only published work.

The sixteen stories collected here include the anthologized classic "The Rotifer," in which a young woman learns the extent to which a bit of innocent interference, or the refusal to interfere, can change the course of lives. "The Swing" depicts a mother's strange reconnection to her adult son's childhood as she is summoned outside, night after night, by the creak of his old swing. "Baucis" introduces a woman longing for widowhood who is cheated of the respite she craves and whose last words are tragically misunderstood by her family. The title story, based on the last-minute announcement by Gavell's own son that he was in a school play, is infused with the gentle humor and vivid insights that make all of Mary Ladd Gavell's stories timeless and utterly beguiling.

With the publication of I Cannot Tell a Lie, Exactly, Mary Ladd Gavell takes her rightful place among the best writers of her, and our, time.

Amazon.com Review
In the introduction to this first (and only) collection by the late Mary Ladd Gavell, who died in 1967, the author's son calls her "something of an early feminist." And indeed, the women she writes about do share certain feelings of emptiness and longing, whether they're elicited by inattentive husbands, the empty-nest syndrome, or postpartum depression. In "The Infant," for example, Gavell's protagonist, Margaret, feels little of the conventional adoration a mother is supposed to feel for her newborn child: "She looked at the little gnomelike figure in her lap, and she thought, I suppose he'll be cute when he's two, and we shall be terribly proud of him and wouldn't be able to imagine life without him, but all I can think of now is that I wish we hadn't had him." So much for maternal warmth. Yet the author guides us so nonchalantly through Margaret's state of mind that it becomes impossible to judge her.

Elsewhere, Gavell is similarly revealing about the complexities of women, the hardships they endure, and the possibilities they have the potential to encounter. Yet this former managing editor of Psychiatry magazine seldom takes a rigidly feminist stance: she's more concerned with the psychological labyrinths of the human mind. It's a shame that these beautifully written stories--of which only one, "The Rotifer," has been published before--will constitute Gavell's entire literary legacy. All the more reason, then, to read and cherish them. --Yvonne Schindler

From Publishers Weekly
The story behind this collection is nearly as intriguing as the collection itself. The late Gavell was the managing editor of Psychiatry magazine and wrote stories, all unpublished, in her spare time. When she died at the age of 47 in 1967, the magazine published one of her stories "The Rotifer" as a tribute. The story was chosen for 1968's Best American Short Stories and then tabbed last year by John Updike for the Best American Short Stories of the Century, standing alongside those of Cather, Fitzgerald, Bellow, Carver and others. The 16 short fictions collected here prove that "The Rotifer" was no fluke; its easy complexity and sudden punch may remind readers of Alice Munro. Gavell's territory is that quintessential 1960s phenomenon, the nuclear family. With straightforward, cutting prose she unveils lives of elegant despair, much like Lorrie Moore, if Moore's characters were housewives who made appearances at the American Legion Hall. In "The Swing," an elderly woman is patiently sharing a house with an ailing husband. Their only son, emotionally reserved and uncommunicative, lives on the other side of town. One evening he walks into her backyard except that it's her son of 30 years earlier, a warm, enthusiastic seven-year-old boy. The denouement is a gentle surprise. Gavell demonstrates her range in "Sober, Exper., Work Guar.," in which she inhabits the unconsciously funny voice of a working-class plasterer plying his trade in an upper-class home. If anything dates these stories, it's that they feature neat endings, but many readers may find comfort in that now-rare style of short-story writing. Anthony Gavell's tribute to his mother and an introduction by Kaye Gibbons illuminate Gavell's qualities as a writer and as a woman of her times. Agent, David McCormick.

From Library Journal
Gavell's only published story, the puzzling but intriguing "The Rotifer," appeared posthumously in 1967 but was selected for The Best American Short Stories of that year and then again by John Updike as one of the Best American Short Stories of the Century. It is collected here with the other stories Gavell, an editor at Psychology Today??, wrote in her spare time. They are a mixed bag: most focus on fairly routine domestic issues but with an undercurrent of dissatisfaction and rage. In "Boys," a mother addresses her instinctual fear of the mysterious male species. "Baucis" tells of a woman whose family patronizes her and fails to understand her, right up to and beyond her death. The less successful stories employ flat, stock characters that seem to exist only to illustrate a predetermined point. The title tale is a charming family scene, though perhaps a bit too cute and with a telegraphed resolution. For larger public libraries.

