Poor resource for quantitative practice
By GRD
Disappointing book, explanations contain errors and lack clarity. Answer choices are misordered (GMAT Numerical answers are always in ascending order). Answers often involve doing brutal math rather than having intuitive solutions. I.e. plugging in numbers and doing four or five calculations will waste precious time. However many of the solutions in this book involve plugging in multiple numbers and doing excessive math.

Does not do a good job of explaining probability and permutations.

Data sufficiency questions are weak. Either overly simple or excessively difficult. Usually it's very easy to rule out A or B because of the simplicity.

Do not buy this book. At best just get it from the library.

Stay away from this book. It is overtaken with ...
By Daniel
Stay away from this book. It is overtaken with errors, and some methods that it teaches you for taking on the GMAT are dangerous (i.e estimating an answer based on a drawing/geometric figure, which other study aids tell you to never do as they are mostly not to scale). Many errors ignore part of the question stems to get their answer (one question clearly stated that x was a non zero integer, then used 0 to disprove one some of the answers). Makes you wonder if the people who wrote this book took time to re-read the stem before they submitted...Kaplan, on the other hand, is much more helpful and even takes the time to explain why all answer choices are correct/incorrect, which Princeton does rarely.

War Torn: Stories of War from the Women Reporters Who Covered Vietnam, by Tad Bartimus, Tracy Wood, Kate Webb, Laura Palmer, Edith Lederer

For the first time, nine women who made journalism history talk candidly about their professional and deeply personal experiences as young reporters who lived, worked, and loved surrounded by war. Their stories span a decade of America’s involvement in Vietnam, from the earliest days of the conflict until the last U.S. helicopters left Saigon in 1975.

They were gutsy risk-takers who saw firsthand what most Americans knew only from their morning newspapers or the evening news. Many had very particular reasons for going to Vietnam—some had to fight and plead to go—but others ended up there by accident. What happened to them was remarkable and important by any standard. Their lives became exciting beyond anything they had ever imagined, and the experience never left them. It was dangerous—one was wounded, and one was captured by the North Vietnamese—but the challenges they faced were uniquely rewarding.

They lived at full tilt, making an impact on all the people around them, from the orphan children in the streets to their fellow journalists and photographers to the soldiers they met and lived with in the field. They experienced anguish and heartbreak—and an abundance
of friendship and love. These stories not only introduce a remarkable group of individuals but give an entirely new perspective on the most controversial conflict in our history. Vietnam changed their lives forever. Here they tell about it with all the candor, commitment, and energy that characterized their courageous reporting during the war.

Often only hours before you took that first sip of ricard or your martini... you had been watching a medic give up on a kid of eighteen or nineteen and flip a cold poncho over his face. Often you could hear the artillery of a battle across the Saigon River. So Kate Webb, a former UPI correspondent, recalls her days as a reporter in Vietnam, moving back and forth between the devastation of the field and the decadent and chaotic nightlife of Saigon. Her story is part of War Torn: Stories of War from the Women Reporters Who Covered Vietnam, written by former correspondents including Denby Fawcett, Jurate Kazickas and UPI's Webb and Tracy Wood. The book collects nine reporters' memoirs that recall the period of 1966 1975, when women's reportage, as Gloria Emerson notes in her introduction, was much rarer than today.

From Library Journal
Women correspondents in Vietnam were a rarity and frequently discouraged by the military as well as by paternalistic editors who resisted giving them combat assignments. But the nine women reporters whose harrowing war stories are recounted here e.g., Bartimus (Associated Press), Edie Lederer (Associated Press), Anne Merrick (ABC-TV), Laura Palmer (ABC and NBC Radio), and more were determined to go to Vietnam to cover the biggest story of their generation. In the course of their work, one was captured and imprisoned by the enemy and two others were seriously injured. For each woman Vietnam was a life-changing event, her "phantom limb," as Bartimus calls it. These powerful stories of sex, drugs, fear, adventure, horror, and pathos, as well as "the unabashed love" that these reporters observed the men on the battlefield expressing to one another, offer a new perspective on the war and warfare journalism that should be in demand in all public and academic libraries. Highly recommended. Faye Powell, Portland State Univ. Lib., OR

