With only five days to go before Christmas, several doses of bad luck have befallen Tad Leary, the hero of this funny, if thin, second novel by playwright and humorist O'Donnell (Getting Over Homer). Tad has been without a steady lover since he broke up with his boyfriend a year ago. Now, he has just been fired from his job as a storyteller at an exclusive Manhattan elementary school. Moreover, the actor from whom Tad sublets his West Side apartment wants it back. In the course of one day, Tad makes the rounds of six parties he's been invited to (there is a seventh, but he can't remember where or what it is). The parties are a clever device O'Donnell uses to examine and satirize a slice of Manhattan life that he appears to know down to the last hors d'oeuvre. Tad himselfAa baby-faced 34-year-old grad student in folkloreA"can bear reality only by dressing it in metaphor." He comes across as the date you feel sorry for, which makes him an unpromising protagonist and delegates the vitality and fun of this very stagy novel to its over-the-top supporting cast. There's Les, Tad's formerly upwardly mobile brother, whose suicide attempt seems to have cauterized the ambition center in his brain: the last we see of him, he's walking a gingerbread man across his wife's buffet, introducing him to the doughnuts. And then there's Yoni, who "once organized a campaign to get 'all you can eat' restaurants declared illegal on health grounds"; now she works as a "white witch, psychic masseur" and "erotomantic hipstress" and plans to serve cheese made from human breast milk at her next performance. If Tad never really comes to life, it's because the novel is essentially a group satire of a New York demimonde, with Tad more a personification of a type than a character with whom we can empathize.

O'Donnell (Getting Over Homer, LJ 3/1/96) brings us one day in the life of Tad Leary, a short, baby-faced, unemployed, about-to-be-evicted 34-year-old gay man. Tad is so confused that he's sometimes not even sure he's gay. The story follows him through his social engagements on a Sunday five days before Christmas. He drinks his way around Manhattan from the East Village, where he attends a reception for a friend's latest piece of self-indulgent performance art, to brunch with his Irish American family at the home of his older brother (who is more successful in business than he was in a recent suicide attempt), to a chic Upper East Side party at the apartment of a former lover. While Tad keeps up a steady stream of witty one-liners, he never becomes a sympathetic character. In the end, the reader, though amused, still doesn't know what makes Tad think and drink. It's December 20th, and poor gay Tad's love life is in a shambles. He's lost his teaching job at the tony Manhattan elementary school where he's staff storyteller, is about to be evicted from his apartment, andmy God!he's 34, older than Christ! Humorist O'Donnell's fiction (Getting Over Homer, 1996, etc.) is usually well-received for its loopy, silly narrative verve. But at times, his style overblows every little waterfly that skims across his mind (Tad needed to unwrap a fresh bar of soap in order to shower, and he squirmed at its sharp edges, like rubbing a wooden box against himself, as he lathered up under the spigot's impersonal torrent). Here, a long round of Christmas parties and get-togethers sends Tad, Scrooge-like, through a dense life-review, including discussions about death (his friend Yoni says she'd like to die the traditional way, the ``during orgasm'' route). Along the way, there's a clutch of quite moving moments, as the odyssey culminates with most of his losses restored: Friends offer him sleeping space, and his school may take him back. Life is a lovely empty glass to be refilledbut not before a final leaning toward suicide in frigid Central Park. Will this be the first annual gay literary Christmas carol? An oddly sweet, uplifting little tale...

