Another of Thompson's autobiographical titles and supposedly true, fans know that half of this is inseparable from his crime writings. Whether fact or fiction, this 1954 title makes for fun reading. Also look for Thompson's novel The Golden Gizmo (ISBN 0-375-70032-3), now also available from Vintage.

About the Author
(1906 - 1977) James Meyers Thompson was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He began writing fiction at a very young age, selling his first story to True Detective when he was only fourteen. Thompson eventually wrote twenty-nine novels, all but three of which were published as paperback originals. Thompson also wrote two screenplays (for the Stanley Kubrick films “The Killing” and “Paths of Glory”). An outstanding crime writer, the world of his fiction is rife with violence and corruption. In examining the underbelly of human experience and American society in particular, Thompson’s work at its best is both philosophical and experimental. Several of his novels have been filmed by American and French directors, resulting in classic noir including The Killer Inside Me (1952), After Dark My Sweet (1955), and The Grifters (1963).

Even Thompson couldn't make this up
By Amazon Customer
Funny and exhausting. I think I slept a week after I read this. Thompson takes us across America in search of love, success and a few extra bucks.

The underlying tale is how Jim tried to come to grips with his relationship with his father and himself. Luck always intervenes -- sometimes Good and sometimes Bad. As one of the kings of the character novels, Thompson does a great job on himself and his family and friends.

This is a classic, sometimes funny, sometimes uplifting, sometimes sad but always real.

It is also a great history of the America of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Thompson's 1930s
By M. Buzalka
Published in 1954, Roughneck is Part 2 of Jim Thompson's informal autobiography (Part 1 is Bad Boy, published a year earlier). It takes the author's story from the beginning of the Great Depression in 1929 to late 1941, on the eve of America's entry into World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The unifying theme of Roughneck is Thompson's struggle to establish himself as a writer while warding off poverty working a series of odd jobs. In this, Roughneck reminds me of another series of autobiographical books from the same era, Henry Miller's Rosy Cruxifiction trilogy, of which the second part (Plexus) came out a year earlier in France (Miller was banned in the U.S. under obscenity laws).

Both Plexus and Roughneck deal with a writer's struggles to get published. The difference is that Thompson is a lot less verbose and self-obsessed than Milller, who apparently had the time to spin out his story at length (I estimate Plexus is about three times the length of Roughneck).

Thompson, on the other hand, was pumping out books at a furious pace at this point in his career, so he had to be terse. He would produce nine books in 1953 and 1954 alone. Given that pace, clearly autobiographical works like Bad Boy and Roughneck were like taking a breather since Thompson was telling his own story instead of making something up (though there are episodes in both books that make you wonder whether the creative imagination wasn't at least somewhat work).

That's good, since his previous book (published only a few months earlier), The Golden Gizmo, was pretty sloppy, showing that he was running low on gas. Roughneck gave Thompson a chance to catch his breath, if only briefly, so that before 1954 was over, he would crank out The Nothing Man, A Swell Looking Babe and A Hell of a Woman before taking an extended break (his next book, the acclaimed After Dark My Sweet, came out in late 1955).

Everything I've read so far by Thompson (I'm reading him in chronological order) is worth reading and that includes his own life story, embellished or not. So if you find you like The Killer Inside Me or The Grifters or After Dark My Sweet, this could be a good addition to your reading list.

One of the most enjoyable Thompson reads available!
By Johnny Roulette
Roughneck pretty much takes up where Bad Boy left off. It was originally published in 1954. In Roughneck, as was the case with Bad Boy, we get a sort of creatively enhanced autobiography of the king of noir pulp. Follow Thompson through early adulthood, marriage, fatherhood(his description of his own children is hysterical), hobo jungles and more. He describes employment ventures that leave no doubt why he always had more ideas than time to write. He goes through stints as a collector, baker, morgue employee, writer of the labor history for the W.P.A., etc. You will love the story behind the writing and publishing of Thompson's first novel(Now & On Earth). The man was never short on audacity or irreverance. Roughneck is an absolute page-turner. Here's an added bonus for us Thompson fans...this book is absolutely coherent all the way through. There are no lunatic throw away chapters in Roughneck.
If you enjoy the work of Jim Thompson, then you must read this book! As it states on the back of the book: Hard times have never sounded so good!

Want a 4 or 5 on the exam? This book should be your first priority!
By Roohi Shamim
THE COURSE/EXAM:

World History AP, or WHAP, is a college level world history class that tests a student's ability to connect the fundamentals of history under principals such as culture, economy, and political aspects. Students will be required to do conceptual and analytical thinking to link different civilizations with one another. The purpose of this course is not to memorize dates and history, but rather to understand how all civilizations can be linked with TRENDS. You will be required to understand these trends in both the multiple choice and free response portion of the exam, unlike APUSH(AP US History), which requires a great deal of information retention.

