Amy and Jordan, by Mark Beyer

For those of you who thought the comic strip was dead by the end of the twentieth century, here are 292 pieces of proof that you were wrong. Mark Beyer was breathing delirious, heartbreaking, otherworldly life into it by means of Amy and Jordan. Obviously, you weren’t reading New York Press.

But I sure was. Voraciously. Back in 1989, when I discovered that Beyer’s strips were appearing regularly in this new “alternative weekly” paper, I quickly became hooked, and a thought seized me: I had to clip and save them–they were exquisite poems of urban despair, dreamy and nightmarish. I was already a fan of Beyer’s talent based on his book Agony (Pantheon, 1988), but these new strips revealed, week by week, a whole new dimension to his work–an ingenious reinvention of panel-design that redefined what a comic strip could be. As with Peanuts, it helps to try and picture these in the context which they first appeared in order to appreciate just how profoundly they emerged from anything else on the newspaper page. Even the “outré” NYP ads and listings which often ran alongside them were hopelessly dull by comparison. One of its most impressive aspects was the way Form served the Content–no matter how eccentric the layout got, it somehow never confused the narrative. And what narrative: it was as if Candide had been transported to the East Village and split in two like an amoeba and holed up in a squat on Avenue C. Along with giant bugs from outer space.

So I did clip and save them, and put them into an envelope, which was then placed in a shoebox with a lot of other envelopes (receipts, receipts!), which was shoved to the back of the closet of my sixth-floor walk-up studio apartment, which I moved out of three years later and in the process I unwittingly threw them all away. Which frankly is just the sort of thing that Amy and Jordan would do. Drat. “Oh well,” I thought, once I’d realized it, “at some point someone will collect and publish them, and I’ll get them back that way.” And that was that.

Fast forward more than ten years, to the spring of 2002. During a panel of cartoonists I was chairing in Philadelphia, a member of the audience asked what Mark was working on and where he was. No one seemed to know. The discussion was transcribed and published in The Comics Journal that summer, and in the fall Mark contacted me with the best possible news: He’d read the panel transcript and wanted to publish again. And the Amy and Jordan strips had never been comprehensively collected. So now, as an editor, I was able to grant my own wish.

Amy and Jordan ran from 1988 through early 1996. After that, Beyer put cartooning aside to pursue other projects. This book signals his return to the realm of comics, which he says he wants to start making again. We can only hope he does. For now, I’m just thankful I finally have my Amy and Jordan collection back. –Chip Kidd, NYC, 10/03

From Publishers Weekly
Generally acknowledged as one of the most important artists in underground comics history, Beyer is also one of the medium's most under-published. His last major book, Agony, was released in the late 1980s, and his other books have been released in small editions by independent publishers. This volume collects his 1988â€"1996 comic strip, Amy and Jordan, previously syndicated in only a handful of free weeklies across America. Amy and Jordan exist in a nightmarish urban landscape, and go from one awful situation to another with a combination of tragedy and laughter. Any good luck that comes their way is immediately negated by a horrible event. In one strip, Jordan learns his "good luck gland is damaged, and only the bad luck gland is working." But Beyer doesn't trivialize the horror of urban life and is never flippant; instead, his tone is accepting and humorous. Amy and Jordan always come back to keep exploring their world, no matter what happens. Beyer's work is universal at its heart, exaggerating the humor, paranoia, depression and exaltation we all feel sometimes. Every strip is unique and reads equally well as a whole composition or individual panels; the panels range from medallions on a patterned page to triangles in a zigzag pattern and everything in between. Each is a concise gem of storytelling and drawing. This work is a major release by one of the masters of the form, and is a must-have for anyone interested in the potential for profound art in the comics medium.

From Booklist
Combine the tribulations of Job with the cartoonlike resilience of Wile E. Coyote, and you've got Amy and Jordan, a hapless but undaunted couple whose urban existence involves a never-ending assault from marauding bands of demons, rampaging kitchen utensils, and roach-infested teddy bears as well as commonplace poverty and violence. Even their ramshackle home is no refuge, for the apartment itself attacks them for being slovenly occupants. Fed up with their jobs and, frequently, one another, they exist in a state of placid depression marked by deadpan equanimity. Beyer's self-taught style is as distinctive as the strip's existential despair. His primitive graphics match the characters' primal concerns with ever-shifting character designs, wildly imaginative compositions, and inventive panel treatments. Cherishing Beyer's unique capacity for juxtaposing the horrific and the mundane, devout fans have eagerly awaited this collection of strips originally published in alternative newspapers more than a decade ago. They will happily echo the malevolent children who subject Amy and Jordan to further torment: "It's so much fun torturing Amy and Jordan." Gordon Flagg

Averting the eyes is important, but just as impossible
By Brenna Collins
A self-taught outsider in the sequential arts realm, Mark Beyer's graphical work has been notorious for appearing in free urban weeklies from the late 1980s to early 1990s. His best known work consists of a surreal, subterranean-inspired comic strip series. Collected for the first time (outside of crumbling newspaper clippings stashed in a shoebox in some dark hiding place), Beyer's quasi-popular "Amy & Jordan" strip has finally made it to store shelves, in black-and-white hardcover format. Indeed, while the tome is a bleak, gothic compilation which almost certainly isn't for everyone, it is (at its nicest) morbidly compelling.