From Booklist
This fascinating book chronicles the experiences of nine women reporters who covered the Vietnam War from 1966 until 1975. There was no censorship of war coverage, and reporters even went on bombing missions, but there were concerns about allowing women journalists near the fighting because they were considered a distraction. This attitude led female reporters to fight for their right to cover the war, and they won, earning the privilege to face the same horrific, life-threatening situations as male reporters. Several of them, like the soldiers they covered, found some comfort in drugs, alcohol, and sex. They also recall friendships with soldiers and the Vietnamese and their growing cynicism as the controversial war continued. One reporter remembers how Vietnam gave her a family: she met her husband there, and she adopted two Vietnamese orphans. A wire service reporter recounts her brief imprisonment by North Vietnamese in Cambodia. All nine share vivid recollections of danger, loss, and anguish and relay how covering Vietnam changed their lives professionally and personally. Vanessa Bush

Fascinating stories of courage
By Linda Goldberg
WAR TORN is a brilliant and riveting collection of essays by the handful of smart and courageous women who actually went to the battlefields in Asia to report on the Vietnamese War. For everyone who served in the war or had loved ones who did, for those of us who lived through these events at home, and for younger readers who have no sense of this history, this compelling book reveals these critical years from a perspective most of us never knew existed. The stories of these nine brave women will capture your minds and break your heart a bit. A thorougly uplifting and informative book with stories you've never heard before.

War Torn
By P. R. Newman
A wonderful collection of the varied experiences of 9 female journalists who covered the Vietnam War and it's aftermath, as foreign correspondents. These amazing women were pioneers in their profession, working as journalists covering combat operations at a time when many in the news media still felt that was a job best left to male reporters.

I was struck by the common threads in all 9 contributors' personal accounts of their experiences in Vietnam, covering the War. All were profoundly affected by their time in Vietnam, not unlike soldiers who courageously served our country there so long ago. I was fascinated by their vivid descriptions of Saigon and the lives they led there, juxtaposed against the harsh and tragic reality of covering combat operations as they occurred.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the Vietnam War or the modern history of journalism.

Where was I?
By Amazon user
" Having been born in the early forties, Vietnam was MY war. Unlike the women of WAR TORN, I busied myself with raising a family in the good, old, safe & sound USA. I cannot say enough about the impact this book had on me. These selfless, courageous, determined correspondents took me on a tour of a Vietnam that I never knew existed. Reading WAR TORN was truly an educational, eye-opening experience for me. They way these women express their adventures, insights, and emotions is absolutely glorious. This is a must read for people of all ages."

Too Brief a Treat: The Letters of Truman Capote, by Truman Capote

Truman Capote was hailed as one the most meticulous writers in American letters–a part of the Capote mystique is that his precise writing seemed to exist apart from his chaotic life. While the measure of Capote as a writer is best taken through his work, Capote the person is best understood in his personal correspondence with friends, colleagues, lovers, and rivals.

In Too Brief a Treat, the acclaimed biographer Gerald Clarke brings together for the first time the private letters of Truman Capote. Encompassing more than four decades, these letters reveal the inner life of one of the twentieth century’s most intriguing personalities. As Clarke notes in his Introduction, Capote was an inveterate letter writer who both loved and craved love without inhibition. He wrote letters as he spoke: emphatically, spontaneously, and without reservation. He also wrote them at a breakneck pace, unconcerned with posterity. Thus, in this volume we have perhaps the closest thing possible to an elusive treasure: a Capote autobiography.

Through his letters to the likes of William Styron, Gloria Vanderbilt, his publishers and editors, his longtime companion and lover Jack Dunphy, and others, we see Capote in all his life’s phases–the uncannily self-possessed na•f who jumped headlong into the dynamic post—World War Two New York literary scene and the more mature, established Capote of the 1950s. Then there is the Capote of the early 1960s, immersed in the research and writing of his masterpiece, In Cold Blood. Capote’s correspondence with Kansas detective Alvin Dewey, and with Perry Smith, one of the killers profiled in that work, demonstrates Capote’s intense devotion to his craft, while his letters to friends like Cecil Beaton show Capote giddy with his emergence as a flamboyant mass media celebrity after that book’s publication. Finally, we see Capote later in his life, as things seemed to be unraveling: when he is disillusioned, isolated by his substance abuse and by personal rivalries. (Ever effusive with praise and affection, Capote could nevertheless carry a grudge like few others).
Too Brief a Treat is that uncommon book that gives us a literary titan’s unvarnished thoughts. It is both Gerald Clarke’s labor of love and a surpassing work of literary history.