At the end of the year, you will take the WHAP exam to determine your knowledge in the class. The exam is composed of 70 multiple choice questions worth 50% of the grade and 3 essays worth 50% of the grade together. The multiple choice questions test aspects of cultures and your knowledge of remembering their differences and similarities, such as How did _______ differ from ________ economically? The free response part has 3 essays: a Document Based Question, a Change over Time Question, and a Compare/Contrast Question. With each essay, you can score from a 0-9, which is based on a rubric I will post below. Getting a 5 on the exam means earning about 70-100% of the maximum allotted points, while a 4 is around 50-70%.

PRINCETON REVIEW:

My world history textbook was an absolute PAIN to read. As a result, I decided to purchase this book to supplement the overall experience for the class. And it helped: significantly.

The book starts off with more info about the WHAP test, such as what to expect and how to answer questions. Its key strategy is Process of Elimination, and it will provide examples to help explain how best to use it. ONE THING THAT HAS CHANGED AS OF 2011 IS THAT THERE IS NO MORE GUESSING PENALTY FOR THE TEST, SO FEEL FREE TO GUESS WITHOUT PENALTY. The huge chunk in the middle is like a secondary textbook, more on this later. The last part of the book contains 2 AP full length tests, in which I suggest you use one for a diagnostic and the second to test your skills.

If a WORLD HISTORY book makes me actually enjoy reading it, its obviously going to stick in my head better. And that is the magic of this book. Don't expect huge lengthy paragraphs on certain chapters; rather, information you will actually need for the test. The book is sprinkled with some comical effects that make it much more easier to understand. Also, there are small information boxes that let you connect places to places, the main focus I mentioned above. I highly recommended knowing these boxes like the back of your hand; you WILL need them for the exam.

The tests are probably the closest to College Board AP style as you will see in a reference book. Rather than asking for straight facts like some books I know, Princeton's uses an analytical basis for its questions just like the AP. Furthermore, there is an answer key at the end with useful explanations about the answers as well. In fact, the Princeton Review's tests are very close, if not HARDER, than the real test, so they are very valuable. I suggest saving them till the 2 weeks before the exam, when you are reviewing this book.

There are no primary resources in the book and no example essays, but I will remedy the 2nd part at least with a link below. Though the book does give guidelines on how to write the essays, it would be nicer to see actual ones along with commentaries. The lack of primary resources isn't that significant, but still noteworthy, as there are often questions in the multiple choice over historical documents.

One question I've been asked several times is if it is a good textbook replacement. Honestly, for the class itself, it's not enough. As stated above, the book will work wonders if you supplement it with a few notes of your own, but this shouldn't be your ONLY resource if you want to make an A in the class. I used online outlines to complement this book, and as a result got the A. What does this book work best as? A refresher. I can promise that nearing the time for the AP, I forgot many important details from the first semester. Thankfully though, this book let me recall names I had forgotten, such as Mamluk and the Hellenistic Era. It's good(actually, amazing) for the AP, as the AP doesn't require that much detail, but your teacher will most likely incorporate details this book won't cover.

This book is truly not the best for super essays, but decent for good(5 or 6/9) essays. When I took the essays for the actual exam, I can just say that I felt a little screwed. A 8 or 9/9 essay requires a LOT more detail than the book provides. For example, one of the 2010 essays was to describe changes over time in African religion systems. The book briefly covered this, but it was only about 1/2 page of info. YOU WILL NEED MORE FOR A BETTER ESSAY(more significantly so as it is 50% of the grade), so please do not rely on this book single-handedly.

The book will do wonders for preparing you for the MC portion of the AP. Compared to other prep books, this will at least ensure you a 3 or 4; the others about a 2 or 3. However, that one point difference to a 4 or 5 will require some action on your part, and I shall help you out by providing a few links below. The reason I am giving this book a 5 is because it was the only review book I used, and it, along with a few external notes, ensured me a 5 on the exam. And if I can get a 5, you can too!

ADVICE AND EXTERNAL LINKS:

If taking this class at school-
*Make sure to follow along what your teacher says. If you don't have a good teacher, I highly suggest look at online presentations.
*Add additional notes to the book that you may find helpful. Now remember. SPECIFIC Dates(you MUST at least know the basic time period)/REALLY MINOR details are not at all necessary for this class, so don't waste time doing so.
*It's important to understand the CHANGES OVER TIME in a society(Such as China) and COMPARING AND CONTRASTING two different societies (such as the Mongols and the Byzantines). I highly recommend creating a visual table for each of the societies involved in a time period on the basis of their customs, foreign policy, etc. etc.
*Don't take the practice exams until the few weeks before the exam. They are extremely valuable. When the time comes, time yourself accordingly and make sure to look at the explanations for why you got something right or wrong. Do you see any patterns in the questions you missed? If so, you may want to review the section in either your textbook or PR book.
*Hate the textbook and don't want to use it?! I know! Me neither! I used online outlines of the textbook, and it, along with this book, made my life a lot easier!
*Look at some of the tips below.