Sad That She Is Not Here
By taking a rest
"I Cannot Tell A Lie, Exactly", is a wonderful group of short stories by a writer that did not live to see them published, nor the enjoyment her words would bring to readers. And these stories are excellent not because of the unusual path they took to publication, rather because they are extremely well written. The book is also bracketed by touching tributes by her children.
The book contains 16 stories including, "Rotifer", which when published alone was selected as one of The Best American Short Stories Of 1967, and then was honored by its inclusion in The Best American Short Stories Of The Century. And this was a story that was originally published as a tribute to the writer in a non-literary journal, which makes this book's journey all the more interesting.
Virtually all of these tales describe situations that any member of a family will find familiar. Had they been written and published earlier, they would in many instances have been classic stories for the likes of The Saturday Evening Post together with the well-known covers of Norman Rockwell. This is not to say that all her stories are as idealized as many people feel Rockwell's paintings were. Just as he portrayed some of the darker sides of human nature, Mary Gavell touches on nerves that are either raw, or have the probability of developing painfully.
Two of my favorites are, "The Swing", and the story that is also the title of this book. It is a rewarding experience to read these stories that so nearly were lost. That this is the only collection takes nothing away from the work, and for those who take the time to read this lady's words, they will be well rewarded.

A wonderful short story collection -- A real discovery!!
By William Merrill
To paraphrase one of the blurb quotes, I was drawn to this collection by the posthumous publication situation (summarized well in the "Editorial reviews" section above), but I stuck around for the marvelous short stories. Ms. Gavell's tales are very well written slices of life, but always with a bit of whimsy or oddness thrown in to keep things interesting. Unlike works by the "literary elite" who usually draw the kind of praise this book has garnered, the stories in "I Cannot Tell A Lie, Exactly" are easy to read. Each one is a captivating gem, filled with details that paint pictures of the characters and make them into the kind of people you'd like to meet. Despite the fact that these pieces were written forty years ago (or more), the language is rarely dated in any way. With the unique appeal and quiet wisdom of Ms. Gavell's writing, I expect this collection will endure for many decades to come. One suggestion, though -- skip the gaseous introduction (by Kaye Gibbons).

Black and Blue: A Novel, by Anna Quindlen

With this stunning novel about a woman and a marriage that begins in passion and becomes violent, the Pulitzer Prize--winning journalist and bestselling author of One True Thing and Object Lessons moves to a new dimension as a writer of superb fiction. "If literature were judged solely by its ability to elicit strong emotions," Kirkus Reviews said about One True Thing, "columnist-cum-novelist Quindlen would win another Pulitzer."  And the same will be said about Black and Blue, a brilliant novel of suspense, substance, and importance.

In Black and Blue, Fran Benedetto tells a spellbinding story: how at nineteen she fell in love with Bobby Benedetto, how their passionate marriage became a nightmare, why she stayed, and what happened on the night she finally decided to run away with her ten-year-old son and start a new life under a new name. Living in fear in Florida--yet with increasing confidence, freedom, and hope--Fran unravels the complex threads of family, identity, and desire that shape a woman's life, even as she begins to create a new one. As Fran starts to heal from the pain of the past, she almost believes she has escaped it--that Bobby Benedetto will not find her and again provoke the complex combustion between them of attraction and destruction, lust and love.

Black and Blue is a beautifully written, heart-stopping story in which Anna Quindlen writes with power, wisdom, and humor about the real lives of men and women, the varieties of people and love, the bonds between mother and child, the solace of family and friendship, the inexplicable feelings between people who are passionately connected in ways they don't understand. It is a remarkable work of fiction by the writer whom Alice Hoffman has called "a national treasure."

Amazon.com Review
Oprah Book Club® Selection, April 1998: "The first time my husband hit me I was nineteen years old," begins Fran Benedetto, the broken heroine of Anna Quindlen's Black and Blue. With one sweeping sentence, the door to an abused and tortured world is swung wide open and the psyche of a crushed and tattered self-image exposed. "Frannie, Frannie, Fran"--as Bobby Benedetto liked to call her before smashing her into kitchen appliances--was a young, energetic nursing student when she met her husband-to-be at a local Brooklyn bar. She was instantly captivated by his dark, brooding looks and magnetic personality, but her fascination soon solidified into a marital prison sentence of incessant abuse and the destruction of her own identity. After an especially horrific beating and rape, Fran realizes that the next attack could be the last. Fearing her son would be left alone with Bobby, she escapes one morning with her child. Fran's salvation comes in the form of Patty Bancroft and Co., a relocation agency for abused women that touts better service than the witness protection program. Armed only with a phone number, a few hundred dollars, and the help of several anonymous volunteers, Fran begins a new life. The agency relocates her to Florida, where she becomes Beth Crenshaw, a recently divorced home-care assistant from Delaware. Fran and her son adapt, meeting challenges with unexpected resilience and resolve until their past returns to haunt them. Quindlen renders the intricacies of spousal abuse with eerie accuracy, taking the reader deep within the realm of dysfunctional human ties. However, her vivid descriptions of abuse, emotional disintegration, and acute loneliness at times numb the reader with their realism.