Each strip is a study in urban alienation, with no oasis for Jordan or his sadistically-inclined roommate Amy throughout. The dead-end lives of the two protagonists continue unabated as the outside world invades and attacks them from the inside, page after agonizing page. Dealing with such light-hearted and universal subjects as premature death, prolonged starvation and mortal childhood illness, Beyer pries open every dismal, dry-rotted cask of the imagination, slyly smirking the whole while. The reader becomes a part of the assault, eyes incapable of averting, all the while whimpering, "Please... no more!"

And no two Amy & Jordan strips are alike, thanks to Beyer's unique paneling techniques. Every strip features its own style of frame, as if each panel were a piece of art interdependent of the other, yet isolated from all other strips within the book.

For fans who like their independent comic strips macabre (such as James Kochalka's now defunct Deadbear: Circus Detective) Amy & Jordan is the perfect compliment.

Misery Loves Company
By OAKSHAMAN
Some people find it odd that "Amy and Jordan" is among my all time favorite comic strips. Many people just don't "get" the constant stream of depression, misery, and atrocity. From the start I saw the underlying truth of the situations, which is the basis of any good creation- comic strip or otherwise. This is an examination of the existential absurdity of modern urban life. This is an ode to the constant stream of irritation and suffering in a totally alienated and alienating blighted urban landscape.

Yet, the completely self absorbed characters of Amy and Jordan aren't all that sympathetic. They are as self-absorbed as all the monsters and sociopaths around them. You get the idea that the only reason that terrible things are happening to them are that they haven't had the chance to do it to others first. The constant theme is that life is an ordeal without meaning or purpose. Even children are sadistic monsters that will torture you if they can. It is repeatedly stated that you can trust no one. When supernatural elements such as the angel of death, demons, or ghosts pop up they are also shown to be just extensions of this same theme.

And yet, it seems to me that there is a lesson here. The universe is largely what you make it- or at least limit your perceptions to see it as. If you choose to see suffering as meaningless then it is meaningless. If your concerns are exclusively materialistic and meaningless then that is how the world will in turn react to you. If you are totally wrapped up in your own self-absorbed little ego then the universe will inflict a synchronistic string of disasters on you, both great and small, until that ego is beaten down- and you see behind it all.

I find it significant that the artist states, as himself, in the last strip of the collection that creative ideas are not invented but exist on other planes of existence and that artists merely connect with them and reinterpret them for a new generation. In that case, what is being connected with here is the upper rings of Hell- and Beyer and Dante are showing us the same thing in their own unique way.

As for the critics of the artist's unique drawing style- it is no more highly stylized and consistent than, say, Schulz work on "Peanuts." This book itself has a truly unique design different from any other collection of strips that I am familiar with. My only criticism is that 1) the strips are not in consistent chronological order, 2) there are no page numbers (makes it impossible to suggest an individual strip to anyone,) and there is one duplicate strip.

Makes Dark Look Light

Brilliant! This book is a compelling argument against the use of anti-depressants. I can't think of anyone who compares with Beyer. Feiffer seems like Norman Vincent Peale next to him. The artistry is as bizarre as the writing. Not for weak hearts or minds.

The Island of the Colorblind, by Oliver Sacks

"An explorer of that most wondrous of islands, the human brain," writes D.M. Thomas in The New York Times Book Review, "Oliver Sacks also loves the oceanic kind of islands." Both kinds figure movingly in this book--part travelogue, part autobiography, part medical mystery story--in which Sacks's journeys to a tiny Pacific atoll and the island of Guam become explorations of the meaning of islands, the genesis of disease, the wonders of botany, the nature of deep geological time, and the complexities of being human.

Amazon.com Review
In his books An Anthropologist on Mars and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver Sacks details the lives of patients isolated by neurological disorders, shedding light on our common humanity and the ways in which we perceive the world around us. Now he looks at the effects of physical isolation in The Island of the Colorblind. On this journey, he carried with him the intellectual curiousity, kind understanding, and unique vision he has so consistently demonstrated.