Considering Truman Capote's fabled social life, one would think that his private letters would be dripping with juicy gossip. Indeed, with correspondents and friends that included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Lee Radziwill, Cecil Beaton, Christopher Isherwood, David O. Selznick, Tennessee Williams, Audrey Hepburn and Richard Avedon, these bright, energetic missives do include an occasional tasty tidbit. But as candid as Capote can be, one ultimately gets the sense that the author always knew his letters would be read by a wider audience some day, and rarely does Capote express less than bubbling enthusiasm and childlike devotion to his correspondents. It's up to Clarke, Capote's biographer, to fill in the occasionally sordid blanks, which he does in chapter intros and extensive footnotes. Much more profound than any gossip is the humor, sensitivity and ambition with which Capote seems to have approached every experience in his life. and his incredible discipline and passion for writing, spending hours sequestered in some of the world's most glamorous locations, composing the stories and books. This entertaining collection gives us a firsthand account of Capote's journey as he comes into his own as an artist, charting his gradual but inevitable transformation into a literary and society superstar. Readers who want to know more about the real Capote will pick up the author's books (which include In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany's) and continue to revel in his wise and whimsical prose. From Booklist
Was Truman Capote (who died in 1984) a major or a minor writer? The debate continues, but soaring above the fray comes this collection of his letters, which will be of keen interest to readers who simply appreciate his fiction (see our starred review of his Collected Stories on p.58) and his standard-setting "new nonfiction" book, In Cold Blood (1966), and choose to leave the debate of major or minor status to others. What matters here is that Capote was a man of language and passion, and the two appear in tandem in the correspondence he penned from adolescence onward. Capote's untrammeled personality fairly falls off the pages of these letters, and rather than being irritating, his disregard of reticence is especially poignant in this day of sterile e-mailing. Ideal for devotees to dip into here and there instead of reading from start to finish. Brad Hooper

Not the treat I was expecting
By Phillip O.
Truman Capote is one of my all time favorite writers so I was surprised that his letters are somewhat of a disappointment. The letters span 46 years with the majority of them from the late 40s and 50s. It's too bad that there are only a handful of correspondence from Capote's celebrated period following the release of "In Cold Blood," a book which turned him into a celebrity. I suppose he was too busy with his success and celebrity to write letters during this period. There is nothing about his famous Black and White Ball or the infamous article which scandalized the jet set. Hardly anything is here from the 70s either, a period in which he was practically a household name, appearing in movies and talk shows.

What is included are letters to his editors, Robert Linscott and Bennett Cerf, discussing his work and responding to criticism. Many letters to his lovers also are included but Capote seemed to have been very discreet (unlike in public life). Letters to David Selznick and Jennifer Jones give us a glimpse into the years of Hollywood life but very little juicy gossip - they leave the reader wanting more. During the years of Capote's research for "In Cold Blood," he corresponded frequently with Alvin Dewey, the detective in charge of the case, and his wife Marie. These letters are mainly questions from Capote concerning details of the case and Capote providing the Deweys with access to his Hollywood friends. Letters to the Dewey's son, Alvin Jr., show remarkable affection and advice and criticism to an aspiring writer.

Capote was a wanderer and his letters were written from his various residences across the globe - Sicily, Spain, Paris, Switzerland, Venice, California, New York, Alabama, etc. Jack Dunphy, his longtime companion is often mentioned with love and affection. Cecil Beaton and Christopher Isherwood were also frequent correspondents, but again, very little gossip.

The letters do show that Capote was obviously a very compassionate man and despite his biting wit and bitchy persona, they reveal a warm and caring man.

Don't Waste Your Money...
By anonymous
This year, I took AP lang in school and bought this book as review material. Many of its contents directly contradict my teacher's advice; for instance, they say you should not use outside examples in your synthesis essay while my teacher has assured us that you should have an example along with your sources in each paragraph to ensure a higher score. My teacher has been teaching AP lang for many years and 95% of his students pass each year, with more than 60% receiving 5s on the exam. I find him very reliable and therefore I believe this book contains much misinformation.