Even though some reviewers did not like this book, I thought it was a lovely little novel. It is a week before Christmas in Manhattan and Tad, our protagonist, has just been fired from his job at an elementary school (as a story-teller) because an affectionate child has told his mother that Tad was his favorite hugger or some such nonsense (the mother is, of course, on the board or somehow related to those who worry about this). Tad has also realized that the apartment he has occupied for some time will no longer be available to him as the rightful owner is coming home. It is a Sunday and Tad has been invited to seven different events (functions) which he decides that morning he will attend in spite of the feelings of doom and gloom and utter loneliness he is feeling about his life. The reason I so liked this little book is because, while droll in its humor, it was at a very basic level, uplifting. We have brunch with Tad's family who are bizarre yet strangely accommodating, especially a brother he was never close to but who provides him with some food for thought. We meet old friends of Tad's who offer him a place to stay for a while if he needs, we meet the sister of an old boyfriend (who Tad treated poorly) who is actually rather forgiving, we meet some other friends who are artists and so self-consumed and weird that Tad seems perfectly fine by comparison, we attend a high end party where Tad drinks too much, says the wrong things to the wrong people, yet manages to stir compassion in the (potential new boyfriend) heart of someone who returns his wallet. And we visit the basement in the elementary school Tad has just been fired from, some of his better co-workers who have snuck away from the holiday party and commiserate with him. I liked this book because Tad has every reason to be depressed and wallow in self pity and yet he ventures out in his very vulnerable state and manages to let people take care of him in a very off-hand sweet sort of way. He allows himself to see that life is not over and that things are going to turn up. I liked the whole premise.

A great holiday tale

Christmas is less than a week away, but for Tad Leary there is little to celebrate. He has just lost his job as the storyteller at a Manhattan elementary school. He is about to be tossed out of the apartment he is subletting. His thesis on folklore is past due and going nowhere. Worse yet, even though he is over thirty, all his friend, family, and associates treat him as if he is a child due to his short frame and boyish appearance.

In spite of his trouble's Tad has vowed to make this Christmas different. He plans to make the rounds by going to the seven parties he has been to attend. He hopes to land a job and a room for his marathon efforts and enjoy the season.

LET NOTH-ING YOU DIS-MAY is a wonderfully wacky seasonal tale that will bring joy to anyone who reads the novel. Tad is a great character, struggling with his recent set-backs, his sexual preference, and his treatment by one and all. Mark O'Donnell is a gifted humorist, who brings the likes of Thurber into the late nineties as Tad is the urban, poor man's Walter Mitty (without the dreams of grandeur). Like his previous novel, GETTING OVER HOMER, Mr. O'Donnell gifts his audience with a non-stop jocular story that demonstrates even when it is too dark for Green Lantern's ring, there remains the light of comedy to pull one through the night.

Leibovitz has become a celebrity in her own right since starting her career at Rolling Stone and then moving on to work at Vogue and Vanity Fair. She is well known for her photographs of some of the icons of 20th-century culture-rock stars, movie stars, politicians, athletes, and novelists, as well as many other famous figures, often posing her subjects in unconventional and surprising ways. Sontag's thought-provoking essay gives further insight and explanation. By now, Liebovitz is famous for her many portraits of celebrities and public figures in magazines such as Vanity Fair and Vogue. Time and again she cleanly captures the "story" of people who are perhaps too much in the camera's eye. Her work, however, is not limited to those seemingly commanding presences. Here many portraits of famous women (such as a heroic Toni Morrison, a perfectly authentic Martha Stewart, and a sexy Jerry Hall suckling her son Gabriel Jagger) are combined with Liebovitz's less well known but entirely interesting portraits of obscure women. She elicits a sort of surprising honesty from these less-practiced models. The most striking include a direct glance from Morgan W. Kelly, a young, well-chalked teacher in South Bronx; a series of paired portraits of Las Vegas showgirls in costume (color) and in daily life (black-and-white); and the cleverly juxtaposed dual portrait of two gently shy, and obese, women in front of a pick-up truck followed by one of two young girls in the back of that truck displaying their Barbie dolls. Sontag's essay on beauty and the role of photography comments on the changing status of women in America while challenging the viewer really to see this amazing array of photographs and individuals. A surprise treat

I was browsing through a bookstore, waiting for my kids to get done with Boy Scouts, not looking for anything in particular, when I spied "Women" on a shelf near an easy chair. The plain cover of this large book intrigued me so I started to skim through the book. After about a minute, I sat down and spent 45 more minutes going through the book, page by page. I had never heard of the book and only vaguely know the authors from popular culture, but I'm hooked now. As a busy working mother I don't usually have the time to spend enjoying fine art, photography, or coffee table books. I have to say that this is an inspiring piece of work that had me so engaged in some of the photos that I conjured up my own life stories for these women in my mind and thought about what their real life is like, how to meet them, etc. Annie's photographs really spoke to me.
I heartily recommend this book -- it's food for the soul. I only regret that I paid so much for the book that night (I had to give it to my best friend the next day).