If you are self-studying this course-
*Read the textbook part of the book at least 2 or 3 times. Make sure to read the commentaries, they are break-or-make what you will see on the AP questions.
*Take some textbook quizzes at the website mentioned below (they are pretty close to AP level). Review the questions you got wrong and understand why you got them wrong.
*Take one practice test, and see how you do. Analyze the ones you got wrong. See any patterns? Review that chapter again in the book. If you guessed on any question, put a mark on it, so that your patterns aren't flawed. Repeat for Practice Test II.
*As you don't have a teacher to guide you on how to write the essays, I suggest this course of action. First, print out the grading rubric for all 3 essays so that you know how points are given and what you need to put on the essay. ENGLISH GRAMMAR IS NOT IMPORTANT(please do write it in English though!) and neither is spelling; don't waste precious time on that. Take a look at some of the free response questions at the website below, and practice them. Do you see any prompt that might be tricky for you? If you see many of these, you need another information supplement. Find some outlines online and review them. If you only have trouble with a few, review what your PR says.
*Start early, not the week before the exam, to ensure a 4 or 5.

General Advice for Exam-
*Don't be scared to BS(for the lack of a better word..). Essay graders can't penalize inaccuracy, so if you have NO IDEA what your essay is talking about, make it along rather than leaving it blank. Of course, use common sense please. Drawing a superman logo doesn't count as an essay, and neither does THIS IS SPARTAAAA.
*FEEL FREE TO GUESS ON QUESTIONS YOU DON'T KNOW. THE GUESSING PENALTY HAS BEEN REMOVED STARTING THIS YEAR.
*Bring a watch with you on test day to maintain a solid amount of time for each essay- around 40 minutes for each one.

LINKS: Please remove the spaces in the links

1st Link- All of the released Free Response Questions from previous exams. If you look to the right of them, you will see SAMPLES AND COMMENTARY, in which you can actually view EXAMPLE essays to those prompts along with the score they received, and why they received it. This is just as important as this book, so PLEASE do not ignore these. On the same link you can also view 30 ACTUAL multiple choice questions along with their answers. Also- for each year there is a SCORING GUIDELINE which you can use to grade your essays based on the 9 point system.

Best Review Book! Will Definitely Help Your Score
By daydreamer
After looking at several different brands of review books for this past year when I took AP World History, I decided on this one. It was more concise than other review books (more big picture, some detail but not as much) and it was recommended by both my teacher and other students. I like it because it focused on the big ideas instead of tiny little details. This was so helpful because if you only know lots of small details, they may not even be on the test. If you understand the big picture that connects all those details, you'll do a lot better because it will help you on the essay section (which I was most scared about) and help you figure out detail-oriented multiple choice questions.

I bought the 2011 Edition of this book, and I'm sure the 2012 one is only better. The author has a sense of humor and explains in normal, everyday talk to simplify what the textbook says. The practice tests are very helpful because they're harder than the actual exam was, so if you can work through them you'll be really prepared for the exam.

I got a 5 on the AP world exam, and I know I would not have been able to do it without this book. I learned a lot in class, but this book helped pull it all together. I only wish I had bought it earlier because I think it would have been loads of help to prepare me for each unit test throughout the year (there are 5 units) as well as the actual exam.

If you're taking AP world, GET THIS BOOK! you won't be sorry!

The right prep book for the AP exam :)
By P. George
If you're in AP World History, or self-studying, this is the book to get for the AP exam.

This past year I took my first AP [sophomore] and was extremely nervous for the exam. My teacher had us highlight and annotate the Barrons book for world history, but I found it really unhelpful. I found Barron's full of unnecessary details that distracted me and made it really difficult for me to concentrate on the vital points that I needed to know. The practice questions at the end of each chapter were too easy of a review.

Scared of getting a 2, I went on amazon to see if any other review book for the test had gotten high ratings. That's when I found Princeton Review's book. Luckily my local library had this book available so I decided to get it quickly.

To be honest, I didn't really read the intro and strategies part in depth as my teacher had done a nice job in telling us how to write the three types of essays. Plus all of our tests this year were AP Multiple Choice style.

So i skipped to the review section which was a decent size. I found it to be organized in chapters; each pertaining to one chunky time period of world history. After reading and taking good notes on the first chapter, I knew this was the right book. I was able to concentrate and really understand the material, and the book gave me several examples of connections I should make. I managed to go through the entire review section in about a month, and the notes that I took served as good reinforcement material.

The author of this book has a style that is understandable, though there are a few corny jokes in between [this actually helps you remember the material!]

One downside to this book is that there are no practice review questions after each chapter of the review [a prime reason why I took notes...and I would suggest the same]

Come AP exam time, I wasn't completely confident [who is?] but I felt much better than before. So in that sense, this book was a success. The exam was decent as well, and although I haven't gotten my scores back yet, I think I passed with a 3 or above!

* I must note that the practice tests in this book were SO off. In fact, I don't think any review book has realistic practice tests so I would suggest purchasing offical Collegeboard tests which are available on their online store.

So after a lengthy review which I hope some of you actually read, I strongly suggest this book if you are preparing for the AP World History exam and need a review guide. I haven't gotten my score back like I said, but I will be glad to update this review with my grade when I do get it :) Just getting this book alone will not help you. But if you are motivated to do well and actually go through the review carefully [and like I strongly suggest, take notes] then you will be in good shape come May !