The worst part of this book is its review of the opinion essay. There are three different types of opinion essays (including Agree Disagree Qualify) which this book seems not to acknowledge. The sample essays in the book are also clearly given inflated grades - they suggest that an incomplete synthesis essay with no introduction should receive a 9.

The hit parades in Princeton Review books are usually helpful but in this one, the words are extremely common and simple. Some of them are "embellish, ornate, alleviate, and impression."

This book is written at such a low level that I really don't think it would be helpful in getting you a five. Maybe, if studied, it could help you achieve a 3 but honestly, if we reviewed the essays contained in my AP Lang class we would have given them fours or fives at best... not scores that will get you a four or five overall on the exam.

This is the Perfect book for a Perfect score!
By Fish Sticks
I went into AP English Lang & Comp thinking that I would receive a very poor score on the exam. This book proved that even the most challenged AP English student can receive a stellar score! The book is very detailed going over the 3 types of essays: rhetorical, argumentative, and synthesis. It offers a "Hit Parade" of about 200 words that you are most likely to encounter on the AP exam. I started prepping for the exam a few weeks before the exam skimming stuff. I studied the vocab from this book the 2 days before the AP exam and took a practice AP exam included in the book literally the night before the exam. On test day I wasn't too confident about the test and actually feared that I failed it. I hesitated but called in for my score and guess what?
I GOT A 5! I know for a fact that without this book I would have failed the AP test or would only have been able to score like a 3 at best. USE THIS BOOK. It has so many terms and concepts that ARE tested on the AP exam. Stuff you might not go over in your average AP Lang class. Get this book or the updated Princeton Review version for whatever year you are taking it. Woooooo Thank God and good luck on your AP exam! :)

Test taking strategies instead of a basic content review= GENIUS!
By PawPrint
I originally was unsure if it was worth buying a test prep book for a skill-based class. I was wrong. Instead of a content review, there is a section on how to approach the multiple choice section, a list of rhetorical strategies you should know, plus a "hit parade" which defines words that come up on the exam to build you vocabulary.

Thunder from the East: Portrait of a Rising Asia, by Nicholas D. Kristof, Sheryl WuDunn

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists and authors of China Wakes comes this insightful and comprehensive look at Asia on the rise.

The recent economic crisis in Asia heaped devastation upon millions. Yet Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn argue that it was the best thing that could have happened to Asia. It destroyed the cronyism, protectionism, and government regulation that had been crippling Asian business for decades, and it left in its wake a vast region of resilient and determined millions poised to wrest economic, diplomatic and military power from the West. Thunder from the East is a riveting look at a complex region, a fascinating panoply of compelling characters, and a prophetic analysis from arguably the West's most informed and intelligent writers on Asia.

Amazon.com Review
Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists for The New York Times and authors of China Wakes, return with an eclectic collection of reportage from Asia. Thunder from the East lacks an overarching thesis, except perhaps the claim that Asia is an incredibly important part of the world whose influence will only grow in the 21st century. (Toward the end of the book, in an amusing speculation about the year 2040, the authors wonder about "the Indian landing on Mars, the Kim's Riceburger acquisition of McDonald's, and now this basketball loss" of the Americans to the Chinese in the Olympics.) Kristof and WuDunn are a husband-and-wife team who split up their writing duties; every chapter is individually bylined, with the exception of the jointly authored final one. They refuse to offer a grand unified theory of Asia, a region, they write, that is "a bit like the weather: so diverse that it is difficult to generalize about." Instead, they paint chapter-length portraits of various Asian subjects, and often in the first person. In an opening set of remarks, Kristof describes how he and WuDunn have lived in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and Japan: "Our experience across Asia was in the form that the Chinese call qingting dian shui, meaning the way a dragonfly skits superficially about the surface of a pond."

