Good starter book but all of the essays are from 2002

Note: The book contains outdated essays that have been carried over from the 2nd edition that was published back in 2003. The only new section is the student profiles with some essays (these are from 2007 and 2008).

The book can be summarized as follows:
Part 1: General essays & writing information
Part 2: Student essays with critique (this is organized by school)
Part 3: Student profiles of admitted students and 1-2 essays with each

The book contains 61 essays from real (admitted) business school students (from 15 schools) along with comments and critique from the author and admissions professionals. In addition, the first third of the book has great general admissions/essays overview. It covers a general strategy "How to crafit your essays", Common essay questions (what they are really asking), English grammar check list, interviews with students and also admissions directors from a number of the top 20 schools. Gives you an idea/perspective into what they are looking for in the essays and how decisions are made.

The book is definitely not an admissions guide (there is a lot more than essays) but I felit it was a fantastic starter book - very consice and to the point (every section could probably be elaborated). At times I did feel that it could have provided pages and pages of additional coverage but it is fairly brief - it is a book to get you motivated and started on your MBA journey. It delivered more than I expected for $11.

I have scanned the Table of Contents for you to see what's inside the book, so I won't be typing it out (just click cusomer images next to the book to see the table of contents and back cover).

The very last portion of the book contains student profiles and essays (something that's very hard to come by) - 18 profiles with their most critical essays (usually just one per profile) but supposedly the applicants felt these were most deciding ones. There is no critique with these essays, however.

P.S. A number of people (definitely not the majority) end up using admissions consultants to help them get into the business schools. However, this is not a guarantee to get in. Regardless of your path, you should be writing your own essays and not count for someone to get you in for $2K.

Great book

This book helped me get into a top 10 business school, despite my GMAT and undergraduate GPA being below the 80% median in both categories. This book gives some good, real examples, which you can't "steal," but still gives you ideas of how to pull your essays together. A wonderful tool that I think any top 10 MBA applicant should read.

Excellent book

This was an excellent review for the AP Exam. The only things I found that could have used some more explanation after taking the AP Exam are pesticides and their effects and some more forms of energy usage such as ethanol, and maybe an explanation of how crop rotation could be used with certain crops and what order to plant them. But these are minor things, and AP Exams are always trying to test things you may have not covered, but thankfully taking an actual class can fill in those gaps, although many things you may cover are extra, but nevertheless are valid things you can write down on the short repsonse. The questions on the AP Exam for the most part were things that this book covered. I got a 5 on the exam, from just reading this book and doing the chapter review questions at the end of the book. I even had about 10-20 minutes left over after completing the multiple choice part of the AP Exam. I didn't even get to do the 2 practice exams at the end of the practice book due to time contraints, but if you were to do them, you would definitely get a 5 most likely. My teacher was amazed with my score, especially since it was her first time teaching the AP Course (but she has taught several environmental science and earth science courses at a college when she was a professor) and she knew how difficult it would be to get a 5. Just read the book the whole book about a week before the exam, and do all the questions, then the night before, just read the whole thing and redo questions too if you have time for them. This book is a blessing. I can't say it enough.

Best APES book available

This book may be thin, but it covers just about everything on the APES exam. I got a 5, and it shouldn't be hard if you use the excellent (but unfortunately few) practice tests. I recommend this over Barron's because Barron's had much more information not necessary for the AP exam, and as a result, less realistic practice tests. If you want to know everything you need to know and spend less time on unnecessary details, get this book.

Good Book

Prepared me well for the AP. I used this book as my sole study resource and received a 5, given that I had taken a lower level course 2 years prior and had a moderate ability to infer the liberal agenda. This is an easy AP to study for given that the material is 10-25% science, 75-90% liberal agenda. Just know that the AP test includes a moderate amount of relatively simple mental calculations and unit conversions, which I don't recall seeing in this book.