Drawn to the Micronesian island of Pingelap by reports of a community of people born totally colorblind, Dr. Sacks set up a clinic in a one-room dispensary. There he listened to patients describe their colorless world in terms rich with pattern and tone, luminance and shadow. Then, in Guam, he investigated a puzzling neurodegenerative paralysis, making housecalls amid crowing cockerels, cycad jungles, and the remains of a colonial culture. The experience affords Sacks an opportunity to elaborate on such personal passions as botany and history and to explore the meaning of islands, the dissemination of species, the birth of disease, and the nature of deep geologic time.

From Publishers Weekly
Neurologist Sacks, famed for his investigations of unusual medical conditions (The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, etc.), went to Micronesia in 1993 to study firsthand two rare disorders: achromatopsia, or total congenital color blindness, which afflicts more than 5% of the population on the islands of Pingelap and Pohnpei; and lytico-bodig, a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disease common in Guam, causing paralysis, dementia and catatonia. His total immersion in island life makes this luminous, beautifully written report a wondrous voyage of discovery. Most of those born color-blind never learn to read because they can't see the teacher's writing on the board; they can't work outdoors in bright light, and are unable to see fine detail; yet many achromatopes, Sacks found, develop acute compensatory memory skills and curiosity and thus live in a world of heightened reality. On Guam he visited families tragically scarred by lytico-bodig, a disease blamed by some scientists on the natives' ingestion of cycad trees' toxic seeds; other researchers suspect that the cause can be traced to a virus, diet as a whole or genetics. With aplomb, Sacks wears many hats?cultural anthropologist, naturalist, explorer, ethnographer, neuroscientist?as he delves into the islands' volcanic origins, their archeological wonders (e.g., Pohnpei's megalithic ruins, remnants of a monumental civilization), their unique flora and fauna (nocturnal tree-climbing snakes, iridescent ferns, dwarf forests), their bloody colonial history under Spanish and German rule, their still active indigenous myths. As a travel writer, Sacks ranks with Paul Theroux and Bruce Chatwin. As an investigator of the mind's mysteries, he is in a class by himself. Illustrated with drawings, maps. 150,000 first printing; Literary Guild selection; Random House audio.

From School Library Journal
YA. Fans of Sacks's previous publications will be enchanted by the newest work of the famous neurologist. Written as a travelogue/medical adventure, the book is actually an account of two separate observational journeys. The first, to an island in Micronesia called Pingelap, was to observe a community with an extraordinary large number of the population suffering from an inherited colorblindness. The author offers a vivid description of this handicap: extreme sensitivity to light, less than one tenth of normal vision, and a lack of fixation of the eyes resulting in repeated "nystagmic jerks." The second voyage was to Guam to observe the sufferers of lytico-bodig. Victims can have progressive paralysis, Parkinson-like symptoms, or even dementia. The clear way in which the author portrays the human spirit coping with vast disabilities will appeal to YAs interested in medical and science oddities. From night fishing with achromotopes on Pingelap to playing catch with a "frozen" bodig sufferer on Guam, Sacks carries readers along on a wave of interest and opens a fascinating, little-known world. Students who are looking for science, medical, or travelogue literature?or just attention-grabbing reading?will be swept away by The Island of the Colorblind.?Carol DeAngelo, formerly at Fairfax County Public Library, VA

fascinating...the best of Sacks
By Laura Hamilton
I adore the quirkiness of Oliver Sacks. Such a multifaceted individual...neurologist, botanist, world-traveller, musically talented, and a bona-fide eccentric of the best kind. I have read nearly all of his books and this is one of the best.
My biggest fault with Sacks is that he can drone on about minutiae in the middle of a scintillating story and lose the interest of his readers. I love a good detailed medical story, and I don't have ADD or anything, but I skipped through many pages of "An Anthropologist on Mars", in spite of the great stories in that book.
In *this* book he keeps the tale lively and doesn't lapse into stupefying detail. It's full of juicy tidbits from a variety of areas: the history and anthropology of the peoples of the Pacific islands, personal anecdotes of the people he meets, a delightful travelogue, descriptions of beautiful ferns and cycad forests, adventure, mystery...
Main story #1: The genetically color-blind people of a small Pacific island. How did they get to be that way? What is it like to live on a small primitive island in a village of color-blind people?
Main story #2: What caused the majority of the population of Guam in the early part of this century to fall ill with a mysterious Parkinsonian-like disease that in some cases wiped out entire families? Oh, and here's the rub...this disease has now almost disappeared. Could it be the cycads? Or not?

This inspired book speaks to the intellect and the soul.
By knb53
I was transformed and transported by this book. As a physician, I was caught up totally and completely in the medical Sherlock Holmesian "whodunnit" quest for scientific answers. As a human being residing for a time on planet earth, I was immersed in the beauty and the mystery of places that seem almost fairy-like and magical through the keenly observant eyes of Dr. Sacks. As a soul flickering briefly on that continuum of deep time, I felt a profound sense of awe and existential brevity, but also a sense of connectedness and immortality.
Having just finished the book today, I am aware of a sadness within me, a sadness that my journey to the South Pacific with Dr. Sacks has ended. I return to my clinic tomorrow morning to see patients, but my heart for some days to come will be on Pingelap, or Guam, or.......