There's nothing superficial about their reporting--it probes deep and isn't afraid to draw large lessons. Kristof, for example, discusses how China and India's historic insularity have kept those two countries from achieving all they might--cases of "imperial understretch," he calls them, in a nice phrase--and suggests the United States may be entering a similar period. Thunder from the East sparkles with this kind of analysis: provocative, debatable, and worth thinking over. Its riches aren't apparent from a cursory examination, but only through a page-by-page reading. Those who make the effort will be glad they took the time. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
HAbout a third of the way through this eye-opening book, a 13-year-old Cambodian girl describes her mixed feelings about her parents, who sold her into prostitution to raise money for her now-deceased mother. "Mom was sick and needed money. I don't hate her," the girl says. This simple description of the awful choices faced by many of the participants in Asia's economic revolution is just one of the many devastating portrayals in this deftly woven and gracefully written book by a Pulitzer Prize-winning husband-and-wife team (authors of China Wakes) who were longtime Asia correspondents for the New York Times. Using individual lives to examine countries ranging from Japan to Singapore, Kristof and WuDunn convincingly argue that Asia's current economic crisis is just a blip in the continent's more-than-half-century ascent toward economic power. The crisis is "an imposed breather, a forced opportunity to recuperate and regroup." And instead of viewing this growth with fear and hostility, as many authors have previously, Kristof and WuDunn approach it with curiosity. Part history, part anthropology and part journalism, the book describes the factorsDmainly isolationism and bloated bureaucracyDthat held Asia back and helped Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries and how these factors continue to prevent some countries, whether Malaysia or India, from reaching their full economic potential. Nor do they shy away from the difficult questions posed by globalization and expansion. They describe an Indonesian woman who speaks glowingly about the possibility of her son working some day in a local sweatshop: it would be a step up from her employmentD trawling through a local dump. Despite these obstacles, the authors believe that the entrepreneurial spirit of Asians like Sirivat Voravetvuthikun, who launched his own sandwich stand in Bangkok, provide evidence of their optimism: "[T]he center of the world may be shifting... and eventually it will settle in Asia." Whether the reader agrees with them or not, images of Sirivat and the others will remain with the reader long after this gem of a book is placed back on the shelf. 66 b&w photos. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
New York Times correspondents Kristof and WuDunn shared a Pulitzer for their in-depth coverage of China in 1990 and in 1994 wrote a dazzling book, China Wakes: The Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power. Unfortunately, their new book lacks many of the qualities that have made their work on China truly outstanding. One problem is how the authors depict the Asian economic crisis, which started in Thailand in 1997 and devastated all of Asia. Using the crisis as a center point, they present various human-interest stories about how people currently live (i.e., not very well) and posit that Asia will undergo much more strife before it becomes an economic giant. Although the authors say that they do not believe in cultural stereotyping, they promote a silly stereotype that all of Asia has "brutal drive and fantastic flexibility." The authors describe nationalism as an extreme negative in Asia, equating the term with fanatical bloodshed, and state that if the "best and brightest" were to go into business instead of government, Asia's problems of nepotism, corruption, and rigged elections would be mediated. In sum, the human-interest stories are interesting, but the analysis is weak. Moderately recommended for a general audience.DPeggy Spitzer Christoff, Oak Park, IL

An Excellent Survey of Asia
By J. Michael Gallipo
Mr. Kristoff and Ms. WuDunn have written a very interesting and engaging book about one of the most important areas of the world. The strength and weakness of the book derives from the authors' close contact with average people in the areas the write about. This puts a wonderfully human face on an area that for too many Americans becomes a faceless mass of statistics. But sometimes I think the authors are too quick to jump from anecdote to larger societal truth.
I found some of the early history of the region especially fascinating having never been exposed to that before. Like the authors, I spent time afterward thinking about what might have been had China not destroyed its 15th century navy. It is a useful counterpoint to the common argument that the triumph of the West over the past several centuries was inevitable.
The book also provides many good insights into Asia's potential for the future. I was also impressed that the authors seemed very cognizant of the limits of their predictive powers and often pointed the wide variety of things that could happen to change their overall outlook. I would recommend this book for all but the most serious scholars of Asia.