Though he dutifully presents the long odds facing the would-be founders of the next Yahoo!, Bronson thrills to the culture of the Valley because he believes it fuses the often contradictory desires for security and adventure. A Reprint of His Best Wired Articles

I love Po Bronson's writing -- really I do. Every time I see an article in Wired with his byline, I devour it. His descriptions, particularly those of the people involved, crystallize a wide range of details into focused and evocative prose. His characters are exceptionally memorable.
Which is the problem.
Most of the essays in Nudist appeared in similar form as articles in Wired. I know this because the details in those articles stuck with me. I remember the lady with emphysema and her gift for closing software sales. I remember George Gilder's knee swelling because of his caffeine-fueled excess on a hotel treadmill. I remember Danny Hillis. And on it goes.
For someone who has not read all of the Wired articles, this book is great fun. Bronson's skill with details places the reader right smack in the middle of the chaos that is Silicon Valley. You can practically smell the hot asphalt.
But if you are a regular Bronson reader, save your money. I wish I'd known ... but who can deny a guy a way to make a quick buck on work that's already done?

The Nudist on the Late Shift and Other True Tales of Silicon

What an excellent book. A fast read. It was fun to read and get an inside glimpse of the new business environment taking shape in the "valley of the e-Titians!" Po Bronson' style of writing invites the reader to stay and enjoy. His choice of words, stories and metaphors is very enlighten and imaginative. Anyone wanting to get a feel for how the world of venture capitalist, start-ups, the Internet and the truly unique characters that exist in the technology valley of California must read this book. If you have a start up in your mind, read this book first. It will help you get a sense of the required commitment and creativity to be successful in the web technology world of today.
One of the greatest surprises was how the book was broken out, by the different types of business people in the "dot.com" world - i.e. the start-up, the IPO, the drop out, etc. It is a great book to use as a learning tool. It should be required reading in College business classes on setting up an Internet business.

Weak

Bronson doesn't seem to have much of a desire to penetrate the multiple layers of hype and expose what's underneath. Instead, he seems quite content to lap up whatever his favored VC buddies dish out to him, and is just grateful for the opportunity to be part of the scene. His writing has that annoying Wired hipsterish feel to it. It's a good thing he got this book out when he did, because the new Michael Lewis book totally blows it away. If you thought Po had any depth at all, reading Lewis's book will cure you of that misconception.

Questions for Howard Bryant on The Last Hero

Q: Why Henry Aaron?
A: After my second book, Juicing the Game, the natural progression for my thought process was heading toward one question: "Who in baseball do you admire? Is there anyone this sport can be proud of?" It wasn't simply the fatigue of writing about steroids and tainted heroes that drifted me toward Henry Aaron, but because the steroids scandal occurring during the same time as the housing-and-mortgage scandal told me something larger was taking place in this country, that the value systems we ostensibly seek--honor, integrity, accountability--were becoming almost quaint. In baseball, as the drug scandal intensified, players would tell me, "If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying." It was that level of cynicism that made me consider writing about someone who certainly was not perfect but had a larger mission for himself beyond money, that here was a person for whom those values are not quaint.

Q: Did he cooperate?
A: It took roughly eighteen months for him to agree to speak with me. I first began working on this project in May 2006 and that was in the middle of when Barry Bonds was nearing Henry’s record. Henry Aaron wanted nothing to do with the Bonds record chase. He didn't want to be asked questions about Bonds, did not want to be placed in the debate about anabolic steroids. He did not want to engage at all.

When Henry's attorney, Allan Tanenbaum, and I spoke for the first time, he was extremely pessimistic about the book and the public's reaction to Henry Aaron. He was convinced that the public did not care about him except in being positioned as the polar opposite of Bonds. He was certain that I was only interested in one thing: Bonds. Over many phone calls spanning several months (the key conversation taking place over Thanksgiving 2007), Allan finally accepted that my motives for writing the book had nothing to do with Bonds and everything to do with a man I considered to be an American icon.

A few months later, on January 31 (ironically on Jackie Robinson’s birthday), Henry Aaron and I had our first phone call. He was extremely pleasant and engaging but echoed Allan's sentiments about his own life. "People don’t care about me," he told me. "They only care about what I did as a baseball player. There’s more to me than that." I was amazed at the considerable divide that existed between the enthusiasm I received whenever I mentioned the possibility of writing about Henry and what he considered to be the public's perception of him.

Q: What most surprised you during the writing/research?
A: There were many surprising aspects of the research, which is why I truly love to research and write books. Whatever your initial thoughts of your subject are, they will invariably be altered the deeper you learn.