Good flashcards, but not complete
By sake
I bought these to supplement my "Cracking the GRE" book because it was taking me waaaay too long to write out all of the flashcards for the "hit parade" words in the book. I assumed that since the words in the book are supposedly the most important to learn that they would be included in the flashcards, especially since it is the same publisher. Unfortunately that was not the case and I ended up using 48 out of 50 of the extra cards included in the set to make my own flashcards to make up the difference of the missing "hit parade" words (and this doesn't include the "beyond the hit parade" ones, I haven't even made it that far). So it has saved me some time, but it seems a bit silly to me that these wouldn't be complete.

Also, on the "cracking" DVD, they show you how to set up flashcards to make them the most useful. They say to create a sentence with a clue and to put that clue on the front of the card to help you remember. They also said to include the pronunciation of the word. These flashcards have synonyms, and a sentence along with the definition on the back, but not the other two tips that the folks at Princeton review had said to use when making your own flashcards... again a discrepancy.

Overall, I do think these flashcards are helpful, I just think that Princeton Review should be more consistent across studying materials to make all of our lives easier. Mastering even a small percentage of all the possible GRE words is an arduous task, so anything that makes it even a little bit easier is worth it, I say.

It improved my score
By A.L.M
I recommend this product to anyone preparing to take the GRE. I took the ETS practice test as a baseline before studying and received a score of 152 (490 scaled/56th percentile). When I reviewed the questions that I missed, the problem was that I couldn't understand the question because it all hinged on a word I was unfamiliar with. This is why I decided to buy vocab flash cards.

I purchased this one in addition to the Barron's cards. There are only about 20 vocab words from Barron's that aren't in the Princeton Review cards. This product has far more words; however, it doesn't help with the quantitative section like Barron's does. I didn't see this as a problem, though, since I already have a grasp of those concepts.

As a procrastinator, I waited until five days before my test to begin studying the vocab, which I wouldn't recommend.
How I studied:
1. I went through all 500 and pulled out the ones I already explicitly knew (~100 words)
2. I divided them by letters and designated 8/9 letters per day for the first three days.
3. I read the word, the definition, synonyms, the sentence, and the word again for one letter of the alphabet at a time. If I could think of a hint for remembering the word, I wrote that on the back.
4. I went though that letter and pulled out the ones I remembered and went through the process of reading the card again and again until I remembered all the words for that specific letter.
5. On the fourth day, I went through all 500 again and studied the ones that I had forgotten.
6. On the fifth day, I took the test.

I took my GRE and received a score of 161 (620 scaled/89th percentile). The questions are far easier to answer when you understand what it's asking. I did see about 20 of the words on the test but that is to be expected. Not all of them will appear, but you will be glad to know the ones that do. I was also able to integrate many of them into the writing section.

The only problem I had with these cards was that some words were so obscure that I had to look up pronunciations. It would be nice if this were included on the front of the card just to save time.

I suggest that anyone preparing for the GRE with this product should begin studying months in advance instead of cramming like I did. I took four days of studying for hours when I could have done twenty minutes here or there over months.

These flashcards are amazing!
By D. R. Fowler
When I was looking to buy a set of flashcards, I was very torn between getting the Kaplan version and this version. I have to say that I am absolutely in love with these flashcards! They're visually appealing, while still being basic, provide great definitions as well as sentences and synonyms. It even comes with 50 additional cards to make your own.. genious. I've only had them for 2 days, and I've already learned 50 new words! This has to be the single best GRE-study-aid that I have purchased so far.

Best preparation for international test takers
By John Green
Firstly, I am from South Africa, as such I have never fully experienced the Maths that the SAT Math II tests, and I wrote the subject tests during my final grade 12 exams. I still, however, managed 800 on it, and I thank this book for my score. I enjoy maths, and in terms of my own curriculum, I achieve high grades. When I looked at SAT maths for the first time, I was bewildered and confused.

I purchased this book along with Barron's SAT Math Level 2. I started off learning from Barron's, and I was completely lost. Not enough examples, ambiguous explanations and very short in length. About the only thing it was good for was the practice tests. I was lucky enough to have bought the Princeton Review Cracking The SAT Math 1 & 2 guide, and I can safely say that this is light years ahead of Barron's.

The information presented within the book is fantastic. Before writing the test, I only had a basic understanding of what was being tested, I hardly knew these sections in enough detail to take the test comfortably. The book tackles each section with amazing detail, everything is explained precisely, with plenty of examples to practice on. The notes are direct and comprehensive, and very easy to understand for someone who doesn't experience this level of maths on a daily basis.