From School Library Journal
YA?This powerfully written story grips readers from the very first page. Fran and Bobby are crazy about one another from the moment they first meet, but his violent nature reveals itself even before they are married. Later, the "accidents" become more and more frequent and harder to hide: a broken collarbone, a split lip, a black eye. Finally, Fran escapes the abusive marriage, but by then she is damaged both inside and out. Assisted by a group that aids battered women, she flees with her 10-year-old son, Robert, who knows the truth but is reluctant to believe that the father who loves him so much could beat his mother so badly. Fran begins a new life with a new identity, but she lives in fear, knowing that Bobby won't rest until he finds them. Also, Robert longs for his father. Love between parent and child, coming to grips with the difference between passion and love, the importance of honesty in relationships, and self-knowledge as an essential part of healing?YAs can learn much about these and other themes in this novel about a shattered family and a strong woman determined to rebuild her life.?Molly Connally, Kings Park Library, Fairfax County, VA

From Library Journal
Fran Benedetto has had enough of her self-centered husband's brutality. Though Fran has long loved Bobby passionately, his roughhousing turned into abuse early in their marriage, when the stress of his police career began taking its toll. Fran's concern about the situation's effects on Robert, her too-quiet ten-year-old, together with a particularly vicious battering, goads her to run. An underground organization helps her flee with Robert to a small Florida town, where she begins a new life as "Beth Crenshaw." At first the fugitives are miserable, but gradually they settle into the community with a kind of family normalcy they have never experienced. As Fran/Beth strains to make a home, she also struggles with her beliefs about family, love, and her own identity. And, during every seemingly safe moment among her new friends, she lives with the fear of discovery and its possibly lethal consequences. Quindlen (One True Thing, LJ 9/15/94) has created in her third novel a well-paced narrative whose themes reflect important contemporary social concerns. Though Fran's internal musings sometimes slow down the action noticeably, and the crucial character of Bobby is a one-dimensional sketch, the book's pluses will outweigh its drawbacks for most readers of popular fiction.

Running away from spousal abuse
By Ratmammy
Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen
A novel about an abused woman's path to freedom, BLACK AND BLUE introduces us to the world of Fran Benedetto, a woman who is beaten and emotionally abused every day by the only man she's ever loved, her husband Bobby.
Fran lives day by day in a type of fear that can't even be described. A wrong word or a wrong look - anything could set off Bobby's anger. A broken nose or a black eye -- Bobby lashes out at Fran in any way he can. It seems to start out as a mistake, a fluke, but as the years go by, Bobby continues to beat Fran for the slightest thing, and does not see anything wrong in what he does to her.
The fact that Bobby is a policeman makes this a scarier ordeal for Fran. Bobby knows that even if Fran goes to the police, no one would believe that he had beaten up his own wife. His reputation on the force seems to be legendary. On the other hand, if Fran did try to go to the police, no one could protect her from his wrath after finding out what she did.
Fran keeps these abuses and fears to herself. Her son Robert asks Fran, "how did that happen?" when he sees her with a black eye. Fran always has an answer, always avoids telling him the truth. And Robert looks the other way. Although old enough to understand what is happening, he is still too young to want to accept such a thing happening between his parents. So he chooses to pretend that everything is ok.
Fran could only take so much abuse. She takes their son Robert and leaves for Florida under the guidance of Patty Bancroft, a leader of a group that helps battered women like Fran by relocating them with a whole new identity, saving them from the men that are abusing them. Fran starts a new life with a new name, and slowly things begin to fall in to place. But, no matter what Patty tells her, Fran feels that Bobby will one day find them. And when he does, Fran knows her life is over.
BLACK AND BLUE was one of those books that kept me glued to every page. What surprised me is that I did not cry once or feel any real strong emotions while I read this book except for fear. The book for me was more like a suspense novel, and secondarily a novel about spousal abuse. The author focused more on Fran's attempt to forge a new life for herself and her son and on her every day fears that Bobby would eventually find her. With that said, I highly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it. It was an Oprah Selection, but for me it was not as typical a choice as some of her past books.