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys! I am back to edit this review as I promised. I got my score report from Collegeboard today and I was extremely pleased. Turns out I got a 5 on the World History exam!!! This goes to show that this is the right book to use. Good luck!

Inconsistant answers
By Bernkastel
I bought this for my son to have some extra practices. But the answers for the practice tests are full of errors (providing wrong answer choices). The detailed answer explanation sections provide answers that are different from the summarized answers. That makes it very difficult for us to grade the practice tests to see where he is at. It takes a tremendous effort to examine the problems and come up with our own answers to be able to grade.

Total disappointment...
By Ali
This book claims that is has "proven techniques for a higher score", such claim is completely preposterous in my opinion...

The answer sheet is contradictory to the detailed explanations, which can only mean one thing: this book hadn't been checked for errors, and therefore it is full of them...

I am shocked that such a renowned company would do the blatant mistake of not checking for errors correctly, I ended up being confused and with a much lower self-esteem due to the fact that I could tell if my answers are right or wrong....

The verdict: If you want a 1000 page collection of errors, go ahead and waste your money.

Incorrect answer sheet for grading
By D. Erb
Normally Princeton Review guides are our go to books for exam reviews. However, they clearly rushed this without enough editing. As a previous reviewer has already stated, the summary answer sheets have many mistakes on them. The answers in the detailed explanation portion is correct, so one has to compare the summary answer sheet to the detail portion first, then go back to grading the SAT practice test. Sloppy and inconvenient, but not impossible to work around.

The Amen Corner: A Play, by James Baldwin

Only a boy preacher who had grown up to become one of America's most eminent writers could have produced a play like The Amen Corner. For to his first work for the theater James Baldwin brought all the fervor and majestic rhetoric of the storefront churches of his childhood along with an unwavering awareness of the price those churches exacted from their worshipers.

For years Sister Margaret Alexander has moved her Harlem congregation with a mixture of personal charisma and ferocious piety.  But when Margaret's estranged husband, a scapegrace jazz musician, comes home to die, she is in danger of losing both her standing in the church and the son she has tried to keep on the godly path.

The Amen Corner is a play about faith and family, about the gulf between black men and black women and black fathers and black sons. It is a scalding, uplifting, sorrowful and exultant masterpiece of the modern American theater.

For Nina, Ray, Miles, Bird and Billie
By Aco
What begins as a family drama about a determined pastor and single mother, whose church, congregation and son are her whole life evolves into an amazing and painful story of love, reconciliation and hypocrisy.
Margaret Alexander is the without-a-doubt leader of her parish, her colleagues, the elders of the church are her agreeable assistants, with the truth of Christ her driving force. But a past that proves more human and relevent than the elders can recognize exposes her as less than pure, and the hypocrisy of spiritual judgement rears its ugly head.
I found the beginning of the play slow, dry and ordinary. Though after reading the notes from Baldwin which open the edition I had I was awoken to the depth of the story, and ultimately was captivated by the honesty and beauty of the play. I pulled this from the library shelf having known about Baldwin but never read him. I now return it to the library with some understanding of the quality of writer and person he was, and look forward to reading his other work.

Amen Corner Critical Review
By Ryan Dale
The main characters are Sister Boxer, Brother Boxer, Sister Jackson, Sister Moore, Odessa, Margaret, Luke, and David. What I really liked about the play was the dialect. The wording really did fit in very good. It was also a very down to earth play. Some of the problems that the main characters faced were every day problems, for instance, David (Margaret's boy) came home drunk when he was so into church (at least that is what his mom thought), and Margaret is a holy person and her husband is a very non believer of the such. Luke was just a person who simply did what made him feel comfortable. All in all, it was a good play and it kept my attention at all times. there were a few things that I didn't like but I will just keep my personal opinions to myself.

For the Time Being, by Annie Dillard

National Bestseller

"Beautifully written and delightfully strange--. As earthy as it is sublime, For the Time Being is, in the truest sense, an eye- opener."--Daily News

From Annie Dillard, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and one of the most compelling writers of our time, comes For the Time Being, her most profound narrative to date. With her keen eye, penchant for paradox, and yearning for truth, Dillard renews our ability to discover wonder in life's smallest--and often darkest--corners.

Why do we exist? Where did we come from? How can one person matter? Dillard searches for answers in a powerful array of images: pictures of bird-headed dwarfs in the standard reference of human birth defects; ten thousand terra-cotta figures fashioned for a Chinese emperor in place of the human court that might have followed him into death; the paleontologist and theologian Teilhard de Chardin crossing the Gobi Desert; the dizzying variety of clouds. Vivid, eloquent, haunting, For the Time Being evokes no less than the terrifying grandeur of all that remains tantalizingly and troublingly beyond our understanding.