"WOMEN" is Challenging, Purposeful

I'd give Leibovitz four stars for the sole reason that she tackled "WOMEN" as a concept.
How does one portray "WOMEN" completely? It's as daunting and impossible as stating that one can portray "ETERNITY" or "LIFE" or "TRUTH" in their fullest senses.
There are those that have argued that Leibovitz's book gives preferential treatment to some subjects, while demeaning or diminishing others. For example, the photos of famous women are often glossy, flattering, and classically "pretty," while the photos of non-famous women are more often stark, harsh, and jolting to the senses.
I do not disagree.
What comes into question, however, is our definition of beauty. Society tells us that Drew Barrymore sprawled on the ground is beautiful. A group of coal-blackened female miners is not. That's society talking, not Annie Leibovitz - and certainly not the individual reader/viewer.
Instead, I choose to think that what Leibovitz was trying to do with "WOMEN" was to challenge these stereotypes and expectations. On every page, she attempts to portray the essence of the women she is photographing. For a Hollywood actress, that may very well mean a glamorous, "pretty" setting. For Helene Grimaud, it's a piano. For Wendy Suzuki, it's a scientific laboratory, and for Lenda Murray, it's a Ms. Olympia costume. Instead of labeling and sorting these images, (as society is often apt to do), Leibovitz presents them one after another in a colossal photographic accomplishment she calls "WOMEN."
No, she doesn't manage to express the concept completely. I doubt if anyone could. But she does manage to challenge, enlighten, and empower her readers/viewers with her portrayal of the diverse women she selected to photograph.
For me, that in itself is beautiful.

Sontag and Leibovitz have created a paean to womanhood!

I purchased a copy of this book as a gift for a family member, but when it arrived, I could not resist removing the shrink wrap. The rest is history; I was profoundly moved by the selection and editing process which must have gone into this book. While not one given to femi-babble, I have to say that this splendid photography and essay empower every American woman to be and do whatever it is that she wants to be and do. What a wonderful way to start or end a millennium! (Of course, I had to come back to Amazon for additional copies!)

Maybe Ok for First Timers

I bought last years' copy of this book after reading an older copy from the library. I wanted my own copy so that I would have access to the most recent calculation process to determine "Expected Family Contribution" (EFC) under the "Institutional Methodology" (IM) and the "Federal Methodology" (FM).

In the current version of this book, though, they have dropped the instructions for calculating EFC under the IM. Instead, the book substitutes some case studies, which are pretty much worthless. Shame on The Princeston Review for caving in to the whims of the College Board. Now somebody else needs to do the work they didn't do to get the IM formulas into the light of day again.

If you're a first timer, you need to read this book, or one like it. But once you've got the basic scheme understood, there's no need to buy the new version of this book every year. If you're an old hand, and you want the most recent FM formulas to calculate your EFC, just go to the Princeton Review web site and tack-on "financialaidupdate" and you can see the FM formulas.

Disappointed

I had high hopes for "Paying for College Without Going Broke" by Kal Chaney. I have a freshman in private university and was rather shocked by the financial aid process as it exists today versus many years ago when I attended college. I read through the book, which is geared more towards parents and students approaching college years. The book does point out some strategies and tactics, but large portions of the book provide step by step instructions for filling out tax and college financial aid applications. This information could be covered by providing tips rather than page after page of instructions for forms. Also, the key punchline to the book, a family's expected contribution towards education is sort of hidden at the end of the book. This critical information could have been presented in a more straightforward manner at the beginning of the book, and discussed in an open and critical manner. It's almost as if the book in some ways contributes to the opaque process of determining financial aid.

Finally, I emailed the author with a couple of questions after finishing the book. I received a very terse response to my inquiry. I followed up with an apology and simple question, and received no response from the author. I think a reader deserves a better response than this to a question after reading a supposed "how to" book.