A veiw from the bench
By C. Ellen Connally
I am a Municipal Court Judge who handles a lot of domestic violence cases. I liked "Black and Blue" but found some aspects of the story a little hard to believe. When Fran left she had a pretty "fairy tale" life. It was a little hard to believe that she could live rent free all that time and work on the almost "casual" level that she did. It seems that she would have been more finacially strapped. Aside from being a judge, I was also a single mother and I know from practical experience how tough it can be. Meeting the gym teacher was a little far fetched. Trust me, you don't meet single men with no baggage. People in the know say that women tend to get hooked up with the same kind of guy as their ex. But I give Fran a lot of credit. She did break free and that's what you have to do. But it was a tough decison and I don't want women to think that they will have it as easy as Fran. Whether it's alcohol, drugs or an abusive relationship you have to make a break and look out for number one. The book is well worth reading for those who are victims of domestic violence or those who work with victims and offenders. One of the early reviews said this was the UNCLE TOM'S CABIN of domestic violence. I wouln't go that far, but it's a quick read and very readable. It does not compare to PARADISE, which was a terrible selection. Shame on Oprah for picking her friend's book! I'm working on a PHD and I can't understand Toni Morrison!

Great book. Really captured the mindset of a domestic abuse victim. Character was very relatable and the book had in depth evaluations of things without getting too wordy. Highly recommend if you were a victim of domestic abuse or if you want a better understanding of their mindsets.

Also, the last few pages provide useful common expressions, verb uses, plural forms, etc. The print is a necessarily a little small and the compact size limits vocabulary a bit. Still, this superbly practical dictionary served me well as I traveled solo in Mexico, Guatemala, and in several nations in South America.

Great Pocket Size Spanish Resource
By M. Hodge
As a student in a Spanish language school I constantly am referring to this dictionary. I keep it in the front pocket of my backpack and have used this one more than my larger Spanish-English Dictionary. I have found that unless it is some obscure word, you're going to find what you need in this pocket-size one. The cover is heavy duty so it has handled the wear of nearly a year of classes.

Why They Kill: The Discoveries of a Maverick Criminologist, by Richard Rhodes

Richard Rhodes, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb, brings his inimitable vision, exhaustive research, and mesmerizing prose to this timely book that dissects violence and offers new solutions to the age old problem of why people kill.

Lonnie Athens was raised by a brutally domineering father.  Defying all odds, Athens became a groundbreaking criminologist who turned his scholar's eye to the problem of why people become violent.  After a decade of interviewing several hundred violent convicts--men and women of varied background and ethnicity, he discovered "violentization," the four-stage process by which almost any human being can evolve into someone who will assault, rape, or murder another human being.  Why They Kill is a riveting biography of Athens and a judicious critique of his seminal work, as well as an unflinching investigation into the history of violence.

Amazon.com Review
In Why They Kill, Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Rhodes traces the life and career of criminologist Lonnie Athens, a man who took his own sad and squalid life and turned it on its head to make a groundbreaking career as a criminologist. Athens grew up in a violent, angry world. Rather than absorbing the sickness and violence around him, though, he studied it, and eventually developed a theory about how violent criminals are created. Rhodes's critical examination of Athens's work forces readers to consider how violent our society really is, how it became that way, and what might be done to change it. When applied to well-known criminals such as Michael Tyson and Lee Harvey Oswald, Athens's ideas become concrete and take on an urgent tone: it's easy to discuss theories and predictors in the abstract, but these stories are real, and they repeat themselves in our society at an alarming rate. Rhodes's approach to this disturbing subject stands apart from many other crime books in its intelligence, humanity, and empathy. These are not just descriptions of "scumbags" and their brutal crimes, but intensely personal stories that reveal how a culture of violence propagates itself. --Lisa Higgins