I enjoyed that it included Math 1 information, and did not just assume you knew it well enough to move past it, thus helping to set a foundation for Math 2 studying. Even though there are only 2 practice tests for Math 2, each test had 3 sections, the test, answer key and answer explanations. The answer explanations is where I find that this book destroys Barron's. Upon marking your test and finding your score, you can have all your weaknesses and problems explained in detail to you, allowing you to build on your mistakes. I feel it is this holistic view to the practice tests that makes this book the best, in my opinion.

Considering that I started studying only 2 days before I wrote the test, and still got 800, I found that this book worked wonders. If you are an international and not studying the US curriculum I cannot recommend this book enough.

Just the thing for refreshing the maths brain
By tomkennedy
I'm actually an older student who is getting into astronomy and physics, so this very inexpensive text book is a great way to refresh from the basics through to calculus and geometry etc. It's well laid out and easy to follow and has lots of challenging tests at each level of the course. Of course, it is aimed at school kids, but it has much wider appeal as well.

Very good preparation
By Shopping Mama
My daughter just went through this book, and really liked the structure and explanations. It was comprehensive, and the sample tests were very close to the real SAT II (the sample tests where slightly harder than the real SAT II according to her). She just took her SAT II yesterday, and she thinks she did very well because of this book.

The Death of the Banker: The Decline and Fall of the Great Financial Dynasties and the Triumph of the Small Investor (Vintage), by Ron Che

"For anyone interested in the world behind the business-page headlines, this is the book to read." --Publishers Weekly

With the same breadth of vision and narrative élan he brought to his monumental biographies of the great financiers, Ron Chernow examines the forces that made dynasties like the Morgans, the Warburgs, and the Rothschilds the financial arbiters of the early twentieth century and then rendered them virtually obsolete by the century's end.

As he traces the shifting balance of power among investors, borrowers, and bankers, Chernow evokes both the grand theater of capital and the personal dramas of its most fascinating protagonists. Here is Siegmund Warburg, who dropped a client in the heat of a takeover deal because the man wore monogrammed shirt cuffs, as well as the imperious J. P. Morgan, who, when faced with a federal antitrust suit, admonished Theodore Roosevelt to "send your man to my man and they can fix it up."  And here are the men who usurped their power, from the go-getters of the 1920s to the masters of the universe of the 1980s. Glittering with perception and anecdote, The Death of the Banker is at once a panorama of twentieth-century finance and a guide to the new era of giant mutual funds on Wall Street.

"Chernow . . . delivers a sound, accessible account of the forces shaping capital, credit, currency, and securities markets on the eve of a new millennium. "

Amazon.com Review
Ron Chernow, the National Book Award-winning author of two astoundingly comprehensive biographies of prominent American financiers, now examines the ultimate decline of such power brokers and the corresponding rise of international money in The Death of the Banker. This surprisingly concise (but no less illuminating) volume opens with an expanded version of a speech on "the dwindling role of the financial intermediary" that he presented early in 1997; it concludes with condensed versions of his earlier books on J. P. Morgan and the Warburgs that show how the essence of financial power has changed in the 20th century.

From Library Journal
Chernow revisits here a period he explored in depth in earlier works: the 19th-century golden age of merchant banking and the likes of J.P. Morgan (The House of Morgan, LJ 2/1/90) in the United States and the Warburgs (The Warburgs, LJ 9/1/93) in Europe. His work grew out of a lecture in which he maintained that "the salient fact of 20th-century finance will be the sharp erosion of banker power." What he meant was the passage of "relational" banking, where bankers had ongoing relationships with their clients, to a "transactional" type of banking, where all bankers are competing for the same work. To justify his point, he here profiles both the Morgan and Warburg banks in two separate essays. While both are well written, one wonders why he's reinvented the wheel. His two previous books on Morgan and Warburg are brilliant and masterly, yet his condensation of their lives for his new book, while highly readable, makes the reader hunger for more. Appropriate for larger business collections.?Richard Drezen, Washington Post News Research Ctr., Washington, D.C.

Review
Some fastidious fans will inevitably call it "Financial History for Dummies" or "Chernow Lite." But I call it a delight--an intimate chat with a writer so thoughtful and well informed about his topic that one closes the book feeling far more worldly and intelligent than when one opened it. -- The New York Times Book Review, Diana B. Henriques

Fascinating Introduction to Banking
By dcreader
This book provides a fascinating overview of the evolution of banking from its origins as an offshoot of general merchandising to the complex subject it's become today. Chernow skillfully and entertainingly reveals how bankers have gone from being all powerful "Masters of the Universe" to much less exalted financial bureaucrats. Chernow could have gone further, though, and extrapolated to explain how this is the natural product of capitalism, where the only true "Masters" are the vast bulk of consumers.

an introduction to the history of merchant banks
By lector avidus
Ron Chernow, who has degrees in English literature from Yale and Cambridge, has written excellent biographies of the Rockefeller, Morgan and Warburg families. In this book, which essentially is a spin-off of his other books, he explains how the economic niche that JP Morgan and the Warburgs inhabited, that of the middleman between the very wealthy and corporations and aspiring entrepreneurs, has disappeared in today's world of telephones, fax machines, the internet, the SEC, and mutual funds and venture capital.