"Stimulating, humbling, original--. [Dillard] illuminate[s] the human perspective of the world, past, present and future, and the individual's relatively inconsequential but ever so unique place in it."--Rocky Mountain News

Amazon.com Review
Over the last three decades, Annie Dillard has written about an uncommon number of things--predators and prose, astronomy and evolution, the miraculous survival of mangroves. Yet the sheer range of her interests can be deceptive. Whatever the subject, Dillard is always (as she wrote in Living by Fiction) practicing unlicensed metaphysics in a teacup, always asking the fundamental questions about life and death. And this epistemological interrogation continues in For the Time Being. Here Dillard alternates accounts of her own travels to China and Israel with ruminations on sand, clouds, obstetrics, and Hasidic thought. She also records the wanderings of paleontologist and spade-wielding spiritualist Teilhard de Chardin, whose itinerary (geographical and philosophical) has certain similarities to her own. But as she ties together these disparate threads with truly Emersonian eloquence, it becomes clear that God's presence--or absence--is at the heart of her book.

There are, of course, facts aplenty here: the author is among our keenest living observers of the natural world (check out her soft-core account of two snails mating in chapter 7). But all roads lead Dillard back to God, who seems to be practicing a divine variant of benign neglect: God is no more cogitating which among us he plans to be born as bird-headed dwarfs or elephant men--or to kill by AIDS or kidney failure, heart disease, childhood leukemia, or sudden infant death syndrome--than he is pitching lightning bolts at pedestrians, triggering rock slides, or setting fires. The very least unlikely things for which God might be responsible are what insurers call "acts of God." Natural calamity is an old fascination of the author's, going clear back to Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and Holy the Firm. Here it allows her to make her strongest argument yet on behalf of the Almighty's laissez-faire policy--while suggesting that His immanence in fact depends on our belief.

Yet even in her earnest pursuit of holiness, Dillard tends to hit the occasional speed bump. At one point she throws up her hands in exasperation and declares: "I don't know beans about God." This is hardly the stuff of an airtight theological argument, is it? But happily, Dillard possesses the same quality she ascribes to Teilhard, "a sort of anaerobic capacity to batten and thrive on paradox." So her contradictions are worth more to the reader than her consistencies. They enrich her narrative, yanking her back from the precipice of easy (or even moderately easy) belief. And Dillard's penchant for paradox ensures that For the Time Being--which aims, after all, to encompass God and all his works--always operates on a human, heartbreaking scale. --James Marcus

From Publishers Weekly
Writing as if on the edge of a precipice, staring over into the abyss, Dillard offers a risk-taking, inspiring meditation on life, death, birth, God, evil, eternity, the nuclear age and the human predicament. This unconventional mosaic, portions of which were first published in different form in Raritan, Harper's, etc., interweaves several disparate topics: the travels of French paleontologist and Jesuit priest Teilhard de Chardin in China and Mongolia, where his team in 1928 discovered the world's first fossil evidence of pre-Neanderthal humans; the life and teachings of the Baal Shem Tov, the 18th-century Ukrainian Jewish mystic who founded modern Hasidism; a natural history of sand?an epic drama of rocks, glaciers, lichen, rivers?and of individual clouds as witnessed by painters, poets, naturalists, scientists and laypeople. Rounding out this fugue are Dillard's visits to an obstetrical ward to watch healthy newborns emerge; her survey of tragic, horrific human birth defects; random encounters with strangers; her trips to Israel, where she visited Jesus' birthplace, and to China, where, at the tomb of the first Chinese emperor, Qin?mass murderer, burner of books, Mao's idol?she inspected the terra-cotta army of life-size soldiers who guard Qin in the afterlife. Dillard's unifying theme is the congruence of thought she detects in Teilhard, Kabbalists and Gnostics: each impels us to transform, build, complete and grant divinity to the world. Her cosmic perspective can seem like posturing at times, yet it succeeds admirably in forcing us to confront our denial of death, of the world's suffering, of the interconnectedness of all people. Her razor-sharp lyricism hones this mind-expanding existential scrapbook, which is imbued with the same spiritual yearning, moral urgency and reverence for nature that has informed nearly all of her nonfiction since the 1972 Pulitzer Prize-winning Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. 60,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
Dillard, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Pilgrim at Tinker Creek in 1972, has written another splendid meditative and spiritual book. Reflecting on places (from the Wailing Wall to the Great Wall), people (from mass murderers to martyrs of various faiths), and events (from the birth of severely deformed babies to attempts at delaying death), Dillard shares doubts, hopes, and insights that cut across religious boundaries and plumb human perplexities. She leads the reader into deeper questions, considerations of ultimate mystery, and a sense of the holy in the midst of the profane and even the terrible. Suitable for those of various religious traditions as well as unaffiliated seekers and highly recommended for all libraries.ACarolyn M. Craft, Longwood Coll., Farmville, VA