I was as guilty as anyone in following the accepted Aaron myth: played in Milwaukee, was always overshadowed by players in bigger markets, snuck up on even the shrewdest evaluators of talent from the day he entered the big leagues to the day when suddenly he and not Willie Mays was in the best position to break Babe Ruth's all-time home run record.

None of this is true, and that was the most surprising thing. Henry Aaron was a phenom, a top prospect from the day he joined the Indianapolis Clowns. He was a comet tearing through each level in the minor leagues, and when he arrived for his first spring in Bradenton, Florida in 1954, all eyes were on him to be the next great player.

The myth came later. As the Milwaukee Braves fell in the standings at the beginning of the 1960s, people did begin to forget about Henry, and he quietly accumulated Hall of Fame numbers. But that was only because the public lost interest in a losing team, not because it was unaware of his enormous ability.

Q: What is the lasting legacy of Henry Aaron?
A: A famous sociologist told me during an interview that the steroid scandal has created a gap between the record holders and the standard bearers of major league baseball. Barry Bonds is a record holder. Henry Aaron is a standard bearer. The latter is far more important and valuable than the former.

And it carries weight beyond the baseball diamond, where Henry always wanted respect. He spent his life being compared on the baseball diamond to Willie Mays, but Henry Aaron wanted to follow in the legacy of Jackie Robinson, to use his platform to provide opportunities for people who did not have them. Baseball was simply a means to that end.

This biography of the African-American baseball great doesn't amount to the epic it wants to be. ESPN reporter Bryant (Juicing the Game) portrays Aaron's journey from Jim Crow Alabama to superstardom with the Milwaukee, then Atlanta Braves during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s as both a sports saga and a struggle against racism. (The Braves' spring training facilities stayed segregated into the 1960s, and Aaron's 1974 breaking of Babe Ruth's home run record was marred by racist death threats.) But while the author takes very seriously the sports commentator's traditional task of investing trivia with near-biblical portentousness—And thus it came to pass that Henry Aaron became the first black majority owner of the first BMW franchise in the country—he never quite succeeds at establishing Aaron's heroic stature. The slugger comes off as a superlatively skillful but unspectacular player whose civil rights activism is cautious and muted (though more outspoken later when he became a Braves executive). Throughout, he's a wary, reticent man given to rancor over slights, and the narrative can't help wandering toward more charismatic figures like Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson. A different kind of baseball book

Don't get me wrong: All the bits and pieces we all love about baseball are here--the great games, the odd sets of personalities, the drama of a penant race (or two or three) and, yes. the march toward Ruth's record. But Byrant is a voracious reporter. He digs as deeply into the microfiche of Mobile newspapers from the '40s to track the beginnings of a legendary career. And, in doing so, he paints a portrait of the a time and place as fully dimensional as any proper historic treatment. And, in that sense, this isn't just a great baseball book. It's a great book about America--delivered with a sense of authority, a natural story-teller's comfortable grace and elegance, and a healthy sense of humor.

A Misunderstood Legend

In a rather bizarre article in "Sport Magazine", written over 40 years ago, lamenting the lack of "superstars" in major league baseball, the following assessment of Henry Aaron was given: "He's a star; but he's not a superstar."

Today, we realize that was an inaccurate assessment of one of the greatest players the game has ever known; however, for most of his career, Henry Aaron was widely regarded as merely "a very good player"; certainly no Mays or Mantle. While Mays and Mantle got the national attention, Hank Aaron quietly went about his business, year in and year out; and business was good. For fifteen out of twenty-three seasons in the big leagues, Aaron pounded out 30 or more home runs; eleven times he had over 100 runs batted in, while accumulating a lifetime batting average of .305.

At long last, Howard Bryant has compiled this wonderfully comprehensive biography of this introverted superstar; in the process, the reader will come away with a better understanding of the man's accomplishments on and off the field. Henry Aaron certainly deserves the recognition; better late than never.

Good Story, Tough Subject, Terrible Editing

I both enjoyed and learned quite a bit from this book, which provides plenty of historical and biographical context that I did not know, despite being a dedicated amateur baseball historian. If the book does not deeply illuminate Henry Aaron, the man, that seems to reflect less the author's failure but more the simple fact that Aaron was and is fairly guarded, sometimes contradictory, and not (based on what I've read) especially articulate. It's still very much worth reading. I particularly liked the organization of the book into thematic (not purely chronological) chapters.

