This book was a great resource for mastering the GMAT. It provides shortcuts and tricks for getting to the right answer in the short amount of time available per question. I used this book as a resource while taking a prep course. The combination of written guidance and face to face tutoring helped me succeed.

It's okay, its a good price but the description didnt talk about the book being mostly over physics. i would buy this book if i needed more help on the physics section.

Good for OAT Physics Review

Bought this book after reading the previous comment which stated that this book is mostly Physics review (it also does say in the description that there is a comprehensive review on Physics and strategies for the other sections). The book suggests purchasing the Cracking the DAT book for a thorough review on Bio, Chem and Organic Chem - which makes sense because the DAT and OAT are the same in those categories, as well as the Reading Comp and Math. So the OAT really differs in the Physics part, which is why this book concentrates so heavily on that section. If you want a study guide for all sections of the OAT, I recommend purchasing both Cracking the OAT and Cracking the DAT; for ~$25 a book, you can't beat it. I also took the Kaplan review class (for both DAT and OAT - which is mostly the same as well), but found the Physics review to be lacking - prompting me to purchase this book.

What Shoddy Workmanship

I am very disappointed with the book and included online support. The book is pretty good. I am glad I read a review that clarified that it is 90% a physics review and 10% everything else (but I needed that, and the Physics review is quite good and clear).

The online stuff is what I am most disappointed with. It took me about a week to finally figure out how to register my book and access the online stuff. Then I kept having problems. My password won't work, and the "reset your password" thing doesn't work. The email NEVER comes.
The practice tests are just PDFs, not an online test-taking experience, and they are riddled with typos. And not just minor ones either.
One thing that is nice is the explanations to the practice exams. Each problem has an explanation of how to solve the problem, including equations, etc.

Overall, not impressed with the test prep material from Princeton, especially the online portion.

There are many ways to use this book. Americans have grown so accustomed to presidents asserting and exercising extensive powers in that role that Perret's thesis may prove as surprising as it is accurate. Until "Lincoln's War," Perret (Ulysses S. Grant) argues, there were serious questions as to how far the president's powers to determine military policy extendedâ€"or whether, indeed, they existed at all. The Constitution assigned the great issues, declaring war, raising armed forces, ratifying treaties, to Congress. At the other end of the spectrum the Mexican War had created a precedent of leaving strategy and operations to the professionals, particularly Gen. Winfield Scott. Perret argues convincingly that Scott's initial plan against the Confederacy, far from calling for its gradual economic strangulation, provided for replicating his triumph in Mexico by combining a holding action in the east and a decisive thrust down the Mississippi, designed to cut the Confederacy in half by the spring of 1862. Lincoln saw even that delay as unacceptable. While he did not have an expanded idea of presidential power at the time of his election, the comprehensive threat to national survival posed by the South's secession changed his mind. Perret uses archival and published sources to show how Lincoln, pragmatic in this respect as in so many others, put national survival above military, political and legal restraints. Creating by stages a "war power" nowhere described in the Constitution that made him a virtual dictator, Lincoln at the same time consistently appealed for support and validation to Congress, the court system and public opinion, themselves all significantly divided on how best to proceed. The president worked closely as well with a fractious high command incorporating military professionals, like Grant and Henry Halleck, and amateur "political soldiers," like Ben Butler. Developing increasing sophistication in coordinating battlefield victories with the wider political objectives of restoring and reintegrating the union, Abraham Lincoln won his war and in the process redefined the presidency.

He is seldom praised for his military acumen or even for his choice of subordinates in his role as commander in chief. Perret has written three presidential biographies and four works of military history. Here he provides an interesting and sometimes provocative view of Lincoln that credits him with far greater skills as a commander than is generally realized. Furthermore, Perret asserts that Lincoln redefined forever the role of commander in chief, assuming powers that were previously considered the province of Congress. GEOFFREY PERRET is the award-winning author of Old Soldiers Never Die: The Life of Douglas MacArthur, Ulysses S. Grant: Soldier & President, Eisenhower, and, most recently, Jack: A Life Like No Other, a biography of John F. Kennedy. Perret was educated at Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley and served for three years in the U.S. Army. He has been a consultant on documentaries for PBS, C-Span, ABC, Fox News, and the History Channel, and is also a contributor to American Heritage, Military History Quarterly, Proceedings of the U.S. Naval Institute, North & South, and Civil War Book Review. Enjoyable book

Lincoln's War chronicles the leadership of America's greatest President during its gravest crisis. The author provides an account of how Abraham Lincoln held the Union together and led its military as commander-in-chief.