This book grew out of a talk he delivered on the topic, with a brief summary of the Morgans and the Warburgs appended. Oftentimes talks given at conventions are in part written to fill time; this seems to be the case with this book; anyone with a bachelors in economics could summarize it on a page or two without any loss of meaningful detail, the second part is a short look at the lives of the subjects of his other books. Stylistically, the focus is on the use of elegant English, to such an extent that the book suffers under it. There certainly is a place for beautiful English in historical works, as anyone who has read Macaulay's History of England knows, but not as its own reward.

Those who want to familiarize themselves with the economic history of the great merchant bankers in an unthreatening way free of all too much economic jargon will greatly enjoy this book. PhD economists, on the other hand, will probably feel that Chernow ought to get to the point.

Twelve years ahead of its time
By Aaron C. Brown
As other reviewers have mentioned, the main part of this book is an essay about the historical transformation of finance, which is then illustrated by brief accounts of the Morgan and Warburg banking dynasties and collateral historical material. I did not read this when in came out in 1997, because I had read the longer Chernow works, including The House of Morgan and The Warburgs. I picked it up for a train ride the other day and was astounded at its prescience.

Chernow sketches the development of early finance arising naturally out of merchant activity and evolving into more specialized institutions subservient to users of capital (usually princes fighting wars). As finance globalized but information technology stagnated, bankers grew in power relative to their borrowers, reaching a peak around 1900. Changes in laws and information processing increased the stature of the great corporations, which evolved their own banking services just as early modern merchants had done 500 years earlier. Somewhat later, demographic and other changes empowered suppliers of capital. These two trends squeezed out the banker.

This is a simple story and even with elaboration makes a short book. What's astounding to me is how well this account explains the twelve years since it was published. It's hard to imagine how someone could see so clearly at a time when some of the most prestigious banks (including Goldman Sachs and Lazard Frères) were private partnerships, Glass-Steagall was in force and equity underwriting was the hot business. Chernow ignored all that, looking to a time when finance was dominated by diversified public companies, Glass-Steagall and banking regulation in general was irrelevant and underwriting and advisory work were minor side businesses to asset management and proprietary trading.

I suppose the moral is that a historical perspective is more valuable than detailed study of current events. In any case, I recommend this book both as a quick, pleasant read and a useful counterweight to books over-reacting to last month's events.

The Clothes They Stood Up In, by Alan Bennett

The Ransomes had been burgled. "Robbed," Mrs. Ransome said. "Burgled," Mr. Ransome corrected. Premises were burgled; persons were robbed. Mr. Ransome was a solicitor by profession and thought words mattered. Though "burgled" was the wrong word too. Burglars select; they pick; they remove one item and ignore others. There is a limit to what burglars can take: they seldom take easy chairs, for example, and even more seldom settees. These burglars did. They took everything.

This swift-moving comic fable will surprise you with its concealed depths. When the sedate Ransomes return from the opera to find their Notting Hill flat stripped absolutely bare—down to the toilet paper off the roll (a hard-to-find shade of forget-me-not blue)—they face a dilemma: Who are they without the things they've spent a lifetime accumulating? Suddenly the world is full of unlimited and frightening possibility. But just as they begin adjusting to this giddy freedom, a newfound interest in sex, and a lack of comfy chairs, a surreal reversal of events causes them to question their assumptions yet again.

The Ransomes' bafflement is the reader's delight. Alan Bennett's gentle but scathing wit, unerring ear for dialogue, and sense of the absurd make The Clothes They Stood Up In a memorable exploration of where in life true riches lie.

The Meaning of Material Things
By Amanda Richards
There are two stories in this slim package, both dealing with people’s relationships with their possessions.

In the first, Mr. and Mrs. Ransome return from the opera to find their flat totally empty. The casserole has disappeared along with the oven, and even the toilet paper’s gone. Mr. Ransome mostly misses his stereo equipment (and of course the toilet paper) but cheers up when he remembers that he can upgrade his technology with the insurance refund.

Mrs. Ransome quickly gets over her shock, and begins shopping for the bare essentials to tide them over until the insurance cheque arrives. During this exercise, she rediscovers the simple things and learns that life without all her accumulated baggage isn’t that bad after all.

