Save your money, buy Robert Bader's book instead

This book is like Richard Anobile's books but without the pictures. Not much effort/research went into the compilation of Groucho's writing and excerpts from films. Little, if anything, is new or hasn't been republished in the last 25 years. Much better is Robert Bader's compilation of Groucho's writing: Groucho Marx and Other Short Stories and Tall Tales

Pretty darn good

I bought this book because I didn't know anything about the Marx Brothers, and I wanted to get a feel for who they were offstage. (I just saw "Duck Soup" for the first time, and now I just HAVE to get all of their movies! Absolute Genius!)
I read the other review, and wondered, but this book did just fine in giving me a look at who these wonderful entertainers when they weren't performing (well, mainly Groucho). Plus it has some transcripts form the movies and his show "You bet your life" ! All in all, a really easy and fun read. Enjoy!

A good selection, which will make you want to watch the movies again.

This is a fine selection. There's a brief introduction by Groucho's biographer, Stefan Kanfer, a couple of Time magazine articles about Groucho, then the rest of the material is by the man himself. A kind of "greatest hits" volume. So you know it's guaranteed to be funny. It includes favorite scenes from "Animal Crackers", "Monkey Business", "Horse Feathers", "Duck Soup", "A Night at the Opera", and "A Day at the Races", among other films. There are some freelance articles, as well as selected material culled from his appearances on radio and TV.

All of this is reliably funny stuff, but for my money the best part of this book was "The Groucho Letters", roughly 30 pages of correspondence. There's the surreal correspondence between Groucho and Warner Brothers, who were trying to claim exclusive rights to the name 'Casablanca'. Letters to Fred Allen, Russell Baker, Alistair Cooke, and others. But the oddly moving center to the whole collection is an exchange of letters between Groucho and T.S. Eliot, initiated when Eliot, who was an avid fan, wrote in 1961, requesting an autographed photo.

Anyone troubled by the anti-Jewish sentiments in some of Eliot's writing should read these letters, which go a long way to softening the image of Eliot as a rabid anti-Semite. The two men obviously grew friendly, and held each other in high regard, as this excerpt from a letter from Groucho to Russell Baker shows:

(January 21, 1965)

I was saddened by the death of T.S. Eliot. My wife and I had dinner at his home a few months ago and I realized then that he was not long for this world. He was a nice man, the best epitaph any man can have ....

I recommend the book, though you may prefer to watch the films again.

Red Dog is a book by a writer in love. While passing through a town in the Australian outback, novelist Louis de Bernières discovered a statue of a dog. Intrigued, he made inquiries, and was swamped by locals with tales of a wildly charismatic creature named Tally Ho. De Bernières, author of Corelli's Mandolin, has fashioned a charming picaresque of Tally's misdeeds and misadventures, not least of which involve the animal's enormous appetite (complemented by an equally enormous flatulence). "Tally," he writes, "was the most notorious canine dustbin in the whole neighbourhood. With apparent relish he ate paper bags, sticks, dead rats, butterflies, apple peel, eggshells, used tissues and socks." De Bernières' enchantment with this "dustbin" is a reflection of a larger rapture: here is a writer who has fallen for Australia itself. He wittily captures the country's cadences, its landscape, its weakness for the (literal) underdog. --Claire Dederer

The best stories about animals are really stories about the people who form bonds with them, and therein lies the central fault of this extremely slender effort from the celebrated author of Corelli's Mandolin. Apparently, de BerniŠres was so taken with a statue of a sheepdog he found in an unnamed town in Australia that he had to uncover the sources that fed the local legend. He transformed them into this picaresque narrative, a series of tall tales, written in a self-consciously folksy style about the animal known variously as Red Dog, Tally Ho and Bluey. Because de BerniŠres anthropomorphizes him, Red Dog comes across as all too human, while the people who know and love him are mere stick figures; the author acknowledges he "invented" them and it shows. While the dog does possess an uncanny ability to make his wants and needs known (more probably, it's the uncanny predilection for humans to interpret the dog's various "communications"), these tall tales simply aren't tall enough. To be effective, the anecdotes that make up the book should be surprising, amazing or at the very least delightful, but Red Dog's adventures are mundane. The dog is clearly meant to evoke the pioneering Australian's conception of himself: independent, resourceful, footloose and stubborn. Red Dog is also prone to aggressive flatulence, presumably not an element of the Australian character. No doubt there was an Australian sheepdog that was well-loved by a circle that transcended a single family or even a town, but it's a stretch to turn that idea into a book, even one as slight as this one. Dog lovers might bite, but other readers should beware. The book is charmingly illustrated by Alan Baker, and includes a useful glossary of "Australianisms."