However, Mr. Bryant's gifts, as represented here, seem to lie more in developing themes than in the nuts-and-bolts of writing proper sentences, and the lack of editing and proofreading eventually becomes a serious distraction. The book contains dozens (if not hundreds) of punctuation errors, grammatical mistakes, ill-formed sentences, confusing and contradictory play-by-play accounts, misused words, etc.

The most frequent example is the consistent failure to use an apostrophe for the possessive form of the word "Braves":
-- "The Braves lead was now six."
-- "In the Braves first test under Haney...."
-- "For more than two seasons, he had been the Braves best pitcher...."
-- "... Perini beamed his gap-toothed smile as the Braves fifteen-by-thirty-seven-foot pennant was raised before the game."
-- "... maybe the Braves routine coldcocking of the Reds was the real reason...."

... and on, and on, and on.

Factual errors include:
-- "In 1952, the Boston Braves had officially become the Milwaukee Braves in between innings of a spring-training game...."
No, that was in 1953, as was clearly described earlier in the book.

Then there are bush-league sentences such as this:
-- "Standing on third, with one out, Bruton lofted a fly to center."
A 6th-grader could tell you what's wrong with that one.

Here's an example of garbled play-by-play, describing the 1956 season opener in which the Braves faced pitcher Bob Rush of the Cubs:
-- "Aaron drove in the game's first run in the fourth and then broke Rush in the sixth. Rush had appeared to be breezing toward the seventh: two quick outs and a 1-0 lead. Aaron took a strike and then roped a long homer to make it 2-0. Shaken, Rush fell apart. Thomson singled. Adcock hit another homer to make it 3-0 , ... and the Braves cruised to a 6-0 win."
Obviously, Rush never had a 1-0 lead, and Adcock's HR made the score 4-0.

These are but a few examples. Most are inconsequential, but they're obvious mistakes, and they disturb the flow of the narrative. Upon reading that "teammates thought of [Aaron] as a gifted hitter, if not a bit aloof," I had to read the paragraph again to be sure of the intended meaning.

Then there is the frequent use of the term "millionth percentile," referring to Aaron and other superstars. I can't find a definition on the web, probably because it's a nonsense term. A percentile scale runs from 1 to 100, and no higher. Here's a definition of "percentile" from Princeton University's website: "any of the 99 numbered points that divide an ordered set of scores into 100 parts each of which contains one-hundredth of the total." Thus, "millionth percentile" has no literal meaning. If it was meant as hyperbole, it should have been used more judiciously; I counted at least seven times that it appeared in this book.

It's a shame that Pantheon Books, a division of Random House, apparently did not consider this biography of one of baseball's greatest players worth spending a few bucks on a good editor and/or proofreader.