When the mystery is revealed, Mrs. Ransome has a whole new outlook on life, and although her husband has also changed, he hasn’t evolved as much as she has. This is a story with some very funny bits, but also with some important messages for all of us.

The other (shorter) story is about an eccentric woman who makes her home in a van, surrounded by everything she owns. Also very funny, it is so rich in description that your nose turns up whenever the author takes you inside the van.

If you’re looking for an entertaining read, and don’t feel like tackling a whole book, this one is highly recommended.

unexpected gem
By Constant Reader
This book was a great surprise, suggested by a book club, I had never heard of Allen Bennett, but it turns out he is wise and knowing in the ways of what we now call "Minimalism" as well as communication between couples, and even an interesting take on death of a spouse and personal growth. If you find this book speaks to you about grief, "The Beginner's Goodbye" by Anne Tyler may also speak to you. The accompanying novella, "The Lady in the Van" also speaks to the dilemma of those who are diffident and just plain cowardly about refusing those who impose on them --and how that imposition sometimes plays out. (good film also with Maggie Smith)

Proving Darwin: Making Biology Mathematical, by Gregory Chaitin

Groundbreaking mathematician Gregory Chaitin gives us the first book to posit that we can prove how Darwin’s theory of evolution works on a mathematical level.

For years it has been received wisdom among most scientists that, just as Darwin claimed, all of the Earth’s life-forms evolved by blind chance. But does Darwin’s theory function on a purely mathematical level? Has there been enough time for evolution to produce the remarkable biological diversity we see around us? It’s a question no one has yet answered—in fact, no one has even attempted to answer it until now.

In this illuminating and provocative book, Gregory Chaitin argues that we can’t be sure evolution makes sense without a mathematical theory. He elucidates the mathematical scheme he’s developed that can explain life itself, and examines the works of mathematical pioneers John von Neumann and Alan Turing through the lens of biology. Chaitin presents an accessible introduction to metabiology, a new way of thinking about biological science that highlights the mathematical structures underpinning the biological world. Fascinating and thought-provoking, Proving Darwin makes clear how biology may have found its greatest ally in mathematics.

About the Author

Gregory Chaitin is widely known for his work on metamathematics and for his discovery of the celebrated Omega number, which proved the fundamental unknowability of math. He is the author of many books on mathematics, including Meta Math! The Quest for Omega. This is his first book on biology. Chaitin was for many years at the IBM Watson Research Center in New York. The research described in this book was carried out at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where Chaitin is now a professor. An Argentine-American, he is an honorary professor at the University of Buenos Aires and has an honorary doctorate from the National University of Cordoba, the oldest university in Argentina.

One
Introduction: Overview of Proving Darwin

Like many pure mathematicians, I like giving “chalk” talks: improvised talks given on a blackboard or white- board using a minimum of technological assistance. Another strategy is for me to fill the board with what I want to cover just before I start to lecture, while people are still coming in, so that they can take in all the key ideas at a glance. In a large auditorium, however, a projector is necessary, or nobody will see anything.

On the facing page you can see me giving an overview of this book in a large auditorium at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The four slides I prepared are on pages 5 and 6. They summarize Chapters 2 to 4, which outline my strategy for making biology mathematical. After you finish reading these chapters, you should review the slides. Then they will make more sense.

You’ve heard people refer to DNA as a computer program? Well, that’s the whole idea: to make this metaphor into a mathematical theory of evolution. In fact, it turns out that the mathematical tools for doing this were already available in the 1970s. More precisely, we will treat evolution as a random walk in software space. Random walks are an idea that mathematicians feel comfortable with, although the space we are walking around in at random is bigger than usual.

I call this proposed new field “metabiology” because it is a highly simplified version of real biology—otherwise I wouldn’t be able to prove any theorems. These theorems are presented in Chapter 5, which is the climax of the book, and was a talk that I gave at the Santa Fe Institute. Chapters 6 to 8 discuss the broader significance of metabiology, theological, political and epistemological. And then there are two appendices.

In the first appendix you can read the crucial section on self-reproducing automata in John von Neumann’s far-seeing “DNA = Software” paper that influenced Sydney Brenner, who in turn influenced Francis Crick—a remarkable fact that I only discovered while working on this book. And the second appendix gives some additional mathematical details that may be of interest to experts.

Finally, I give a short list of suggested further reading, some books and a few articles that are important if you want to really understand metabiology. These are the books and articles that helped me the most to come up with a strategy for making biology mathematical, plus a few more related items that I threw in just for the fun of it. Enjoy them all!