Northwest Australia is vast, inhospitable, and except for wallaroos, kookaburras, and quolls, mostly unoccupied. The people there are tough Aborigines, drifters, and loners; most work in iron and salt mines. They aren't the type you would expect to fall for a red cloud kelpie (an Australian breed of sheepdog) named Tally Ho and known to the locals as Red Dog. But fall they did. A legend of sorts arose about the dog's many escapades, the stories of which de Bernieres, who came across a bronze statue of Tally Ho in Australia in 1998, gathers, fictionalized, in this delightful collection. Like his compatriots, Red Dog was loyal though independent, stubborn, stoic, and hard-living. He had no owner, but a custom of caring for him evolved among his friends, who took him to the vet when he had ticks and after he was shot. De Bernieres has put many miles between the Greek islands of his Corelli's Mandolin (1995) and the Latin America of his other novels, and is rapidly establishing himself as a master storyteller. A major disappointment after a seven year wait

A few years ago, I was in London and asked a book seller on Piccadilly what had happened to de Bernieres ("Corelli" is featured prominently in Modern Classics there), and he said he'd heard there was a problem with writer's block. Well, even now that he's published a new book, writer's block seems to still be a problem. After waiting for seven years for something new from the writer of the gorgeous "Corelli's Mandolin" and the almost as gorgeous Latin American trilogy, four of my all-time favorite books, Louis de Berniere's "Red Dog" is a major disappointment. I suppose if you're interested in dog stories (I'm not), there might be some enljoyment in this oh so thin little book, but after the rich feasts he gave us in the '90s, "Red Dog" isn't even a snack, it's just tasteless little dog biscuit of a book.

Charming
By taking a rest
Louis De Bernieres has written some marvelous literature. "Red Dog", is a wonderful true story about a dog that befriended a good portion of Australia, and has been memorialized with a bronze statue as well as other books. Faithful readers of this author will likely be disappointed if they expect another sweeping novel. This short story does not appear to have been planned, as it unfolds with crisp episodes in the remarkable life of this canine. It is extremely unusual in that the book has been illustrated with what appear to be etchings. Illustration has sadly become the domain of primarily very expensive, limited edition, small press books.
This is not a child's book, perhaps for young readers in Junior High, but not for young children. This is a book about adults and how a remarkably charismatic canine changed their lives. This is not a fairly tale, it includes the realities of very trying circumstances and the people who pioneer the way in this extremely difficult environment. When it gets hot in the USA warnings suggest certain groups stay indoors. When it gets hot down under, warnings are issued for gas tanks that are prone to explode when exposed to the sun!
I think it is great that an author who has established himself as an accomplished literary writer would have the courage to step well away from what has worked for him repeatedly. I was reminded of some of John Steinbeck's work that centered around animals, both his own and fictional. If John Steinbeck can make the change I believe it is safe for other accomplished authors to explore unfamiliar genres, and they do not deserve to be punished for doing so. This is especially the case when the results are so worthwhile. I was going to give this 4 stars but I stepped it up to 5. The book was punished and I wanted to even out what is a brief but entering read.

misleading copyright; good unabridged dictionary, excellent software

I can confirm a previous reviewer's complaint - the print version of this Random House Webster's unabridged dictionary has a copyright of 2001. The dictionary is based on the larger and heavier 1987 Random House Unabridged Dictionary, Second Edition. This print version is listed with copyrights of 1987, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2001. The CD ROM's WordGenius 4.3 that comes with it has a copyright of 2006.