The book is neatly organized. There is a general progression from before the start of the war until its conclusion, but many-if not all-of the chapters are organized thematically. And these chapters are well written and highly engaging. Many readers and reviewers have complained about some historical inaccuracies concerning some of the details, how major battles and events are given little attention, or that the portrayal of U.S. Grant is all wrong. Perhaps they detractors are correct in those regard, but one has to keep in mind the book's overall focus upon Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief, and in that regard I believe this book succeeds. (Perhaps this book deserves 3.5 stars instead of four, but because the one-star ratings for this book are so undeserved, I'll stand by my four-star rating.)

Since much of Lincoln's time and energy was focused upon the Army of the Potomac and the struggle in the East, much of the book focuses upon that. However, ample attention is also paid to the war as it was fought in the West. A recurring theme (or assertion) throughout the book is that the Union's emphasis upon the East and marching the Army of the Potomac on the Confederate's capitol was misguided, and that more attention should have been paid to the Western front. This point is controversial, but at the very least the author does an adequate job in backing up this notion throughout the book.

The author's portrayal of Lincoln as a man and as a military leader comes across as very sympathetic and positive-quite deserved, in this reviewer's view. The war was a tragedy for the nation, and all of the death and destruction took a heavy, heavy toll on Lincoln. His struggles with intense pain and sadness are remarkable.

There was clearly a political dimension to Lincoln's role as Commander-in-Chief. After reading this book, I am further struck with how absolutely essential the political dimension was in prosecuting the war. Lincoln's political calculations were essential to keeping the borders states from joining the Confederacy and in keeping the voters of the North committed to candidates who supported the Union. One of the surest ways to dissolution would have been for the North to have elected a Democrat who would have sought a truce. Matters were further complicated by Lincoln's perpetual struggles with Union generals. The generalship problems appear to have persisted until near the end of the war.

A few chapters stand out in my mind, which I found personally insightful. One chapter was devoted to Gen. Winfield Scott's contribution to the Union cause while serving as General-in-Chief at the beginning of the war. Another chapter is devoted to the U.S.S. Monitor, and another focuses upon Lincoln's acute interest in military and weapons technology. (For some reason, I find the image of Lincoln wearing his stove-pipe hat and firing rifles rather amusing.)

Perret's Accuracy in LINCOLN'S WAR Is Pathetic

I have been studying Abraham Lincoln for nearly 40 years. I do not know what happened when Perret wrote this book about Lincoln since his books on three other presidents are fair or better, but Perret really "dropped the ball" on this one. A large amount of Perret's information is untrue, and LINCOLN'S WAR has a huge number of inaccuracies throughout it. Just a few examples are his information about the battle of Chancellorsville, the military importance of terrain and geography. He confuses rivers and direction of their flows and gets the specifics of some battles wrong, and then draws conclusions on this inaccurate information and lack of knowledge. He confuses some of the battles and has units in places they were not. Perret claims that Lincoln created his own currency for the Union which is not true. The Legal Tender Act was passed by Congress and Lincoln's participation was just to sign the bill since he was the president then. That act of Congress was constitutionally legal. Perret states that no black troops were raised in Kentucky when records show that 23,700 black troops were soldiers in Kentucky. Perret also writes that Lincoln was obsessed with the capture of the Confederate capitol, Richmond. Although capturing Richmond was one of Lincoln's overall three military strategies, the truth is that for at least a year Lincoln repeatedly told some of his generals that at least hurting or better yet, defeating Lee's army wherever it was engaged by Union military was his (Lincoln's) objective, not capturing Richmond. Perret also misunderstands Lincoln's strategy for emancipating slaves. In conclusion, Perret did shamefully sloppy research, and therefore his conclusions about Lincoln mean nothing since they are based on inaccurate information and the author's lack of knowledge of historical facts and realities during Lincoln's era. James M. McPherson who is considered by some to be America's most eminent Civil War historian, states that he found a minimum of 120 errors in Perret's book, LINCOLN'S WAR. Good writing trumped by Inaccurate History

This is one of those books I wanted to be good, and was sorely disappointed when I read it and found it wasn't anywhere near as good as I hoped it would be. While the writing's good, the history is hopelessly inaccurate. This is one of my rules: if you catch errors, significant ones, in a book of history, then you must wonder if any of the facts that you accept are correct. Some may be: my knowledge of Civil War history is pretty good. But in some instances, I am not familiar with the anecdote Perret recounts, and since his accuracy is in doubt, I can't take anything the author says seriously. This makes the book essentially worthless.