No Shame in This Game - Must Read

This is a hands-on, front line study of America's working poor, a subject so infrequently covered in news media, with gross misunderstandings and negative stereotypes. Katherine Newman and a group of her graduate students from Columbia University spent years learning virtually ALL there is to know about the lives of workers in a fast food burger chain in Harlem in New York City. Through Newman's very accessible language we get to understand who these workers really are, what makes them settle for the lowest of ranks in the American Society, and what motivates them to go and find and keep these jobs.
Newman's very interesting approach is to take us into the lives of her "subjects", we get to know how and with whom do they live, who do they befriend and socialize with, how did they get their jobs and so much more. Relatively early on Newman makes a very clear point; the lives of the welfare poor and the working poor is so intertwined, and changes in welfare laws particularly those related to families with dependent children can make it virtually impossible for the working poor to carry on working. This conclusion emerges so very clearly as we get to know working poor with children whose ONLY possible childcare option is a welfare receiving relative looking after the family's young.
Newman deals very effectively with the cultural misconceptions about the fast food industry, reading this book you can no longer think of hamburger flippers as unskilled underachievers. Often these are brave people who have rejected the easy money drug culture, or people who have had to compete very hard to get low paying low status employment, or have to travel over an hour each way and leave young children behind. And these are jobs that require far more skill in operating equipment, planning and dealing with difficult people on daily basis than many higher paid higher status jobs. When Newman got into the details of the what these jobs really entail, I found myself thinking of much higher status jobs as being lower skilled and these jobs and the people who hold them specially in the inner city, where these are real jobs not pocket money generators, as truly worthy of respect.
Newman work covered a whole range of topics affecting the working poor including a great deal on the values of the working poor, these she found to be so "mainstream" indeed often close to conservative. Those at the bottom of the heap who put up with so much for so little had little tolerance for the do-nothing swindlers, but they did have a high level of tolerance for people otherwise. No Shame in My Game also deals extensively with education, what it means for the working poor and how the employers in the fast food industry encourage it. Indeed we see an alternate culture that encourages achievement is formed around the workplace.
The book also deals with the issues of race, within Harlem along with few examples from the wider world outside of it. We see clear evidence of patterns of discrimination based both on race and on birth place, with foreign born Hispanics fairing best despite of language handicaps and black Americans worst, while mainland US born Hispanics ranked in the middle. Newman also dealt with the prospects for advancement and with the issues of role models at some length.
As I read the book, I often wondered about two issues that appear to a large extent self inflicted, the Teen-age pregnancy was for me an obvious issue. Surely, life would be simpler and potential for advancement would be greater for young women who avoided this trap. Newman dealt with this to some extent by presenting research evidence of young poor women making a conscious decision of avoiding pregnancy when they have a clear path laid ahead of them towards education and attractive employment. Newman also touched on the possibility that teenage pregnancy is related in part to desire to have children at an early enough age to be able to get help from mothers and other relatives; with single parent family being the norm, and with the poor ailing and dying at young age. The second issue was mobility, with so many more jobs available in the suburbs and indeed with unemployment at record lows, why stay in Harlem? As I read on a clearer picture emerges of the society many of the working poor really inhabit. There are, contrary to the popular belief and indeed to mainstream America, there are very strong family links and neighborhood links. These links become vital for the poor with children who need looking after and for immigrants who cluster in apartment ghettos and pool resources in every conceivable way.
The last part of No Shame in My Game presents recommendations for dealing with the urban working poor. There are many interesting new ideas and discussions related to projects tried successfully in other parts of the country. Most of the ideas are presented in a logical and politically neutral fashion that is truly helpful, with significant emphasis being placed on business-school-government programs. A suggestion for raising minimum wage is presented along with the other ideas; it is hard to see how that may help even the sample of the working poor this book focused on, as these working poor live, earn money and spend it mostly in their poor community, and those wonderful employers in the fast food industry, operating on very thin margins, will be forced to either raise prices or reduce labor.
Overall I found No Shame in My Game a wonderful book, full of a great deal of insight, it is so well searched and presented. Newman's language and approach are appealing and the way she builds her arguments and reach conclusion comes across very logical and persuasive. While the recommendations chapter of the book could be extended to a whole book in its own right, and the issues involved are complex and difficult, I felt that additional recommendations on the issues of mobility, teen parenting and race would have been helpful.

"You do not know what honor means to an Afghan woman."

Unpretentious and powerful, Marciano's novel is painstakingly honest and revelatory. Not just a frightening foray into a part of the world few experience, the author conveys a sense of urgency, coupled with the real horror of war, the daily battering of a country that endures a concentration of violence as various factions fight for ascendancy. Two important characters drive the narrative: the relentlessly curious journalist for London's "Observer", Imogen Glass; and the more circumspect and emotionally vulnerable Italian photojournalist, Maria Galante. In what would seem the perfect pairing of Western aggression and natural sensitivity, the two women's temporary intrusion into Afghanistan is but another wild story for the worldly Glass, life-changing for the Italian who is charged with photographing the suffering faces of females in a culture that rigidly defines their roles in a manner that outrages Western sensibilities.

Retreating from the demands of photo-journalism after the demise of a long love affair, Maria has contented herself in a less demanding niche, photographing food for specialized magazines. Offered a unique opportunity to travel to Kabul with the larger-than-life Glass, Maria is at first reluctant to accept the assignment: a growing percentage of Afghan women have been self-immolating rather than submit to arranged marriages with much older men. The plight of Afghan women long a subject of interest to the public, it is Imo's task to write the back story and Maria's to capture the images of desperate women who would rather die than accept their fate. Fine on paper, the real time consequences of the assignment are daunting. Not only is Afghanistan dangerous, but to photograph such women is to court reprisal, dishonoring the victims in a culture as foreign to Imo and Maria as are the primitive conditions of this part of the world. Centuries-old traditions do not fall easily to the demands of journalistic curiosity, often heedless and disdainful of a way of life they cannot fathom.