Although I too was disappointed at not being able to purchase a newly edited dictionary, I must add that I liked the CD ROM a great deal even thought it contains no images. This software allows for all kinds of interesting searches based on approximate spellings, definitions, Boolean operations, wildcard designations, and searches that can even involve both a word specification and a definition specification. For example, by typing in "cat & rat" in the definition field, you can find all words with both "cat" and "rat" in their definitions: "cat and mouse," "farmer in the dell," "ratter," and "whisker." By typing "*book*" in the headword field and "v" (verb) in the definition field, you can find all verbs that contain "book" within them: "book," "double-book," "overbook," "prebook," and "rebook." The possibilities here are nearly endless.

To summarize: if you don't already own a good unabridged dictionary, this is a good one (as current dictionaries go). The software is well done, powerful, and fun. The publisher (and Amazon) get very bad marks for misleading the public regarding the copyright dates.

Don't waste your money; there ARE NO NEW WORDS!

I am utterly disgusted by Random House, a name I had before now considered to be one of the finest English language dictionary publishers in the business. While I still trust their scholarship, their avarice and duplicity has me so disturbed I am boycotting their dictionaries completely.

Unfortunately, my library just purchased this tome, which is billed as a "revised edition" . It is not revised in any manner which I could perceive -- as there aren't ANY NEW WORDS!!! Terms such as "blog", a word that has had a significant impact in interpersonal communication within the last two years or so, SHOULD have been included in a dictionary published in July of this year. But it is nowhere to be found!

Instead, Random House simply repackaged the 1999 edition, exchanging a red hardback cover/dust jacket for a new one in half green/half black. W-o-w. What a waste of money for consumers who are duped into thinking this is a N-E-W edition!

Random House publishers are so distracted by the dollar signs in their oculars they clearly haven't given a second thought as to how they are misleading, nay, ROBBING THEIR BUYERS!

This Dictionary was published in 2002 NOT 2005

I bought this dictionary because of Random House's reputation AND because RH stated this 2005 edition is the most up-to-date reference work. This claim is one of several claims verified to be false. A RH staffer verified that this dictionary was published in 2002. The edition they sell now is the same exact book (republished/not re-edited in 2005). The next claim states that the front section of the book contains "NEW" words NOT listed in the main section nor introduced in previous edition. This claim is also false. "Agent", for example, is found in the "new words section" AND the main section. In addition, "agent" is not a new word at all. What's it doing in this new word section? A word such as "blog" (web log) should have been included in this new section. Since this dictionary is really from 2002, it is understandable - in hindsight - why it's not listed. This word was not used much, if at all, in 2002. It was easily recognized, however, in 2005. I would NOT have purchased this dictionary if I knew it was from 2002 NOT from 2005. I'm very disappointed at being defrauded.

Apparently satiated with the gentle, homespun charms of Forrest Gump, Winston Groom enters the decidedly more menacing realm of blackmail, revenge, and torture in Such a Pretty, Pretty Girl. Readers expecting guileless and unequivocal protagonists may find themselves shocked by Groom's purview; readers looking for stylish suspense, enigmatic players, and voice-over commentary like "No trap is as deadly as the one you set for yourself" may find themselves unable to put the book down.

The girl is Los Angeles TV news anchor Delia Jamison, a still ravishing fortysomething who has strenuously and repeatedly exercised her right to leave suitors bitterly heartbroken. Oblique, seductive, and often blunt to a fault, it seems that she has begun receiving lewd and vaguely threatening letters from--she postulates--a jilted ex. Enter another former beau, Oscar-winning screenwriter Johnny Lightfoot, who fortuitously bumps into her and is captivated all over again--not only by her beauty, but also by the mystery of her tormentor. When she presents Johnny with a list of suspects (i.e., past conquests), he resolves to unmask the letter writer.