Needs more focus on current rules, less on the history! Web address to 'Online Index' is wrong!

I consider myself kind of a personal finance nerd, but I found this very difficult to slog through. In particular, Ch2 reads more like a history of the changes to the financial aid system. Word of advice to the authors: I understand that later editions are just 'pile-ones' to the existing material... but if I buy the 2016 edition... I really don't care what the rules were like in 2002 or 2009! It bogs down the text and makes it VERY confusing. Some careful pruning of the older material would go a long way to making this more readable.

        But his overriding and enduring passion was for Zionism, a cause that--although he had no Jewish blood--he embraced when posted to British-ruled Palestine in 1936. There he raised the Special Night Squads, an irregular force that decimated Arab rebel bands and taught a future generation of Israeli generals how to fight.

        In 1941, Wingate led another guerrilla-style force, this time into Italian-occupied Ethiopia, where he was instrumental in restoring Emperor Haile Selassie to his throne. But the campaign that was to bring him world fame was conducted behind enemy lines in Burma, where his Chindits shattered the myth of Japanese invincibility in jungle fighting, giving Allied morale a much-needed boost at a crucial point in World War II.

        Throughout his career, Wingate's unconventionality and disdain for the superiors he dismissed as "military apes" marked him as a difficult if not impossible subordinate. He was that, but also, as this vigorous new study reveals, an inspiring leader.

John Bierman and Colin Smith's enlightening and rigorous biography of this brilliant man amply demonstrates how the conservative establishment of the British Army could come to adopt such an ungracious attitude to one of their most dynamic sons, who contributed so much to the war effort with dazzling performances in Abyssinia and Burma, and so much to future strategic thinking with his bold formulation of new methods. The English General Orde Wingate is the only foreign officer to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He is revered in Israel. In his native U.K., there are still those who resent him. Bierman (Righteous Gentile, a biography of Raoul Wallenberg) and Smith (Carlos: Portrait of a Terrorist) sympathetically portray Wingate's eccentric and combative personality and his equally remarkable, although short, career at arms. There is a distinctly Lawrence of Arabia flavor to Wingate's story. He fetches up in impossibly remote corners of the world, rallies a poorly armed but elusive force and attacks the enemy behind their own lines. This pattern was established in the Sudan, recurred in Palestine and Abyssinia and finally in Burma, where Wingate fought the Japanese until his death in a plane crash in March 1943. The Wingate summoned up in this book was hard on his men, harder on himself and hardest of all on his superiors. He emerges as arrogant, bitterly resentful of anyone who dared advance contrary ideas or question his monopolizing of scarce resources. Wingate's detractors are given their say, as are those who revered him, including Chaim Weizmann and Winston Churchill, whose patronage made Wingate's career possible. The authors obviously admire Wingate's accomplishments, especially his role in prewar Palestine, where, as an ardent Zionist, he instilled professionalism in what would become the Israeli army. NOT THE STANDARD WARRIOR GENTLEMAN