Even after an intensive week of survival training, Maria is intimidated by the daily brutality of a country overrun with journalists, mercenaries, NGO workers, international contractors and the usual parasitic opportunists who descend on Afghanistan with various agendas, most of them lucrative. Their "fixer", Hanif, is critical to the success of the women's venture, not to mention their security. Without Hanif the women would be lost, but his very commitment to his obligations costs this man dearly. In a rapidly disintegrating arena, where expedience dictates most critical decisions, Imo imposes the entitlement of her profession on the task. Galante is at first dwarfed by her companion's personality; yet it is Maria who finds her voice in a frustrating and humiliating experience where priorities are skewed at best, mostly tragic. A nightmarish wartime landscape is illuminated in this powerful novel, small pearls of wisdom brilliantly inserted where least expected. In a moment in the grand scheme of a mad world, the essence of humanity is captured in this remarkable, devastating novel: "I had found her gift hidden in the fold of my own fear." Francesca Marciano has taken her readers to Kenya in Rules of the Wild, and to Italy in Casa Rossa; this time, she takes her readers to the blighted, thrilling country of Afghanistan. The End of Manners is a captivating story of a mismatched pair of women journalists covering what they soon realize is an impossible assignment in a place most Westerners visit only through the morning headlines and the evening news.

The narrator of the adventure, food photographer Maria Galante, is hand-picked by confident and successful journalist Imo Glass, to report on Afghan women who attempted to commit suicide to avoid arranged marriages. Maria leaves for Afghanistan prepared only with a brutal survival training course in England, and equipped with her camera and a series of ill-chosen articles of clothing.

Maria's time in Afghanistan is a series of tedious and futile interviews with NGO workers who refuse to risk exposing women, men firmly rooted in tradition, and women who know the consequences of sharing their stories. Maria and Imo confront the complex dynamics with which Afghans grapple against the startling backdrop of a war-torn country decorated with cell phone advertisements.

The End of Manners is a poignant depiction of Afghanistan as experienced by Westerners not entirely unlike ourselves. The beauty of the novel is in how easily and readily readers are caught up wanting the heroine to be braver, before realizing that they also would not be braver. Thus you are able to identify with the heroine, in contrast to familiar characters in similar novels that are too strong and too resilient to be real to Western readers. By making Maria real in this way, Francesca Marciano also makes Afghanistan real.

This stunning novel takes Western readers behind our headlines and news clips to a place that does exist, that is not easily understood, and that, as Maria accepts, cannot be condensed into our photographs and articles.

Francesca Marciano's latest book is set in Afghanistan which most of us only know through the news media. The story is plausible, powerful, poignant and insightful. And in her poetic and elegant writing style she paints a vivid picture of this sad, haunting, strangely beautiful and often frightening land, located at the far end of the earth and with a culture lost in time.

The story is simple. Maria, a shy Italian photographer, still emotionally fragile after the breakup of a long relationship, reluctantly accepts an assignment outside her normally safe line of food photography. After first completing a mandatory and grueling survival course, she joins Imo, a successful and intimidating magazine journalist, who unlike herself, brims with self confidence and ambition. Their mission in Afghanistan often appears poorly planned. The task is to do a story on Afghan women who, rather than be forced into arranged marriages with much older men, are willing to attempt suicide. As narrow as this subject is, it is hard for them to succeed as they find out in several attempted interviews with the locals who are very reluctant to open up to, or be photographed by foreigners. Against the harsh backdrop of a war-torn land, complete with mercenaries, arms dealers, NGOs, foreign contractors, journalists and an array of locals, an unlikely friendship develops between the two women and also with their guide on whom they are very dependent. The contrast in cultures and values is glaring and the moral dilemmas that are thrown up cannot be ignored.

To me, 'Rules of the Wild' was brilliant, but then I was disappointed in 'Casa Rosa'. This is a thoughtful, informative and beautifully written book.