From Publishers Weekly
What transforms an ordinary person into a violent criminal? Not genetic inheritance or low self-esteem or coming from a violent subculture, answers Pulitzer PrizeAwinning author Rhodes (The Making of the Atomic Bomb, etc.), but rather a process of brutalization by parents or peers that usually occurs in childhood. In this provocative study, Rhodes focuses on the work of criminologist Lonnie Athens, who teaches at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. Athens believes that violent crime results from "social retardation," a process whereby an individual who was abused in childhood guides his or her actions by recourse to a "phantom community" of the internalized voices of caregivers and others. Rhodes tests Athens's theory against specific cases, including those of boxer and convicted rapist Mike Tyson; Cheryl Crane, daughter of actress Lana Turner, who at age 14 stabbed to death her mother's lover; and Lee Harvey Oswald. The author champions Athens as a pioneering genius battling a criminological establishment that ascribes violent crime to psychopathology or antecedent social conditions; yet he overestimates the originality of Athens's work (the "phantom community" in some ways resembles Freud's superego), and his well-intentioned study is at times belabored. Both Rhodes and Athens suffered through horrifically abusive childhoods, which adds a compelling personal note to this study but may also color their views. Rhodes strongly endorses Athens's call for school-based prevention programs to break the cycle of domestic and societal violence. Agents, Morton Janklow and Anne Sibbald, Janklow & Nesbit Associates. From Library Journal
Drawing on exhaustive interviews with violent prison inmates, criminologist Lonnie Athens asserts that people do not commit violent crimes because they live in poverty, are mentally ill or on drugs, have a genetic predisposition to violence, "just snap," or have been brutalized as children (though the latter plays a part). Rather, they have undergone a four-step "violentization" process that leads them, under certain circumstances, to decide consciously to beat, rape, or kill. Together with Athens's own hardscrabble, violence-filled upbringing, this theoryAderived as it is from qualitative rather than quantitative researchAhas made his existence within the academic community difficult. Rhodes, a Pulitzer Prize winner (The Making of the Atomic Bomb) and himself a victim of childhood violence, offers a compelling look at Athens, his work, and its application to noted violent offenders, different eras and cultures, and men at war. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

Brilliant

Richard Rhodes is an outstanding writer as anyone who has read "The Making of the Atom Bomb" can attest. His writing is well researched, clearly written and often hard to put down.
His latest book, " Why They Kill : The Discoveries of a Maverick Criminologist" is an eye opener. Criminologist, Dr. Lonnie Athens new approach to understanding violence in humans turns some psychiatric theories upside down. His discoveries originated from his own extremely violent background. Athens claims that rapists, violent killers (including serial killers) know what they are doing and why. To the majority of us it is incomprehensible that anyone would commit such heinous acts with what appears to be little or no provocation. He shows, by example, how those who have gone through what he calls the four stages of violentization, think and react.
Athens states that if an individual is interrupted at any stage before he or she has gone through the fourth stage of violentization, the individual can be reformed. However, once the fourth stage has been completed, there is no hope of redemption.
What lends a particularly reactive note on the part of the reader is the inclusion of well known personalities and their individual stories of violentization. Athens describes the backgrounds of Mike Tyson, Alex Kelly, Lee Harvey Oswald and other infamous characters. He also points out how and why soldiers were affected by the violence during the Vietnamese war and its aftermath.
Toward the end of the book Athens suggests how the cycle of violence can be broken. The cycle was broken in time for Athens and for Rhodes, who was also on his way to a violent outcome. Their redemption was serendipitous. For the majority of those who are on the road to violentization and are not so lucky, society must intervene in order to prevent the terrifying result.

A Superb New Work by a Superb Reporter
By jack olsen
I regard WHY THEY KILL as the most important book on the mind of the criminal since Dr. Hervey Cleckley's monumental study of psychopathy: THE MASK OF SANITY. Unlike self-ordained crime guru and speed-writer Joyce Carol Oates, who damned this book with her customary hauteur in the New York Times, I have been studying violent criminality at close range for 50 years, and Richard Rhodes showed me something valuable and new on every page. His ability to explicate and illuminate the most complex processes is in the tradition of great journalists like John McPhee, Gail Greene, Norman Mailer, Joseph Mitchell, Shana Alexander, James Stewart and Fox Butterfield. I hope this book gains Richard Rhodes another shelf of well-deserved awards.