Having been brought up on stories from my early years about the brave and often forgotten exploits of the Chindits I was very enthused to tuck into this book. Orde Wingate has been the hero of many, not so much because he was a military successful warrior, but because he was wildly unconventional at a time when staid ethics and methods of war were leading to defeats of the western allies on all fronts.
A fierce Old Testament fear and learning of the bible bread in what would now be called a fundementalist christian family, he blended this with [...] eccentricities like, indifference to appearing nude before his collegues and newspapermen, a complete indifference to British Monarchy and the hierarchical class-bound society and way of thinking. An appreciator of new ideas and probably quite to the left of many of his superiors, he had no hestation in punishing and physically striking his recruits (no matter their colour), and could kill the enemy mercilessly, or order large groups knowingly to their death without a blink.
Wingate pioneered unconventional warfare with his notion that large unit groups can function in the rear of the enemy for long periods of time if they were self-sufficient and well trained. He eschewed the entire idea of "special forces" as they are often called nowadays. In the end I do not think that he squared the circle large unit action and special forces --- he wanted both and got really neither. His tactics worked rather well against the Italians (but that was no surprise he realised), but they were problematic against the Japanese. The first operation, "Long Cloth" was an unmitigated disaster, with enough adventures from its many participants to fill an entire library (they still make some of the most heart thumping reads available). The entire operation broke down and became in some cases, every man for himself. Wingate himself giving the order.
His second operation was more problematic. No doubt these operations had significant effect on the enemy and no doubt were very helpful in the taking of Myikyena and Mogang, but I really think that 14th Army would have rolled up the Japanese flank nicely anyway, as they did and win the Battle of Burma with overwhelming firepower and troops as well unmitigated air superiority.
In the end the Japanese in Burma were beaten by traditional large unit engagements.
That is not a defeat of the ideas of Orde Wingate, nor do they negate the incredible bravery of the men who served with him. What it does DO however is to put to rest the idea that Orde Wingate was a purveyor of "Truth" -- his ideas were worthy, but they were not the be-all end-all of jungle combat. His developments were prodigeous and his personal bravery never in doubt. But I think that, like Moses, he got involved too much in fanatical devotion to one idea and was willing to sacrifice a lot for an idea. In the case of Moses, his people --- in the case of Wingate, it was often his own troops.
This books admirably chronicles the multifacted nature of Wingate. It is factual and comes across as neutral as possible, often citing critical sources and those men (also of incredible courage) that did not fall under his spell.
The narrative is tight and WELL EDITED. Unlike your regular 1000 page biography Smith and Beirman are able to deal with the subject adequately in 400 pages with nothing substantive missing. Also there is just enough detail of almost all of his life. The final 150 pages deals with the Burma campaign the authors are very skillful in their use of detail. They include all of the crucial elements necessary of his many campaigns.
I found the book to be a very admirable read. I think that it only deepened the questions I have about Wingate --- was he a daring experimenter or a madman? --- I think that one can add, bitterly-troubled person to the heap of other appelations surrounding this man.
I still ask myself, if this man were my commander would I succumb and become a convert? Would I stand aloof and protest that something is terribly wrong? I do not know, and cannot judge because I was not born at the time these events transpired. I was not a part of this great crusade, the glory they gained or the horrors they endured.

One good read begets two

Some time ago, I read QUARTERED SAFE OUT HERE, the wartime memoirs of George MacDonald Fraser concerning the time he spent in the Other Ranks of the British imperial army that recaptured Burma from the Japanese in World War II. In his book, Fraser mentions the high regard the troops had for the army commander, William Slim. I subsequently read DEFEAT INTO VICTORY by Field-Marshal Viscount Slim, a personal account by the man who commanded the Fourteenth Indian Army during its bitter retreat from, and its glorious return march through, Burma. In his volume, Slim mentions the unorthodox British general Orde Wingate's contributions to the Japanese defeat in Southeast Asia. Thus, FIRE IN THE NIGHT, Wingate's biography.
Co-authored by John Bierman and Colin Smith, FIRE IN THE NIGHT is the immensely readable life story of an incredibly complex man. In a nutshell, after several brief chapters on Wingate's early life, the narrative sequentially covers his postings in Palestine, Ethiopia and, finally, India/Burma, during which time (1936-1944) he rose in rank from Lieutenant to Major General. In the British Mandate of Palestine, Orde became an ardent Zionist while fighting Arab "gangs" with Special Night Squads, the armed detachments of British regulars and Jews which he himself brought into being. In Ethiopia, his was a key role in the British victorious military effort to drive the Italians from the country and return Haile Selassie to the thrown. In India, Wingate's ultimate triumph before an untimely death was to conceive, form, train and deploy the Third Indian Division, the "Chindits", as a Special Force to insert behind Japanese lines in Northern Burma to destroy the enemy's means of communication and supply.
To my mind, the strength of this book is that it gives the reader an excellent overview of Wingate the man and soldier without getting bogged down in an overabundance of detail. Certainly, the subject of Wingate's character, obsessions and eccentricities could fill volumes. He was admired and loved by the men he literally led into battle. (He drove them hard, but he drove himself even harder.) Conversely, he was loathed by many of his officer peers and superiors for his arrogance, outspokenness, rudeness and personal slovenliness. (He was on record as calling some of his more Blimpish superiors "military apes".) But, he also had his admirers in high places, most notably Winston Churchill and Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Supreme Commander of all allied forces in Southeast Asia.
Perhaps the most endearing of Wingate's traits were his eccentricities. For example, he carried a wind-up alarm clock on his person because he considered watches unreliable. And then there was his attitude to personal nudity best illustrated by an incident during the wide press acclaim following his first Chindit campaign. An Australian correspondent invited to the general's hotel room in Delhi wrote:
"I found him sitting naked on his bed, eyes buried deep in a book. He hardly glanced up as I entered and rather gruffly asked what I wanted. ... He wasn't interested in me or my requirements, but seemed most excited about the book he was reading ... a critical commentary of Emily Bronte and her work."
Can you imagine those media hogs of the Second World War - Patton, Montgomery and MacArthur - doing that?