Audacious almost to the breaking point, Such a Pretty, Pretty Girl is nonetheless good fun--literary candy rife with cat-and-mouse interrogations, neon clues, and campy misdirection. Groom (Forrest Gump) seems to have followed his best-known creation to Hollywood: if for Forrest "life is like a box of chocolates," for the protagonists here, life is like an old-fashioned detective thriller, replete with stock characters, stagey settings and convenient plot twists. "Drop-dead gorgeous" Delia Jamison is an L.A. television news anchor who has loved, and left, an astonishing array of men. When Delia starts to get threatening sexual letters and calls, she enlists the help of a sympathetic (and still-smitten) ex, Groom's narrator, screenwriter Johnny Lightfoot, who plunges into the investigation with amateurish enthusiasm and remarkable self-delusion. Delia is duplicitous and manipulative; she withholds key information from Johnny, from her husband Brad and from Brad's best friend, Rick, who owns "a big detective agency," yet welcomes Johnny's sleuthing (here, as elsewhere, Groom's desire to pay homage to 1940s Hollywood trumps probability and psychology). Groom invests Johnny's narration with Chandlerian cliches: "One thing was for sure, though?Delia was a woman of impenetrable contradictions." Seemingly everybody Johnny meets or knows reminds him of an actor in an old film (one fellow once "resembled a young Charlton Heston, but now he looked more like Sydney Greenstreet in Casablanca"), which comes off not as a tribute but as lazy characterization. Johnny eats good food, drinks fine wine, smokes premium cigars and plods gamely along until he stumbles across the solution to Delia's troubles, long after most readers will have figured it out. To paraphrase Forrest Gump's famous words, a novel is like a box of chocolates?you never know what you're going to get. Sadly, what you get with Groom's latest book is a pretty stale bonbon. When Johnny Lightfoot, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter, runs into old flame that Delia Jamison, now a successful Los Angeles TV anchorwoman, she tells him that she is being blackmailed by one of the many lovers she had dumped over the years. Still attracted to the seductive Delia despite his painful experience, Johnny offers to investigate. As he tracks down the men involved, Johnny learns more about Delia than he ever wanted to know (her promiscuity, the ruthless "honesty" that leaves a trail of broken hearts). Coming from the author of Forrest Gump (LJ 3/1/86), this novel is a big disappointment. The characters are flat and one-dimensional?Delia is a "piece of ass" driving men wild with her sexual expertise, the males are cardboard schmucks?and the book ends with a ridiculous climax. Not recommended.

As I love a good suspense novel, I bought this book based on the jacket synopsis and was deeply disappointed when I finished reading it. I found all of the characters completely unlikeable and underdeveloped, and towards the end I didn't care WHO was blackmailing Delia. I also found it completely unbelievable that every man Johnny spoke with during his investigation had no problem immediately opening up to him about Delia. It's implausible that each would share intimate details to a complete stranger who thinks they may be a blackmailer! I, too, found the movie character/actor references annoying. Finally, I was perturbed that the author chose not to reveal Delia's secret sexual "tricks" after going on and on about them throughout the book (couldn't think of anything spicy enough?) In all, I found this book to be boring and not quite the page-turner I was hoping for. If you want a real sexual, suspenseful, who-done-it, check out Romeo by Elise Title.

Too Many Factual Errors Plus An Annoying Ending

This book contains some simple factual errors that make one doubt the concentration of both author and editor. For example, on page 131 the arithmetic is all wrong. The original payment to the service was $180 per hour and Delia got $60 of that. The subsequent direct payments to Delia's post office box were $50 per hour, which is certainly not 3 times $60 as stated. Seems she actually gave herself a cut in pay, which might also be appropriate for the author/editor. The suspense of waiting until the end of the book for revelation of 'what Delia did' kept me interested through some rather repetitious and boring episodes. However - there was no revelation! The secret was never revealed to the poor sucker reading the book. I was annoyed by this at the time, and still am a day later. I can only be grateful that I got this book from the library and didn't spend any money on it.

I attended a lecture/book signing last week at the Jamaican Embassy in Washington DC. Beverly East gave us a "crash course" in graphology, borrowing from the material in her book. I had been somewhat skeptical of the science of graphology, but Ms. East made a true believer out of me. The one issue I always had with grapholoy was that people change in their charactaristics and traits, so I thought graphology could not be an accurate science. Ms. East addressed this concern, stating that one's handwriting can change as they change. Also, when someone is feeling stressed, or any other emotion(s) differing from their usual state, their handwriting reflects that change. When she evaluates a person's handwriting, she likes to have a recent sample about a day old, not something from six months ago. Ms. East is extremely knowlegable and won over skeptics who were in the audience (myself included). A critic has said that her book should be on the shelf with the thesaurus (allow me to second that). She stated that her book was not a male-bashing book. When I initially read the title, That was not my concern so much as the idea that this book would be like that ridiculous book "The Rules" and put us women back 30 years. Not so! (Thank God). Graphology is a 16th century science and gender has no effect on a person's handwriting and the traits they show through their script. I thought the information I had would be of some help to you. No, I do not work for her or the publishers of her book and do not even know her, I had to go to the lecture for a class assignment, but am very happy I went. Buy this book!