Broad and deep, but don't expect Dillard to do all the work!
By Meredith K. Askey
This is my first Dillard book, after a failed attempt to read "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" at age 16. I am now 23; I have a very different worldview than I did at 16, and although I am still relatively young and inexperienced, and make no claims to be more intelligent or intellectually gifted than other reviewers, I must take issue with the two reviewers below who gave only one star. I love this book, and I believe two of my fellow reviewers have missed some important points. One Robert Michael accuses Dillard of providing "no analysis" of her "only one very general theme"; I say, he was expecting Dillard to do all the work for him, but her goal was to relate her musings and leave the detailed analysis to the reader. I find this a very effective and gratifying method: Dillard trusts her readers to come to their own conclusions, which may or may not match her conclusions from the thought trails she is following. Her observations are profound, unique, beautiful, and moving, and even more so when I let them take my mind on its own thoughtful journey.
Another reviewer, Hortensia "massageprop," accuses Dillard of "[assuming] that Jews and Christians have all the answers to fundamental questions about existence," but I am POSITIVE that Dillard's point is exactly the opposite: she finds little meaning in either, or in any organized religion, and is wondering how people have fooled themselves into finding so much meaning in these belief systems for so long, shutting themselves off from other modes of thought. She acknowledges that it is possible to find some meaning in religion, but no more meaning than in any other belief systems including nature worship, or atheistic or agnostic philosophy; further, she shows us that although it is impossible to ever completely satisfy our thirst for fulfillment and meaning, we would be shortchanging ourselves if we limited ourselves to only one belief system - they all deserve attention and exploration because each has unique gifts. All of Dillard's musings on religion seem to me filled with spirituality at a first glance of their thin surfaces, but are really meant to emphasize the emptiness beneath the façade of religious tradition and ritual. Each of these reviewers needs to take a second look at this book, and expect to do more work and listen a bit harder: Dillard's style is subtlety, and the extra work she requires from her reader leads to a much richer and more deeply meaningful reading experience.

a poetic excursion into philosophical theology
By Wendy C. Turgeon
I teach philosophy but respect the power of poetry and the story to provoke philosophical wonderment. Dillard's seemingly disconnected vignettes ask us to weave together our own experiences of individuality and generality and contemplate the paradox of evil and God. I agree with many other reviewers that this takes time to read and, most importantly, to reflect upon. It is a hybrid of many literary styles and as such, annoys or confuses some readers. We are a culture steeped in action and accumulation, not in reflection, meditation. Dillard offers us a vehicle by which to plummet our own beliefs, dogmas and souls.

The Mystery
By Oddsfish
For the Time Being is one of my favorite books. Annie Dillard, as always, is taking on the Big questions. She's asking the questions that we all have to ask (whether we realize it or not), and she does so in the most honest, most innovative, and most insightful ways possible.
In For the Time Being, Dillard is exploring the problem of evil. She discusses such horrors as birth defects, torture, and mass murders, and she cries out to God, "What's with all the bird-headed dwarfs!" She's referring to a debilitating birth defect. She's asking how does God allow such atrocities? Is there a God if this type of world exists?
Dillard reviews the traditional arguments about the problem of evil. Her conclusion: "I don't know beans about God." She quotes Augustine, "We're talking about God. What wonder is it you do not understand? If you do understand, then it is not God." But though she doesn't understand God, she still does decide to live in a universe for love. Love (=God) is still worth living for, and that's her message, I think. Delve into the mystery that is God and that is love.
I can't do justice to this book. It is one of those that I love a bit too much. Just read it. It's an experience like no other.

The Ghost (Danielle Steel), by Danielle Steel

With a wife he loves and an exciting London-based career, architect Charles Waterston's life seems in perfect balance. Nothing in his comfortable existence prepares him for the sudden end to his ten-year marriage—or his unwanted transfer to his firm's New York office. With nothing left to lose, Charlie takes a leave of absence from his job to drive through New England, hoping to make peace with himself.

Christmas is approaching when Charlie leaves New York, heading to Vermont to ski. But a sudden, blinding snowstorm strands him in a small Massachusetts town. There, as if by chance, Charlie meets an elderly widow who offers to rent him her most precious possession: a remote, exquisite lakeside chateau. Hidden deep in the woods, it once belonged to a woman who lived and died there two centuries before. Her name was Sarah Ferguson. And from the moment Charlie sets foot inside the chateau's graceful depths, he feels her presence, and longs to know more about the life she led.

It is Christmas Eve when Charlie first glimpses her, a beautiful young woman with jet black hair. He thinks it is a neighbor playing a joke on him, until he finds her diaries hidden away in an old trunk. As he begins to turn the brittle, dusty pages, Sarah Ferguson comes alive. Intrigued and unafraid, Charlie immerses himself in the diaries, eager to learn more about the woman for whom the house was built. Sarah's first entry is dated 1789, the year she arrived in America. Without self-pity or sentiment, she writes of her harrowing journey from her native England, having fled the brutality of her aristocratic husband. Settling in Massachusetts, Sarah finds an unfamiliar land seething with the turbulence of the Indian wars. Determined to start a new life in the vast new world, Sarah finds freedom—and danger—as she builds her home in the wilderness and meets a man who will transform her life. His name is François de Pellerin, a French nobleman adopted by Indians and drawn into the battle for the growing nation. Their fateful union is a testament to a love so powerful it reaches across the centuries. And for Charlie Waterston, caught between Sarah's world and his own, their story is a gift—one that gives him the courage to let go of his past, and the freedom to grasp a future that is right before his eyes.