An Objective Treatise on Wingate, Man and General

Orde Wingate was a man of extremes and those whose lives he touched either loved him or hated him. Books written about him have largely reflected this, usually taking one side or the other. At last, here is a book that allows readers to decide for themselves in a brilliant, thoroughly researched work, that presents all the extreme facets of General Wingate. It is well argued, with its conclusions backed by documented evidence, and beautifully written in a fashion that makes it appealing to read as a book, rather than just a reference.
From Wingate's early days at Harrow and the beginning of his military career, the reader follows his personal battles with himself and with others. The reader is launched after Wingate as he finds his feet in Palestine in with little regard for convention, either social or military. His first forays in to guerilla warfare, both successful and not, are embellished with personal evidence from credible historical witnesses. His subsequent banishment from Palestine, following policital dabbling above his station, is described, backed by his utter conviction about Zionism that was to colour the rest of his career.
The reader is then invited to rejoin the fray with Wingate as he develops his guerilla techniques, restoring Haile Selassie to his Ethiopian throne. Throughout, the impression of Wingate as a inspirational leader who was a thorn in the side of his superiors in re-inforced.
The final chapter in Wingate's life begins with an unexpected and unwelcome posting to Burma at Wavell's behest to harry to Japanese as they over-run Burma in a bid to drive the British from India. Spendid, accounts of Wingate's audacious cultivation of senior figures, including Churchill and Mountbatten, lie alongside his uncanny ability to forge enemies as he bullies and cajoles the system in to supporting his Chindit operations.
The demise of the Chindits after Wingate's untimely death and subsequent attempts to besmirch him, his techniques and achievements, form the epilogue of this outstanding book.

Four previous books have attempted to unravel the mystery of how and why FBI staffer Robert Hanssen was able to sell secrets to the KGB for almost 22 years. None, however, have been as penetrating as this account by veteran spy author Wise (The Invisible Government), whom Hanssen himself reportedly called "the best espionage writer around." Using a career's worth of contacts in the FBI and CIA, as well as exclusive access to Hanssen's defense psychiatrist, Wise presents a comprehensive portrait of Hanssen's life as a spy and the government's quest to uncover and prosecute him. Many books about FBI counterintelligence agent Robert Hanssen have already been published, including David A. Vise's The Bureau and the Mole and Elaine Shannon's The Spy Next Door. While the story of how Hanssen was tracked down is certainly interesting, it is even more intriguing to speculate why this conservative Catholic with a modest lifestyle would betray us to the Soviets. Journalist Wise, who wrote The Spy Who Got Away, a similar book about escaped CIA traitor Edward Lee Howard, interviewed Hanssen's case psychiatrist and thus provides considerable informed discussion about motive. Was it for the money to support his big family, the thrill of playing a dangerous game, or to get back at a never-satisfied father? Hanssen apparently walked right into a Soviet office in 1979, which leads to the question whether the CIA and FBI were watching this office-and if not, why not? Oh What Tangled Webs He Weaved