The Pen IS Mightier Than the Sword

He says all the right things, but does he look good on paper?? That's the question I asked myself after reading "Mr. Write." How could I (how could anyone) resist the temptation to find out using the well-written, clear and insightful analyses provided by Ms. East. Intelligent, witty and sometimes disturbing, Ms. East shows us how cryptology reveals a person's personality through the simple act of writing a note and how anyone can can apply those theories. In addition, she provides easy to understand examples. So, if you're wondering if he's as good as he seems, or too good to be true. Is he kind, open, generous and straightforward or critical, controlling and deceitful? Find out for yourself. By the way, I did. Fortunately, I learned enough to to confirm what I already knew, which was, that while the gentleman in question may not be Mr. Right, he's perfectly suited for Mr. Right Now!! So I'm keeping pen and paper handy while my search continues.

There are better books out there

This book just throws essays at you without any comment on the essays. Certainly there are strengths and weaknesses to each essay and wouldn't presenting those along with the essay be helpful? I think so.

Overall it's great

It's the latest edition for Medical School Essays That Made a Difference, has lots of basic information in the beginning of the book which is great for those who are just starting out their PreMed journey. I took off one star because for one applicant who got into a really good school they did not provide an MCAT score & in another page they had the wrong page to refer to for the schools they were accepted to.

During my application phase, I was read all of the contained essays which greatly enhanced the brainstorming and ideas for my essay. However my final essay turned out completely different from the ideas within the essays I read, I gained a lot of inspiration and creative ideas from this book.

The best AP Chem test prep book

I'm an AP Chemistry teacher who has taken the time to purchase and compare the various test prep books for this exam. I started out by looking at the Amazon ratings, and I only ordered test prep books that had an average rating of at least four stars. That left me with three books for AP Chem. The 5 steps book, the AP Chem for Dummies book, and the Princeton Review. I admit I bought the 2012 version of all three; they generally don't change much from year to year and I feel comfortable extrapolating the 2013 rating from the 2012 editions (which were much cheaper bought used on my teacher salary!)

Of the three, I find the Princeton Review book to be the best overall. They do a good job of mirroring actual AP Chemistry exam questions, and I detected no lapses in the content coverage. What's even better, though, is the authors of this book made a conscious effort to exclude things that you just don't need to know. The biggest problems with the 5 steps and the Dummies books was that there was just too much stuff. You're buying a review book to help you pass the exam, and learning anything beyond that is not useful in a test prep book, generally. The 5 steps book also had really bad practice questions, while the Dummies book wasn't particularly user friendly when it came to the formatting.

The only weakness the Princeton Review book had is that it really is, at its core, a supplemental text. There's not a great deal of time spent on actually teaching the material (more worked-out examples would have been nice). The bones are quite good, but I really feel like it's best used as a companion to a full-on AP Chemistry course. The provided tests are well written and mirror the AP exam content nicely, and in my opinion that's one of the best things you can get out of any test prep book. So, even though the book is not perfect, I'm giving it five stars because it is significantly better than the competition and that's what really matters here. Oh, and as an aside, even though I bought mine used I wouldn't necessarily recommend a student do so. The "used" part of my book meant it came with lots of circled answers and writing pretty much everywhere.

In any case, this is the book I will recommend to my students for the 2013 exam. One thing to be aware of, though, is that the AP Chemistry content is undergoing a pretty big shift effective 2014. So, if you're reading this review anytime past May 2013, it is outdated and I wouldn't necessarily assume that the new guide will be modified to match the new content. As I mentioned earlier in my review, a lot of times the authors of books like this will simply print essentially the same book year after year, and I've found that sometimes they can get frightfully out of date (Kaplan is a notable offender in this regard). That being said, the folks at the Princeton Review might be all over the new content, and it will certainly be the first test prep book I review come 2014 to see if they managed to keep their book current.