Amazon.com Review
Architect Charles Waterston has a job he loves, a charming and beautiful wife, and an idyllic life in London. But when everything comes crashing down around him--his wife leaving him for another man and his sudden transfer back to the New York home office--Charles takes a well-deserved ski vacation in Vermont. When an unexpected snowstorm strands Charles in a small town, he takes refuge in a small bed-and-breakfast. The proprietor, an elderly widow, also owns a family home in the woods, which Charles decides to rent. Soon after moving in, Charles senses a ghostly presence. While investigating in the attic one day, Charles discovers the diary of Sarah Ferguson, who left her abusive husband in England for a better life in the New World. Charles soon finds himself drawn to Sarah, and he even visits the local historical society in an attempt to learn more about her. There he meets lovely, timid Francesca Vironnet, the historical society curator and librarian, who has fled France with her young daughter. Through Sarah's journals and Francesca's kindness, Charles is able to heal his heart and learn to love again. Complete with Steel's trademark poignancy but minus the glitz and glamour so evident in many of her novels, The Ghost is an outstanding read. --Maudeen Wachsmith

From Library Journal
It's pure Steel (which is to say, it will soon be pure gold): On Christmas Eve, a lawyer whose life is a shambles encounters the ghost of a beautiful young woman in the lakeside mansion he has rented.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
In her 41st novel (Special Delivery, p. 751, etc.), Steel weaves touches of the paranormal into a historical romance. Charlie Waterston's marriage is kaput. His perfect wife of ten years suddenly tells him that their life has been empty and that she wants a divorce. In shock, Charlie--an American architect working in London--returns to the States and takes a six-month sabbatical to recover. Out on the road on a snowy night just before Christmas, he takes shelter at a bed and breakfast in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. He and the owner (one of Steel's benevolent older women) really hit it off. She then offers to rent him a house bequeathed to her by her grandmother: a perfect small chateau on a nearby lake built in 1790 for Sarah Ferguson, the Countess of Balfour, by her lover Fran‡ois de Pellerin, a virile French count who spent much of his time on the frontier with Indians. Sarah, who had been badly abused by her husband, and had given birth to several dead babies, ran away to America to make a new life. Charlie begins to read her journals, and one night, entering his bedroom, he believes that he sees her ghost. Steel parallels chapters about Sarah's ordeal with the Earl of Balfour and her love affair with Pellerin, with chapters about Charlie's romance with Francesca Vironnet, a modern-day historian emotionally damaged by a bad marriage. Charlie finds Sarah's journals to have a hypnotic rhythm and a story so captivating that ``he wanted to sit in one spot until he finished all of them''--a description of a style that sounds a lot like Steel's, or at least what she intends. No amount of spellbinding rhythm can make up for an overlong romance. Despite the usual Steelian menu of love, pain, and compassion, most fans will figure out the ending long before they get to it--and could probably supply the cadences as well. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Excellent book! Couldn't put it down
By nan
Excellent book! Couldn't put it down. Some books she repeats things over and over again about a character or situation, like we didn't get it the first time. Case in point, Prodigal Son. How many times does she have to say how much the parent thought of one son and how much the brothers hated each other? Anyway, this was an excellent book, right to the point.

A WONDERFUL BOOK!
By Marcia Wegmann
I loved this book; never did it not keep my interest! The plot is excellent, and the characters are well developed. This is one of Danielle Steel's best in my opinion; did not want it to end!

Best thing she's written in 5 years.
By A Customer
I've been reading Danielle Steel for 11 years now, reading everything in print. The last 5 years worth have been somewhat disappointing. I felt compelled to read The Ghost and couldn't put it down once I started! I didn't want the story to end. I loved Charlie, I found him to be a sweet man who just got dumped on. Gladys was his saving grace, by encouraging him to stay and loaning him her treasured chateau. This is the first book in many years that I felt the characters were feasible as real people. I've been trying to read another one of her books this week and have no desire to pick it up after having read 50 pages. The Ghost I will pick up, again and again.

Clever, methodical approach to MCAT prep
By Lucy Cat
This is a new, first edition MCAT preparation workbook. The primary aim of the book is to introduce a methodical, step-by-step approach to the MCAT which can truthfully be applied to any standardized test.

Roughly the first half of this book teaches you how to effectively take practice tests. It first directs you to take a practice test available on the Princeton Review website. Then, it demonstrates how to correct your test and hone in on the problems you missed by using their rating system.

The second half of the book is divided topically as follows: general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and biology. Within each chapter, there is a brief reproduction of the list of concepts which will be tested on the MCAT (similar to the list provided by the AAMC.) Then, it provides about 50 questions per subject area to practice with (about 10 passages and several stand alone questions per subject.)

All-in-all, this workbook provides a unique approach to test taking. For me, it's just a little bit gimmicky and the process a little time consuming. I'm not sure that I need a cumbersome rating system to denote the difficulty level of questions I missed. However, I might use their approach and simplify it a bit for my own use. In either case, for the price, it's a good source of practice questions and tips. If you've already reviewed concepts from each subject and are ready to try additional practice questions, take a look at this book. I would consider it a solid resource.

Buy this book if you want
By Matthew
I purchased this book with the hopes of polishing my exam taking techniques after ensuring that I had a firm grasp of the material covered on the MCAT. I had two major issues with this book:

First, I found that the practice questions and exams involving calculations were too precise. Questions found in the book relied on the use of calculators, which are not allowed on the exam. The questions were not asking about the relationship of variables on the exam, but instead would ask for certain values with high precision, not allowing for mental math.