Robert Hanssen was in a league of his own. There wasn't another spy to compare him to, and not only for the amount of damage he did to compromise American intelligence to Russia. This was a man of several contradictions. It must have been hard for him to keep his respective roles straight. He was an agent for the FBI, a devoted family man, devout Catholic, obsessed with porn, spying for Russia, and became infatuated with a stripper to the extent that he took her on a trip to Hong Kong and bought her a Mercedes. He was the computer guru who appeared contemptious of other co-workers. It appears to me that he often employed the defense mechanism called reaction formation which means he took an attitude with others the opposite of which produced anxiety in himself. He not only betrayed his country by using his job for personal gain, but horribly betrayed his wife by sharing sexual photos of her to his friend. Hanssen justifies his spying by saying his first job at the FBI was in Scarsdale, New York, and the cost of living there with his minimal salary forced him into needing extra money. Hanssen spent over 20 years compromising America's secrets through approximately 18 drops of documents for the Russians. His Russian contact made sure to massage Hanssen's ego with flattery in communication with him. What the Russians paid for this information was a pittance compared to its value. A tunnel built under the Soviet embassy in Washington that cost hundreds of millions of dollars was for naught as he passed this on to the Russians. Three Soviets working for the FBI were named by Hanssen and were called back to Russia and executed. Apparently it didn't bother his conscience because he would always confess his spying along with his other sins to a Catholic priest. It doesn't appear right to me that he should be able to confess such law infractions and not be reported, but that's another story. This is the third book I've read on Robert Hanssen's life of espionage, and I feel this one is the best.

Does a biracial child from Louisiana belong with the black family who wants to adopt her or in the indifferent foster care system that has classified her as white? Kennedy, who created a media storm with Nigger, begins his third book about race with an obscure 1952 legal case that addresses this question, then traces the customs, laws and myths surrounding interracial relationships that came before and after it. As in Nigger, Kennedy's controversial examination of the taboo word, much of this book centers on legal actions and court rulings. It is laced with enough anecdotes and pop culture references, however, to make it an accessible, compelling read for anyone. The Harvard law professor even wrote to people who placed what he calls "racially discriminatory" personal ads (SWM seeks SWF, for example), asking them to explain themselves (few did). For the most part, the book stays focused on black and white relationships, and Kennedy dutifully but unremarkably covers well-known examples such as the slavery era's Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings and the 20th century's O.J. Simpson and Nicole Brown Simpson. He is at his best and most instructive tackling issues like racial passing (he devotes an entire chapter to a mid-20th-century interracial couple and their daughter's Imitation of Life-like attempts to pass for white) and interracial adoption (he deplores race matching as "a destructive practice in all its various guises"). While Kennedy points out that race relations have made huge strides since the 1952 Louisiana adoption case, he also openly conveys his disappointment at how America remains "a pigmentocracy" influenced by white supremacist notions. The book provides plenty of examples to back up this assertion, but stops short of offering tangible solutions.

A painfully beautiful book

The author pulls the mirror up to our faces and makes us confront our own prejudices today and mourn our prejudices of the past. Of all the things I come away with in this book, I wholeheartedly support the author in his view that race matching in adoption is a destructive practice in all its various guises. Yes, 'it ought to be replaced by a system under which children in need of homes may be assigned to the care of foster or adoptive parents as quickly as reasonably possible.' We have several couples in our neighborhood who have adopted children of other races, and two black children are among them. This is real progress.

This is a full account of the history of legal and social challenges

Randall's book is a very accurate account of the history of interracial relationships of the Black/nonblack variety, most particularly the troublesome and controversial Black-White relationships and marriage. Mr. Kennedy traces the history of interracial relationships from the Colonial/slavery times to the early decade of the 21st century. Mr. Kennedy really knows his history and law regarding this elephant in the room, i.e., interracial relationships between Blacks and Whites.

I recommend this book along with J.A. Rogers' Sex and Race. I hope people open their eyes to the largely unexplored and controversial issue of multiracial relationships.

This book is incredible! Comprehensive in presenting interracial relationships throughout U.S. History - including modern adoption practices. I have a master's degree in U.S. History specializing in race relations and highly recommend this book. Be certain to pay attention to the notes at the bottom of the pages for even more meat.