Best Review Book! Will Definitely Help Your Score

After looking at several different brands of review books for this past year when I took AP World History, I decided on this one. It was more concise than other review books (more big picture, some detail but not as much) and it was recommended by both my teacher and other students. I like it because it focused on the big ideas instead of tiny little details. This was so helpful because if you only know lots of small details, they may not even be on the test. If you understand the big picture that connects all those details, you'll do a lot better because it will help you on the essay section (which I was most scared about) and help you figure out detail-oriented multiple choice questions.

I bought the 2011 Edition of this book, and I'm sure the 2012 one is only better. The author has a sense of humor and explains in normal, everyday talk to simplify what the textbook says. The practice tests are very helpful because they're harder than the actual exam was, so if you can work through them you'll be really prepared for the exam.

I got a 5 on the AP world exam, and I know I would not have been able to do it without this book. I learned a lot in class, but this book helped pull it all together. I only wish I had bought it earlier because I think it would have been loads of help to prepare me for each unit test throughout the year (there are 5 units) as well as the actual exam.

THE COURSE/EXAM:

World History AP, or WHAP, is a college level world history class that tests a student's ability to connect the fundamentals of history under principals such as culture, economy, and political aspects. Students will be required to do conceptual and analytical thinking to link different civilizations with one another. The purpose of this course is not to memorize dates and history, but rather to understand how all civilizations can be linked with TRENDS. You will be required to understand these trends in both the multiple choice and free response portion of the exam, unlike APUSH(AP US History), which requires a great deal of information retention.

At the end of the year, you will take the WHAP exam to determine your knowledge in the class. The exam is composed of 70 multiple choice questions worth 50% of the grade and 3 essays worth 50% of the grade together. The multiple choice questions test aspects of cultures and your knowledge of remembering their differences and similarities, such as How did _______ differ from ________ economically? The free response part has 3 essays: a Document Based Question, a Change over Time Question, and a Compare/Contrast Question. With each essay, you can score from a 0-9, which is based on a rubric I will post below. Getting a 5 on the exam means earning about 70-100% of the maximum allotted points, while a 4 is around 50-70%.

PRINCETON REVIEW:

My world history textbook was an absolute PAIN to read. As a result, I decided to purchase this book to supplement the overall experience for the class. And it helped: significantly.

The book starts off with more info about the WHAP test, such as what to expect and how to answer questions. Its key strategy is Process of Elimination, and it will provide examples to help explain how best to use it. ONE THING THAT HAS CHANGED AS OF 2011 IS THAT THERE IS NO MORE GUESSING PENALTY FOR THE TEST, SO FEEL FREE TO GUESS WITHOUT PENALTY. The huge chunk in the middle is like a secondary textbook, more on this later. The last part of the book contains 2 AP full length tests, in which I suggest you use one for a diagnostic and the second to test your skills.

If a WORLD HISTORY book makes me actually enjoy reading it, its obviously going to stick in my head better. And that is the magic of this book. Don't expect huge lengthy paragraphs on certain chapters; rather, information you will actually need for the test. The book is sprinkled with some comical effects that make it much more easier to understand. Also, there are small information boxes that let you connect places to places, the main focus I mentioned above. I highly recommended knowing these boxes like the back of your hand; you WILL need them for the exam.

The tests are probably the closest to College Board AP style as you will see in a reference book. Rather than asking for straight facts like some books I know, Princeton's uses an analytical basis for its questions just like the AP. Furthermore, there is an answer key at the end with useful explanations about the answers as well. In fact, the Princeton Review's tests are very close, if not HARDER, than the real test, so they are very valuable. I suggest saving them till the 2 weeks before the exam, when you are reviewing this book.

There are no primary resources in the book and no example essays, but I will remedy the 2nd part at least with a link below. Though the book does give guidelines on how to write the essays, it would be nicer to see actual ones along with commentaries. The lack of primary resources isn't that significant, but still noteworthy, as there are often questions in the multiple choice over historical documents.

One question I've been asked several times is if it is a good textbook replacement. Honestly, for the class itself, it's not enough. As stated above, the book will work wonders if you supplement it with a few notes of your own, but this shouldn't be your ONLY resource if you want to make an A in the class. I used online outlines to complement this book, and as a result got the A. What does this book work best as? A refresher. I can promise that nearing the time for the AP, I forgot many important details from the first semester. Thankfully though, this book let me recall names I had forgotten, such as Mamluk and the Hellenistic Era. It's good(actually, amazing) for the AP, as the AP doesn't require that much detail, but your teacher will most likely incorporate details this book won't cover.