Another issue I had with this exam was that the advanced strategies offered for the verbal reasoning section are gimmicky and will only waste your time. I would not suggest trusting this book's strategies for the verbal reasoning section of the exam. If you really want to hone your strategies on the Verbal Reasoning section, turn to Exam Krackers. The practice questions were also dissimilar to the stems used on the actual AAMC verbal reasoning, making for less than effective practice questions.

I purchased this book knowing that it was going to ask questions that were harder than ones found on an actual AAMC practice exam. I was disappointed with this book because Princeton Review's way of making the questions harder was to use questions that are beyond the scope of the MCAT and make for less effective study material.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
By Sarah
Content was nice at the begging but actual test have many major typos which make it difficult to take tests since sometimes answer choices are exactly the same. Furthermore, the online material sucks. I took a practice test about 5 hrs and then it decided that I couldn't save it and the only option was for the company to reset it so that I had to take it again. The support was super cheapo too. They had to ask me for my password to verify that the test was frozen! SERIOUSLY this is embarrassing Princeton.

Heartwarming insight as rich in poetry as it is in history.
By Christian Hunter
I, like so many others, was saddened by the death of Ronald Reagan just a handful of days ago. Innundated by coverage as we have been lately, one strip of video had a particularly strong affect on me: it was the video of Nancy Reagan stroking the flag that lay over her late husbands coffin. Her hands moved back and forth over it almost as if she were trying to pat out wrinkles from a perfectly pressed flag; and she was speaking to her husband, moving her mouth uttering words unaudible to the public.
My eyes welled instantaneously.
I immediately remembered why that scene affected me as it did. I remembered reading the letters written by Ronald, saved by Nancy, organized and published in this wonderfully interesting and telling book. I remembered how deeply in love the two were with each other, and how utterly devastating it must be for her to lose such a great husband...such a great friend.
If my memory serves me correctly, Reagan held some high position in the acting biz (perhaps it was the Screen Actors Guild), and was introduced to Nancy by a mutual friend (she wanted to be an actress, and I think had done some work...it was some time ago that I read this, so please forgive any inaccuracies), anyway, they hit it off immediately, as is so often the case in relationships of great quality. Almost immediately (like a modern day relationship might start trading e-mails) they began to trade letters. She saved them all, and published them chronologically in this book.
He soon after took a job with GE as a corporate spokesperson and was shuttled around the country to speak on the company's behalf (despite his great fear of flying). It was during his time on the road that he really grew comfortable trusting Nancy with his innermost thoughts. And private they are! She was a friend, a lover, a mother (of both him and their children), priest, and parishioner.
I was struck by the eloquence in Reagan's writing. His often labeled "The Great Communicator", well, that holds true not just in his ability to give great speaches, he's an equally adept writer. Some of his letters are so tender, passionate, and well composed that it reads more like poetry than a simple letter.
I recommend this book to any who would like a deeper, more intimate understanding of who R. Reagan was when the lights were off, and cameras were stowed.

MORE THAN HISTORY, MORE THAN LOVE, MORE THAN ROMANCE
By ZAZA SIAMASHVILI
This book is not only for those who seek words to express their love to his/her dear person. Nor this is for the historians to check some facts about the couple. The book is for every generation and most especially for the future generation who have become very indifferent to real love and affection. You will find Mrs. Ronald Reagan's comments in between the President's letters. I read the book now for several times and everytime I get tired and bored, I go to this book and the other one - "Reagan: In His Own Hand." I truly suggest to get these two books and you will have a wonderful set. The First Couple are shown here at full length - how they advocated the principles of the genuine family and American ideals. Do not hesitate - go and get this book!!!!! I also would recommend some video titles "Reagan" and "Tribute to Ronald Reagan." If your budget allows you, get "RONALD REAGAN, A GREAT COMMUNICATOR" as well!!! You will have a wonderful present for the 21st century American generation. They should know all about the Man, the Leader, the President and the Lifeguard who saved the lives of billions. So sad that many liberals take his merits and efforts and the results of them for granted, but so great that He is still so well-remembered around the world as we are in debt before Him. God Bless Mr. and Mrs.Ronald Reagan and God Bless the United States of America, the Proud Nation!

Happy Ever After
By John Barry Kenyon
You're only going to read this book if you have a real affection for Ronnie and Nancy. If you hate 'em, or if love letters make you reach for a stiff drink, don't bother. The remarkably personal letters, written over a 40 year period, help set the historical record straight. Nancy was undoubtedly the secret of Ronnie's success in life and his pillar of strength during his presidency in the 1980s. Sincerity oozes from each and every one of them. Perhaps the most moving section is the narrative of the 1990s and the sensitivity of the Alzheimer's issue. After all, Ronnie is the most famous guy in history to have the degenerative disease. His family's suffering has made us all much more aware of the medical dimension. If you are sentimental, the final two pictures showing Ronnie in 1998 and 2000, will bring a tear to your eye.