To recount just a few of the errors: (for those who doubt) the Prince de Salm-Salm is identified as an Austrian (how did he get killed in the Franco-*Prussian* War, then?); O.O.Howard commanded the XII Corps (in reality the XI); and John Bell Hood wins the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, only to see his army annhilated at the Battle of Franklin by George Thomas. If you don't see the inaccuracy of the last assertion, get yourself a copy of Battle Cry of Freedom, or something (anything) else on the Civil War.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, and I think Perret needs to look into a new editor.

Very good review of the AP course year. Will for sure help you on the AP test

I just received my AP scores and I got a 4 thanks to this book! It's hard for an exam packed with one full year of chemistry. The main reason why one should buy this book is that it takes an entire course year of chemistry and condenses it into one small book. I've been using Princeton Review to study for my AP tests since I was in freshman year, and I can honestly say that it is my number one recommendation. The AP Chemistry Princeton contains two full practice exam (multiple choice and free response). The questions are also pretty challenging which is good because you want to push your brain. I highly recommend doing these practice exams. In addition, the book is broken down into six big ideas, and after each big idea it contains a small practice exam (with multiple choice and free response) which helps you double check if you understood the information you just read. Not only this, but the book contains many helpful tips about the exam and strategies to perform to ones best ability. I understand how stressful the AP Chemistry exam is, and trying to remember things you learned in the beginning of the semester is very troublesome. These review books are crucial for a good review. I'm not saying that reading this will automatically give you a 5, but if you put the time and effort into the class, and then read the Princeton, I think you can definitely pull a passing score. Good luck to anyone taking the class, I send you my best of luck! I hope you get the book and learned as much as I did from it.

I got a 5!!!!!

I have to say, I was debating whether to purchase Barrons of Princeton review for this AP exam. I heard great reviews on both books and to me, it didn't matter which book I got because they would work the same anyway. I decided on Princeton because my friend used it last year. I have never gotten a Barrons review book, so I really can't compare the two. I just really love this one!

THE CONTENT
I'm sure all of the review books are like this, but I really find it handy that they separated the content by time period. Again, I'm sure all the other books did the same, but it just made it more organized and for me, really easy to understand and remember what I had learned months before. I reviewed with this book 4 weeks before the actual exam. It helped a lot with remembering what I had forgotten. At the end of each section, there is a timeline and the list of vocabulary words. I found it really helpful to go back to the ends of the sections to review those sections without reading the entire chapter! I recommend, as you are reading, to highlight vocab words and make notes in the margins. There's plenty of space to write, so no need for sticky notes! All in all, I found the content to be extremely helpful in terms of remembering and learning, in more detail, the events and facts that occurred in each chapter.

THE PRACTICE TESTS
Okay, there's one thing I need to stress. The practice tests are VERY challenging. To me, at least. It wasn't a problem finishing everything within the time limit. The questions were just very hard to remember. Even at the end when I finished reading the entire book, I had trouble answering the questions. Don't panic like I did! The questions are much more difficult than the actual AP exam which I found very helpful. Some questions were actually really similar to some questions on the exam! Final word: don't be discouraged when you miss 20 questions. It's meant to be hard! It was hard, but beneficial. There is a VERY detailed explanation of each question at the end of the test. I found that to be really handy, especially when reviewing because it helped refresh my memory. I recommend finding more practice tests online since there are only two in the book. I almost forgot! The essay questions were pretty hard too, in my opinion. Again, the essay prompts in the AP exam were MUCH easier than the ones in the book. I actually didn't write the essays from the practice prompts. Don't worry! There is a detailed explanation of what you could write about and what topic you can choose. The explanations are helpful in reviewing as well!

THE STRATEGIES
The strategies in this book are helpful! Things like time management for the multiple choice and essays worked! I followed each step and I had 10 minutes to spare after writing all 3 essays. For the multiple choice, I had 10 extra minutes, but I used all my extra time to check my answers! The advice for essay writing was helpful, but since I was pressured, I forgot to follow the advice and just wrote everything all at once (I think making an outline and rough draft is too time consuming). Finally, strategies are awesome! 10 spare minutes after 3 essays is a lot of time! Remember to practice writing fast before the exam because that helps a lot.