This book is truly not the best for super essays, but decent for good(5 or 6/9) essays. When I took the essays for the actual exam, I can just say that I felt a little screwed. A 8 or 9/9 essay requires a LOT more detail than the book provides. For example, one of the 2010 essays was to describe changes over time in African religion systems. The book briefly covered this, but it was only about 1/2 page of info. YOU WILL NEED MORE FOR A BETTER ESSAY(more significantly so as it is 50% of the grade), so please do not rely on this book single-handedly.

The book will do wonders for preparing you for the MC portion of the AP. Compared to other prep books, this will at least ensure you a 3 or 4; the others about a 2 or 3. However, that one point difference to a 4 or 5 will require some action on your part, and I shall help you out by providing a few links below. The reason I am giving this book a 5 is because it was the only review book I used, and it, along with a few external notes, ensured me a 5 on the exam. And if I can get a 5, you can too!

ADVICE AND EXTERNAL LINKS:

If taking this class at school-
*Make sure to follow along what your teacher says. If you don't have a good teacher, I highly suggest look at online presentations.
*Add additional notes to the book that you may find helpful. Now remember. SPECIFIC Dates(you MUST at least know the basic time period)/REALLY MINOR details are not at all necessary for this class, so don't waste time doing so.
*It's important to understand the CHANGES OVER TIME in a society(Such as China) and COMPARING AND CONTRASTING two different societies (such as the Mongols and the Byzantines). I highly recommend creating a visual table for each of the societies involved in a time period on the basis of their customs, foreign policy, etc. etc.
*Don't take the practice exams until the few weeks before the exam. They are extremely valuable. When the time comes, time yourself accordingly and make sure to look at the explanations for why you got something right or wrong. Do you see any patterns in the questions you missed? If so, you may want to review the section in either your textbook or PR book.
*Hate the textbook and don't want to use it?! I know! Me neither! I used online outlines of the textbook, and it, along with this book, made my life a lot easier!
*Look at some of the tips below.

If you are self-studying this course-
*Read the textbook part of the book at least 2 or 3 times. Make sure to read the commentaries, they are break-or-make what you will see on the AP questions.
*Take some textbook quizzes at the website mentioned below (they are pretty close to AP level). Review the questions you got wrong and understand why you got them wrong.
*Take one practice test, and see how you do. Analyze the ones you got wrong. See any patterns? Review that chapter again in the book. If you guessed on any question, put a mark on it, so that your patterns aren't flawed. Repeat for Practice Test II.
*As you don't have a teacher to guide you on how to write the essays, I suggest this course of action. First, print out the grading rubric for all 3 essays so that you know how points are given and what you need to put on the essay. ENGLISH GRAMMAR IS NOT IMPORTANT(please do write it in English though!) and neither is spelling; don't waste precious time on that. Take a look at some of the free response questions at the website below, and practice them. Do you see any prompt that might be tricky for you? If you see many of these, you need another information supplement. Find some outlines online and review them. If you only have trouble with a few, review what your PR says.
*Start early, not the week before the exam, to ensure a 4 or 5.

General Advice for Exam-
*Don't be scared to BS(for the lack of a better word..). Essay graders can't penalize inaccuracy, so if you have NO IDEA what your essay is talking about, make it along rather than leaving it blank. Of course, use common sense please. Drawing a superman logo doesn't count as an essay, and neither does THIS IS SPARTAAAA.
*FEEL FREE TO GUESS ON QUESTIONS YOU DON'T KNOW. THE GUESSING PENALTY HAS BEEN REMOVED STARTING THIS YEAR.
*Bring a watch with you on test day to maintain a solid amount of time for each essay- around 40 minutes for each one.

If you look to the right of them, you will see SAMPLES AND COMMENTARY, in which you can actually view EXAMPLE essays to those prompts along with the score they received, and why they received it. Also- for each year there is a SCORING GUIDELINE which you can use to grade your essays based on the 9 point system.