Brilliant, timely, and urgently needed

This book contains the criminologist, Lonnie Athens' compelling new argument about the process that creates violent criminals. The media frequently portrays criminal violence as senseless or inexplicable, while psychology explains it with theoretical models that are incomplete and often incorrect. Athens explores the creation of violent criminals from a sociological perspective but avoids the traditional method of statistical examination. Instead, Athens takes an analytical approach by interviewing convicted violent offenders and extracting common modes of thought and behavior from their testimony. The result is a compelling theory of "violentization", which is the term Athens uses to describe the socialization that ordinary people experience before they become violent criminals.
Violentization is a process that involves several steps. Generally a person experiences brutality, humiliation, helpless exposure to someone else's victimization (personal horrorfication), violent coaching, and a violent personal revolt against real or perceived aggressors. By the time a person goes through this process the person's violent socialization is largely complete. Athens explains that socialization isn't so much a response to one's community but a response to a perceived or "phantom" community that is based on the person's experiences, memories, and recurring conversations from the past. When individuals experience violentization they develop a violent phantom community which influences their response to events in their lives. When these people resort to violent behavior they are not doing so in a senseless or medically deficient fashion, they are simply responding to a different moral framework and set of rules than individuals who haven't experienced violentization. The implication of this theory is that (1) there is a logical reason for violent behavior, and (2) the socialization of violent behavior is preventable.
"Why They Kill" offers compelling evidence to support Athens' theory. First, the author, Richard Rhodes examines the lives of several famous violent offenders and explains how they underwent the process of violentization. Even more compelling is Rhodes examination of violent behavior in different cultures throughout history. Rhodes concludes that in many historical situations and in many cultures, violent behavior was normal, and violentization was a means of preparing children to survive in a violent world. Rhodes explains that in recent history the state developed a monopoly on violence and compelled individuals to operate their daily lives in a non-violent manner through legal and cultural mechanisms. However, in many cases, this "civilizing" process has failed to take place-most notably in violent families (including Athens' and Rhodes' families), or in violent communities such as the South Bronx.
Equally as interesting is Athens' own story. Lonnie Athens grew up in an abusive household and in a violent neighborhood. His father routinely beat him and his brother but never touched his sisters. From an early age Athens developed a keen insight about violence including the fact that the behavior of abusive parents is often thoughtful and selective. Athens' father once told him that if Athens ever ran from a fight then he would beat him senseless, but if stood his ground, the father would back him up all the way. In this instance, Athens' father provided him with violent coaching. He trained his son through beatings, exposure to violence and direct training to survive in a violent world. Athens' credits his escape from the cycle of violence to the chance intervention of friends and community members and to his fortune at never having resorted to criminal violence in his youth.
Lonnie Athens' theories are some of the most powerful and compelling descriptions of human behavior I have ever encountered. In addition to providing a plausible and often provable explanation of violent behavior, they raise many questions about its prevention. For example, think of how two different religions, Christianity and Buddhism approach the subject. Christianity provides a moral framework which if properly adhered to or enforced supercedes the process of violentization (turn the other cheek, thou shall not kill). Buddhism compels people to question their perception of reality. If all attachments in life are illusory then presumably one's violent phantom community is also illusory and one can break the cycle of violence. The implications of Athens' work are both frightening and hopeful.

Useful, but flawed.
By Anita C.
I got this book after my mom kept pushing me to study for SATs (I'm currently a junior and I took the test in December). Even though it was a drag to churn out a test every week, I think it helped me on the actual test, as well as the PSAT.

I didn't really use the additional PSAT practice test, but my projected SAT score from the results was 2310, and it turned out to be pretty close. The most useful part for me was actually when they reviewed the few types of grammar rules. I went over this briefly and everything was on the actual test (I aced the grammar portion of it). There's not too much review because it IS a book of practice tests, so I assume this book is not for everyone or is to be used in conjunction with their Cracking the SAT series. I for one didn't really want to take a prep class so I chose this instead.

The typos mentioned by other people were pretty obvious, and sometimes very frustrating. I'm pretty sure that most people can figure out that the slope of a line is found by using delta y over delta x, not some weird mix of the two (Practice test 4, Section 3, #19.)

I'm not sure how other prep books are (I didn't really have much time and I've only taken the test once), but this one is good for checking timing, and the problems are about the right difficulty. Basically, use this book to prepare, but be ready to face typos and some vague questions. If you can deal with that, this should be a pretty good choice for you.

Great resource for anyone taking the SAT test
By Candice M. Westfall
My 13-year old daughter had to take the SAT test in order to apply for the Math and Science Center at our high school. Although she did not know how to answer some of the questions (just because she has not been taught the information yet) having this book allowed her to practice taking the tests and see how the questions are set up for each area of study. We were also able to have her take the tests given the time she would have been allowed during the actual test. We were very happy with our purchase.