The sequel is never as good as the original
By A Customer
While I didn't find this book as edifying as "China Wakes," it's still a good read. Its greatest strength is the vignette format, with anecdotes, history, and statistics from various countries in the region and chapters divided by topic. The authors admit, rightfully, that with the breadth of territory they cover in this book the treatment is bound to be superficial to some degree, but it makes for a much more engaging read for someone interested in Asian studies in a broad sense, rather than the usual academic "fine-toothed-comb" treatment of a narrow topic. Their writing style is nonacademic, which is both highly engaging and very refreshing, and helps this book to appeal to a wide audience, not just ivory-tower types.
There are a few problems with the book, which can take something away from its enjoyability. First, there is a tremendous amount of editorializing. The authors may have felt this was necessary to tie together the disjunctive stories and histories they discuss, but I have a firm belief that the intelligence of the reader and the topic-as-chapter format would have made a much better tie than so much author opinion. That excessive editorializing and the overuse of "the upshot is" to explain things to the reader detracts from the maturity of the writing style. Additionally, the writers obviously consider themselves much more well-versed in Asia-related topics than most Americans. This is fine, but at certain points in the book the reader can't help but think that the authors mistake Americans for idiots. They assert, for example, that most people think of pastoral rice-paddy scenes, and not urban overcrowding, when they think of Asia. Who thinks that? I don't know anyone who doesn't tie overpopulation with India and China! Another example is when the authors assert (more than once) that people perceive Indonesia as stable. Who are these people? Most people I know, in wake of the East Timor situation (not the Bali bombing, since this book was published in '01) and religious/ethnic rioting in that country think of Indonesia as anything BUT stable. These weaknesses combine to give the reader a sense of being pandered to at times--a certain attitude of condescension, if you will.
Overall, this is a good book. It's great for people not well-versed in Asian studies, because it's broad enough to give people an easy-to-read introduction to the region (with both strengths and weaknesses presented). It's also good, however, for people who ARE heavily involved in Asian studies readings, since most of us in academia don't get many chances like this to venture out of our chosen country/culture of study and view the region as a larger whole.

Excellent warts-and-all view of a changing Asia
By Paul Mckenney
The authors write of their experiences and observations in a number of Asian countries. Their story is greatly helped by conversations with people from all walks of life, from world leaders to the desperately poor. Their story is very well told, and is consistent with my experiences in Asia.
Anyone who aspiring to "think globally and act locally" needs to read this book. Opponents of globalization are especially advised to read this book -- the world looks a lot different on the ground in parts of Asia than it does from the comfort of a North American or Western European armchair. High-minded ideals can cause a lot of real damage to the poorest of the poor, to those in most need of help.

Very Reader Friendly

I was a little apprehensive about buying the Princeton Review version since PR often gives more tricks then information, however this book summarized key information very well. Basically they condensed 4-5 day units into a few pages. The key terms are bolded and there's practice problems for each chapter. APES exam here I come! :D

I recently took (and passed with flying colors!) the DSST for Environment and Humanity with only 4 days preparation. The best part is this book was the only thing I read in preparation for it. If you need a succinct and easy-to-read study guide for the AP Environmental Science test or the DSST course in Environment and Humanity this book easily meets the challenge!

Cold Heart: A Novel, by Lynda La Plante

Having established her reputation with the enormously successful, two-time Emmy Award-winning television series Prime Suspect, author/screenwriter Lynda La Plante enhanced it with her more recent popular CBS TV miniseries, Bella Mafia. The same unbeatable storytelling power she brings to her films is the engine that drives her new thriller, Cold Heart, from its disturbing beginning to its shocking climax.

A single gunshot into a Beverly Hills swimming pool ends the life of movie mogul Harry Nathan, a man with so many enemies--including a widow and two ex-wives--that the challenge for PI Lorraine Page at first seems to be the surfeit of suspects. Newly established as an independent private investigator, Lorraine comes to the case hungry and determined to succeed--but Harry Nathan's death is the beginning, not the end, of a trail of lust and conspiracy leading to the darkest corners of the international art world. A sordid trail of video evidence implicates other leading Hollywood figures in the case, while Lorraine finds her own investigations hampered by the personal intervention of new police chief Jake Burton, a man who appears to know everything bad about her but still seems determined to know more.

As the failures of her past come back to haunt her, Lorraine finds that solving this murder is no longer just a job, it's about recapturing her own self-worth. A first-rate crime story, a love story, and more--it's precisely the kind of superior suspense novel we've come to expect from Lynda La Plante, one of the preeminent originators of realistic crime drama.