BONUS
Honestly, and I am NOT kidding here. I actually enjoyed reviewing for the exam. I really did chuckle at some of the remarks in the book and I did like the commentary from the authors. This review book is very well written and easy to understand. It's really no nonsense, just read it and take notes! I loved that the vocabulary words are bolded so you know exactly what to focus on when you're reading.

Using just this book and some review my teacher gave me, I earned a 5 on the 2016 AP world history exam. It really wasn't easy throughout the year, and studying was painful too, but it was all worth it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to pass the exam! Good luck, work hard, and never give up!

I would recommend these different books for different types of studying

I bought this book along with the Barron's Review book to assist me in studying for the rather rigorous AP World exam. After successfully completing the course and exam, I would recommend these different books for different types of studying. The Princeton Review is much better used as a review rather than a fact-packed supplemental guide (as I believe Barron's is). Also, this book contains lots of test taking strategies, and how to actually write the 3 types of essays we are required to know how to compose (something I was NOT taught in class!). This portion of the book is much more in depth than the Barron's Review. Overall though, if you're looking for a comprehensive review, go with Barron's; if you just need to refresh major ideas, I highly recommend this one. Either way, these books will help you if you're trying to get a 4 or 5 on the exam!

Count on Success

It's called the "summer brain drain" the 10-11 week period when kids aren't engaged in formal learning. By the time they return to school in August or September, they may have fallen two reading levels behind and forgotten "2 to 2 1/2 months of the math computational skills that they learned during the school year" according to published research.

Public school professionals must expect this because as a parent of elementary-aged children, it is my experience that much of the work done in the first school quarter of the new grade is spent reviewing and relearning the work of the last grade - especially in math. Many school districts have gotten smart about reading and assign summer reading lists and book logs. Based on the research, they would be well advised to require the same thing for math.

In the meantime, there's the Sylvan math workbooks including BASIC MATH SUCCESS to prepare your 2nd grader for next steps. My kids love doing Sylvan worksheets. All the pages in this workbook are colored and color coded which keeps the work visually interesting ("Today, we're going to do the Blue section!"). I have purchased several workbooks for my kids each summer. Sylvan--by far--has more appropriate content and the pages are not crowded. Directions are clearly stated as not to confuse young students. This workbook is a must for every parent that wants to prevent the summer slide.

Awesome for building math foundation

I have compared many math workbooks at the second grade level. This one is outstanding. It presents serious math content in interesting games/drills for all second grade topics, such as addition, subtraction, fraction, measurement, money and time. It strikes a good balance between math concepts and fun learning. My son enjoyed it. When kids have the interest, they become smarter. Practicing math doesn't have to be painful. When my son takes the online Beestar weekly tests, he often ranks high among his peers. I give credits to this book. It helps my son to develop a strong foundation in math.

Straying from the safety net of a bestselling series (The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, etc.), Smith tells 40 traditional African folk tales with his by now signature humor, simplicity and reverence for African culture. With an introductory letter from No. 1 Lady Detective Mma Ramotswe as a preface, he sets the literary stage for a nostalgic stroll down his own personal memory lane. Born and raised in what is now Zimbabwe, Smith began collecting these stories as a child and combines them with several he gleaned from a friend who interviewed natives of Botswana. Many of the stories parallel classic Western tales, from Aesop to Mother Goose. The ubiquitous wolf-in-sheep's-clothing fable becomes a parable about a girl who unwittingly marries a lion. Other stories deal with familiar themes ranging from ingratitude (in "Head Tree," a man cured of a tree growing out of his head does not pay the charm woman her due) to vanity (in "Greater Than Lion," a hare outwits a conceited and boastful lion). However, many are uniquely African, such as the stories that explain why the elephant and hyena live far from people or how baboons became so lazy. These are pithy, engaging tales, as habit-forming as peanuts.

"A glimpse of an African vision"

Those familiar with Precious Ramotswe can easily imagine her listening to the tales from this delightful collection. Relaxing after a day's work as No. 1 Ladies' Detective with a cup of bush tea, her mind might wander back to the stories of her childhood. Those new to McCall Smith's books will find in "The Girl Who Married a Lion" an excellent introduction into the gentle and caring world of Mma Ramotswe and her friends. The same warmth and affection that McCall Smith conveyed through his Botswana series has found expression in this latest book. It is a real treasure.