"La case de la laguna" ( "The House on the Lagoon" ) is the story of Quintin Mendizabal and his wife, Isabel Monfort. Isabel, a fledgling novelist, is writing a multigenerational novel about the history of their families, of Spanish and Corsican origins, and their arrival in Puerto Rico. Her ambition is great, but her sense of history comically weak. When Quintin, who happens to be a historian, finds her manuscript, he begins to write alternate chapters expressing his own point of view. Isabel colorfully weaves a tapestry of life among the ruling classes of Puerto Rico, with their passionate debates about independence, statehood, racism; their links to Spain and Europe; and their ambivalence toward the United States. But as she draws a self-portrait of her marriage as well, it becomes clear that her relationship with her husband is far from picture-perfect. Quintin becomes incensed at Isabel's version of events, at her audacity in writing a book, and an autobiographical one at that. And Isabel, in her struggle to forge a new identity and free herself from her coercive marriage and the constraints of the culture, precipitates a conflagration that threatens to consume the entire family.

About the Author
Rosario Ferre was born in Puerto Rico, where her father served as governor. She holds a doctorate in Spanish from the University of Maryland. She is best known for her novels and short stories. Her literary career began with the publication of the controversial literary journal "Zona". "Carga y Descarga" in 1972, and her first short story collection, "The Youngest Doll", was published in 1976. She has been a faculty member at the University of Puerto Rico, Rutgers University, and Johns Hopkins University. In 1992, Ferre was awarded the Liberatur Prix award at the Frankfurt Book Fair for the German translation of her novel "Sweet Diamond Dust". She was a finalist for the National Book Award for her novel "The House on the Lagoon" in 1995. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from Brown University and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in creative arts. She was also the recipient of the prestigious Medal for Literature of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in 2009. Rosario Ferre lives in Puerto Rico with her family.

Este libro es excepcional. La novela esta llena de amor, comedia, tragedia y suspenso...todo lo que uno necesita para quedarse despierto hasta terminarla! El final te pide mas. El libro es una gran ventana mirando el pasado del Puerto Rico dividio en las clases sociales, ideologias politicas y morales. Presenta los problemas sociales de una manera real que hace a uno analizar sus ideas. Cada Puertorriqueno debe leerla. Rosario Ferre es una extraordinaria escritora. AAA+++!

Interesting, a must-read for Latin American Lit buffs!

La Casa de la Laguna is the type of reading that is hard to put down once started. It's literary style is deliciously complex "a la Garcia Marquez", using the majic realism technique captured by Mr. Marquez's movement, with a "feminine touch". She renews the magic realisms essence by borrowing elements from other genres and movements. A little romanticism, history, impressionism and vanguard, Ms. Ferre has quite successfully mastered the art of playing with narrative voice, manipulating narrative consciousness and point of view to the advantage of the main character - or is there a "main character"...? The author toys with the reader as historical anecdotes are devilishly played with. By exploiting this narrative style her point is subtle yet powerful - truth is in the eye of the beholder... It entices the reader to go beyond the voice of characters and delve into reviewing the history of Puerto Rico. From this perspective alone, the story encourages the reader to further seek knowledge on the history of the island - the lines between fiction and reality are that thin! It is also a great way to break generational barriers, as it encourages discussions between generations on the Puerto Rico that once "was", the Puerto Rico Ms. Ferre describes and the Puerto Rico that "is". The novel explores many issues ranging from politics, values, gender roles, the multi-ethnicity of the puertorrican culture, sexuality and others. A refreshing way to digest current hot topics of interest, such as the political status of the Commonwealth of Puert Rico. From a literary analysis perspective, the reading offers a banquet of options for study. It may, however, given its regionally defined environment, appeal mostly to a "hispanic" audience, predominantly Puerto Rican. If you are serious about literature and its genders/styles I would encourage you to review other publications pertaining to Puerto Rico affairs as well as other Latin American literatu! re, countries history, culture and politics. Otherwise, read it just for fun!

Extraordinario!!!

Es un libro que te capta la atencion. Ella hace que te penetres en la historia como si estuvieras ahi. Me encanta por que describe la historia de Puerto Rico y nos presenta como fue cambiando poco a poco. Me gusta la forma en que escribe y me ha interesado leer otros libros que ella halla escrito. Me siento muy orgullosa de que Puerto Rico tenga una escritora de tan alta calidad como ella.