Amazon.com Review
Lorraine Page, heroine of Cold Shoulder and Cold Blood, returns with a new face, new wardrobe, new office, new assistant, new dog, and new love--all but the last, L.A. police lieutenant Jake Burton, courtesy of a big bonus earned on her previous case. Lynda La Plante, creator of the PBS series Prime Suspect, puts Lorraine right in the middle of a murderous art swindle scheme. When Harry Nathan, a charismatic producer, director, and collector, is murdered in his Brentwood swimming pool, Lorraine's hired to find out who killed him and then to track the missing art or the millions it's been turned into. Which of Harry's wives had the most to gain from his death? Why is faded ex-movie star Raymond Vallance, Harry's closest friend, still hanging around? Is it something to do with the porno tapes Harry's been blackmailing him over, or was he involved in the swindle, too? It would take a miniseries to unravel all the mcguffins and red herrings La Plante puts in Lorraine's--and the reader's--way. There's the accidental death of her new assistant, Decker--but Lorraine's too busy with her new lover to connect it to the Harry Nathan case. And the attacks on her own life--is there someone from her past seeking vengeance for something she did when she was a cop? Fans of her two previous Lorraine Page suspense novels won't want to miss this one. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Featuring the sleazy Hollywood denizens that La Plante depicts so well, this follow-up to Cold Blood and Cold Shoulder, though enjoyable reading, suffers from a flurry of plot coincidences and an unsatisfying ending. Ex-cop Lorraine Page (last seen in Cold Blood, 1997) is fresh out of surgery and rehab when she gets the first call at her new detective agency. Tinseltown sex kitten Cindy Nathan has found the body of her porn filmmaker husband, Harry, in his Beverly Hills pool and asks Page to prove she didn't do it. All evidence points to Cindy, but Lorraine weeds through the good, the bad and the really nasty in the deceased's circle of ex-spouses and scammed partners, and digs up a private video collection that makes everyone a suspect in wanting him dead. A visit to the police station ignites romance between Page and the new captain, Jake Burton, but few leads on the case. Then an art scam surfaces and Page is hired to track Harry's missing art collection, the bulk of his estate. She visits Harry's surviving first wife, a reclusive feminist artist living on Long Island, and uncovers hot leads, more death and lethal danger that follows her back to the West coast. La Plante's plotting is ragged with loose ends and the novel's conclusion is as familiar as scrambled eggs. But her leads are two raw nerves in search of a synapse and La Plante makes romantic sparks fly between them like few writers can. Agent, Esther Newberg. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Author of Prime Suspect, the hit PBS "Mystery" series and novelization, La Plante follows up Cold Blood (LJ 7/97) and its prequel Cold Shoulder (Random, 1996) with this flawed and undistinguished finale. After earning good money in Cold Blood, L.A. private investigator Lorraine Page tries to evade a troubled past and start life and work anew?with new clothes, a new apartment, a face lift, and a new case: the murder of moviemaker Harry Nathan. When Page gets romantically involved with Jake Burton, she dreams of forgetting her career and raising kids. But despite Page's treacly dreams, the past overtakes her. Nathan's two ex-wives are interestingly developed, which is not true of most of the other characters, especially Page. Although Page is credible as a detective, her private life plays like a soap opera. Despite some good plotting, the story suffers from loose ends and ambiguities. Not recommended.

La Plante, how could you?
By A Customer
Linda LaPlante had a good thing going and blew it. Lorraine Page was a real and fascinating character, leaving the reader happily, although impatiently, waiting for the next book. In Cold Heart, the third in the Page series, as soon as Lorraine meets Jake Burton you know things are moving too fast and the plot begins to really ring false. Linda LaPlante clearly wanted to move the story along as quickly as possible and bring the series to an end. And what an end! Trite, awkwardly written, almost painfully unbelievable and a slap in the face to her dedicated fans.
If you care about Lorraine Page, DO NOT READ Cold Heart...she deserves a better ending. A thoroughly disappointing book.