Folk tales in any culture, told and retold from one generation to the next, have special meaning within and beyond their geographic beginnings. They often combine the best of humanity's wisdoms with the local flair of their original source. Sometimes they are revealing, tongue in cheek irony, usually reflecting on one or the other human weakness or strength. They end with a gentle lesson in morality and local customs. The tales in this collection from one particular region of Africa are no different. As in fables everywhere, animals can speak and/or disguise themselves as humans; good and evil spirits test the resolve of the brave and award the deserving. While we might recognize some themes and characters, such as the hare or the tortoise, in all tales the African context shines through very strongly. We hear about a colourful bird that gives milk to sustain a poor family. In another, "children of wax" shape their restless brother into a bird to help him explore life during the hot sunny day. Or crocodiles that are feeling pity for a young girl too weak to carry the calabashes for the daily water needs of her family.

McCall Smith always finds the right tone, the proper nuances and illuminating details to bring the stories alive within their culture and environment. He has been collecting these tales, told to him over decades while living in Botswana and in what is now Zimbabwe. His sensitive retelling them for us conveys the local context vividly. Adding some detail on a landscape here or on a different local custom there makes his narratives rich reading. Enjoy this heart-warming treasure of a book, share it with your children and friends and explore this glimpse of an African vision. [Friederike Knabe]

An unusual collection of African folktales

Alexander McCall Smith has become a bestselling author for his fictional "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" set in Botswana, Africa. In "The Girl Who Married a Lion," Smith retells several stories he has personally collected or received from friends in his beloved African countries, Botswana and Zimbabwe. To date, most African folklore collections have been scholarly, intended primarily for the armchair or scholarly folklorist, not the general public. In contrast, these tales are not presented with lots of scholarly notes and histories, but as an end unto themselves. I would have enjoyed a little more backstory to the tales, but they are presented with a warmth and respect that is often lacking in more scholarly folklore collections.

For fans of Smith's bestselling series, the tales offer another view of Precious Ramotswe's world, an intriguing journey into its folklore, blantantly exploited by the publisher with the inclusion of an additional introduction to the collection by the fictional Mma Ramotswe. While the Ramotswe introduction is charming, it threatens the validity of the collection as a folklore collection, reminding the reader that this collection hopes to capitalize on that series' success.

Despite, and even because of all of this, the book is a worthwhile read, presenting deceptively simple stories from an often overlooked part of the world. Most of the 40 tales have been published previously (see Smith's "Children of Wax"), but seven of them are unique to this new collection. Whether you read the book because you are a fan of Mma Ramotswe or because you love folklore, you will not be disappointed as you enjoy the stories of tricksters, animals, and even a cannibal or two.

Good lessons, stupid book design

Whoever it was at Sylvan's who decided that printing the answer key on the same page as the problems should be taken out, stripped, and flogged. The choice you have as the parent/educator is to either a) trust that your kid/student isn't cheating off the answer key that's 2 inches to the right of the question they're working on, or b) go to every other page and rip the key out, which is no small task in a 300+ page workbook.

Hey Sylvan, I have no problems with answer keys but please print them in the BACK of the book where they belong. Thanks.

Loving Language

If you are a parent who worries about schools "teaching to the test" than you should supplement your child's learning with a Sylvan education. Besides, what's not to love about a 300-plus page workbook whose tagline is "Activities, exercises, and tips to help catch up, keep up, and get ahead."

Because this is 3-books-in-1 (spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension), this workbook looks intimidating. Tear out the pages you want to cover so your child doesn't feel overwhelmed by the enormous content. Although, catchy section titles like "Verbs, Verbing and Verbed," or "I Spy Long "I"" and "A, E, I, O, Uh?" along with "Phooling Around with "F"" and , "It's Not Easy Being "E"" will put your young scholar at ease.

I loved working this book with my third grader. The English language, with its silent "e" words, homophones, compound words, palindromes, double entendres and onomatopoeia words should be fun to learn and share. This workbook covers the rules (consonants, vowels, apostrophes and root words) while also bringing the quirky, wacky and devilish side of the English language to life. Enjoy!

This book has great activities, great explanations, and is great to learn. The bad part was having the answer key on the same page as activities. I had to cut them out of the workbook.... Took about 40 minutes. It is hard for the student to think of the answer when it is right in front of them.... It would be better if the answer key was in the back.