About the Author
Kal Chany is the founder and president of Campus Consultants, an independent New York-based firm that has helped thousands of families get financial aid since 1984. He has authored articles on college funding for Parade and other publications, and has appeared on ABC's Good Morning America, CBS's Evening News, CNN's Your Money, and NPR's "Talk of the Nation," among other prominent shows.

Maybe Ok for First Timers

I bought last years' copy of this book after reading an older copy from the library. I wanted my own copy so that I would have access to the most recent calculation process to determine "Expected Family Contribution" (EFC) under the "Institutional Methodology" (IM) and the "Federal Methodology" (FM).

In the current version of this book, though, they have dropped the instructions for calculating EFC under the IM. Instead, the book substitutes some case studies, which are pretty much worthless. Shame on The Princeston Review for caving in to the whims of the College Board. Now somebody else needs to do the work they didn't do to get the IM formulas into the light of day again.

If you're a first timer, you need to read this book, or one like it. But once you've got the basic scheme understood, there's no need to buy the new version of this book every year. If you're an old hand, and you want the most recent FM formulas to calculate your EFC, just go to the Princeton Review web site and tack-on "financialaidupdate" and you can see the FM formulas.

Disappointed

I had high hopes for "Paying for College Without Going Broke" by Kal Chaney. I have a freshman in private university and was rather shocked by the financial aid process as it exists today versus many years ago when I attended college. I read through the book, which is geared more towards parents and students approaching college years. The book does point out some strategies and tactics, but large portions of the book provide step by step instructions for filling out tax and college financial aid applications. This information could be covered by providing tips rather than page after page of instructions for forms. Also, the key punchline to the book, a family's expected contribution towards education is sort of hidden at the end of the book. This critical information could have been presented in a more straightforward manner at the beginning of the book, and discussed in an open and critical manner. It's almost as if the book in some ways contributes to the opaque process of determining financial aid.

Finally, I emailed the author with a couple of questions after finishing the book. I received a very terse response to my inquiry. I followed up with an apology and simple question, and received no response from the author. I think a reader deserves a better response than this to a question after reading a supposed "how to" book.

Strategies for anyone in any financial situation

A simple metaphor wraps up this entire book. Imagine someone is taking your photograph, the author says. You try to make yourself look as good as possible, right? You smile, you suck in your gut, straighten your tie. But in the game of college admissions -- and yes, folks, it is a game -- you're going for the exact opposite effect. You want to look as bad as possible to a college, so they'll offer you the very best financial aid package. So that means knowing where to put your assets and when, what kind of debt to assume and when, how to fill out the forms to your advantage and what changes to make from one college year to the next.

Sound confusing? It is! My eyes glazed over by the time I got halfway through the book. But, if you're in a situation where your child isn't likely to get academic or athletic scholarships and finances are going to be a problem, a parent might be willing to wade through all this arcane financial advice. And the advice often goes against accepted wisdom about wise financial moves: Take on debt? Sure! Pay more in taxes? It's good for you! Buy a car, fix up your house, take a vacation... get those assets out of here!

On the one hand, it makes me sad that this is the reality of affording college today. But on the other hand, if taking some of the suggestions in this book will help my child build the future he envisions, I am all for it. If it's legal and ethical and advantageous, count me in. This book is worth your time both for the financial strategies it outlines and in the hand-holding it provides for filling out forms and submitting applications. I learned several things I didn't know and am glad to know as we enter this "competition" with our child.

In our run-up to the college application process, I've found a few books to be of infinite value. First, The Perfect Score Project: One Mother's Journey to Uncover the Secrets of the SAT by Debbie Stier got us started on at-home SAT prep a year in advance of the test date. We use the College Board's Official SAT Question of the Day app and the practice tests in The Official SAT Study Guide. Second, The College Solution: A Guide for Everyone Looking for the Right School at the Right Price by Lynn O'Shaughnessy got us thinking about what factors schools look at, financial and otherwise, when making admissions decisions. Adding in this book, I think we're prepared to start making decisions that might help some dreams become reality. NOTE: There is a 2015 edition. Amazon erroneously sent me the 2014 edition, but the error was quickly resolved.