Page Investigations of to a rocky start.
By Glenn McLeod
Cold Heart by Lynda La Plante Random House 1998
Lorraine Page, recovering alcoholic, divorced mother of two teenage girls and beautiful has just received a million dollars bonus from her last case. Rosie and Rooney, her two best friends, are on their honeymoon in Europe and Lorraine is busy setting up her new apartment and office called "Page Investigations". A telephone call, ostensibly from Cindy Nathan, takes her to the house of Harry Nathan, a very wealthy film producer and owner of Maximedia, who has just been murdered. Cindy, Harry's wife, is a suspect and Page Investigations is hired by Cindy to find the murderer of Harry.
Harry's two former wives (Kendall and Sonja) and a long time friend, Raymond Vallance are also part of the coterie that are suspected of Harry's murder. As Lorraine digs into Harry's past she uncovers an art fraud scheme that has netted about 20 million dollars but no one seems to know when the money or paintings are. When Cindy is found dead, an apparent suicide, Lorraine suspects Kendall but Raymond Vallance also comes under scrutiny. Harry's penchant for videotaping his sex games with wives and friends could also be a motive for murder and the case becomes even more complicated when the brother of the boy Lorraine shot while she was with the police, enters and arranges a fatal accident for Lorraine's new secretary. Also on the scene is a new chief of detectives, Jake Burton,. who Lorraine falls for like a ton of bricks and severely complicates her life.
Lorraine wades through the clues and finally solves the puzzle. but before she can do anything about it she is severely beaten by the brother of her shooting victim.
Lynda La Plante as always tells a good story, full of excitement. Lorraine Page has been the protagonist in other La Plant mysteries and is a very sympathetic character. In the others she struggles with her alcoholism; in this one she is finally getting it together. The story tends to drag a little and is not quite up to the level her other books. Never-the-less a good read.

MY HEART IS NOW "COLD"!!
By TheReader23
I've so enjoyed the first two books in this series, Cold Shoulder and Cold Blood, that it was actually exciting for me to begin this one in the hopes that Lorraine Page is still on the right track towards putting her life back together. When Cold Blood ended, Lorraine and her partners had just received a million dollar bonus for solving their last case. This installment begins with Lorraine spending some of that money getting new office digs, a new car, some new clothes and waiting for the phone to ring in her private investigation agency. Her assistant Rosie has been replaced by Decker since Rosie and Rooney are still honeymooning in Europe. Fans of this series were delighted when Rosie found love in Cold Blood - how ironic.
The phone finally rings at Page Investigations beginning this new adventure into the world of movie producing, pornography, art theft and a possible love interest for Lorraine. The appearance of Jake Burton, as the new chief of detectives, will add some spice to the series not only in the police department but in Lorraine's apartment as well. As she tries to find out who really killed Harry Nathan, all the supporting characters in Harry's world begin to die as well. As his estate travels from one ex-wife to the other, Lorraine will also travel to the Hamptons and New Mexico in an effort to tie all the loose ends together.
While Lorraine is out of town, many things will be going on behind the scenes back home in LA. Rooney and Rosie have returned from their honeymoon and come up with some startling evidence that might bring Lorraine's past demons back to the forefront endangering her life.
Cold Heart is definitely a perfect title for this book as my heart was cold as I read and cried through the last few pages. I have only one thing to say to the author - How Could You?

Great book if you are motivated
By Claude Lambert
If you do not want to succeed or to study, the book will do nothing for you. So if you are a parent with a lazy kid, the book is no help. It is not one of these inspirational pieces that helps you out of laziness (for that, you should buy The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey). If you are an ambitious and organized teen, this is the Treasure Island of Tests.
Once you are motivated, the book offers plenty of advice on how to take notes, how to review your answers to a question, where to find free exercises, how to read efficiently. There are so many good tips that you should read and apply one at a time, then leave the book for two days and take another tip and apply it. Changing bad habits is difficult, it is why I see the book in the hands of teachers and parents rather than kids.

The people who wrote this know everything about tests: they give you specific advice for specific tests, tell you how to behave at the test center, anything you want to know is there.
The best use of the book is probably for young parents who had not a chance to go to college themselves: anything in the book that you can pass on to your young kids is worth it: it is all about forming good habits. As an example, there is a page on answering the right question. Sometimes teens get lost in sub-calculations and give the answer to that, they forget what the main question was or what is the unit needed in the answer. Read the question again before you write down the answer (the question was about Jack, not John, or it was in years, not in months...). It has to become a habit to be efficient. I imagine a parent or a teacher asking: "Did you read the question again before answering this?"and forming the mind of the student. It is more difficult to imagine a teen reading this, page 116, and deciding that it is what she will do from now on; but of course it is possible.
Powerful stuff for the serious inclined.