Interesting ideas but short on actual content/results
By J. Andrew Howe
This book promised so much, and yet delivered so little. To be sure, the author has some very interesting ideas that are worth being exposed to but that does not save this book. The first problem is in delivery - almost the entire book seems to be taken verbatim from class lectures. Certain content is duplicated often enough, that the book could have been cut in half with no loss. The second issue lies in the content itself. The author claims to have developed a working toy model of Darwinian evolution. But there's one fundamental problem here - his model relies on algorithmic mutation to introduce diversity, whereas real organisms generally undergo bitwise mutation. Hence, his model allows for a much more sophisticated search of the genotype space than is allowed in nature. In the same vein, by his own admission, the model can not actually be simulated, because it relies on a fitness function that can not be guaranteed to produce a result.

Not as important, but still misleading, is that his result claims to model Darwinian evolution. This is not true, as Darwinism posits that all existing life forms came into being from nothing (or from a primordial soup, if you wish) solely through natural selection acting on genetic crossover & mutation. What his model actually demonstrates (or would, if it could be simulated) is non-Darwinian adaptation & evolution. His evolution is only capable of tiny incremental changes that can not possibly create entirely new structures - they can only rearrange existing structures.

In summary, the fundamental ideas relating biology-mathematics-creativity are very interesting, as is the goal of developing a mathematical model for evolution. However, all this is worth a 30-60 minute lecture; not this book.

Thought-provoking.....
By Michael Jandrok
Mathematician Gregory Chaitin attempts to provide a mathematical model of evolution in this short book based on a university course given in the Spring of 2011 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where the author is a professor. It also adapts material given at one of his lectures at the Santa Fe Institute. It is a quick read and an outline at best of his work, but it does give the reader a general idea of the concepts behind what the author calls "metabiology", an attempt to model evolutionary adaptation through computer software rather than natural software, otherwise known as DNA.

The central premise of this book is that by utilizing algorithmic information theory and the flexible and creative nature of postmodern mathematics, one can construct a working mathematical toy model of evolution, creating a piece of randomly mutating software that selects for a fitness trait. The main idea here is that DNA is a naturally occurring piece of software, our internal programming language as it were. This is not an original concept, but it is one that Chaitin expands upon greatly in the text.

I'll admit that it's an absolutely compelling idea. Evolution, after all, is the backbone of modern biology, but its main concepts are often misunderstood or outright rejected by a significant portion of the population. If one can really take a mathematical model and "prove" that the basic mechanisms of evolution (random mutations and natural selection) work as advertised, then it could go a long way towards advancing scientific literacy.

Keep in mind that the author's model is simplistic at best, selecting for only one trait and having none of the environmental pressures that truly drive adaptation. That said, it DOES work, and it provides a foundation for more complex models that will more thoroughly mimic life processes in the future, especially as biotechnology advances into computer science.

There ARE mathematical formulas presented in the text, but they don't overshadow the main ideas. You'll probably understand most of the general ideas if you have a basic proficiency in high school level algebra and/or logic. The appendices go into additional technical detail, but they can be skipped unless you have the educational foundation to fully understand the concepts presented.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the subject matter, though I would like to see an expanded and more accessible revision of this work at some point in the future.

The Motivation to Look Deeper
By T. H. Ray
I feel compelled to weigh in here, if only to help balance the negative reviews. It's true that one who is not familiar with Gregory Chaitin's broader research program will probably not fully comprehend important points of his lecture series on which *Proving Darwin* is based. As one who has listened to Dr. Chaitin hold forth to an enchanted audience for a 20 minute stretch without benefit of notes or visual aids, however, I expect that if you give him a chance to influence your thinking on how life and mathematics intersect and evolve together -- you'll be enchanted, too. More, you might be motivated to look into the rich tapestry of results that Chaitin has woven from his Algorithmic Information Theory and Omega Number.

It's well worth the effort.

Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone, by James Baldwin

At the height of his theatrical career, the actor Leo Proudhammer is nearly felled by a heart attack. As he hovers between life and death, Baldwin shows the choices that have made him enviably famous and terrifyingly vulnerable.

For between Leo's childhood on the streets of Harlem and his arrival into the intoxicating world of the theater lies a wilderness of desire and loss, shame and rage. An adored older brother vanishes into prison. There are love affairs with a white woman and a younger black man, each of whom will make irresistible claims on Leo's loyalty. And everywhere there is the anguish of being black in a society that at times seems poised on the brink of total racial war. Overpowering in its vitality, extravagant in the intensity of its feeling, Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone is a major work of American literature.

Excellent but not his best.
By Christopher Lee
I bought Tell Me How Long The Train's Been Gone still swooning over Baldwin's Another Country. To my disappointment, this book did not have the same complexity, depth, nor energy that Another Country had. I found myself sticking to the book in some hopes that I would reach the same feeling of satisfaction and rapture that I found with Another Country, or Giovanni's Room. Not a complete waste of time, but not Baldwin's best.

James Baldwin's overlooked masterpiece about a man's juggling identities
By Matthew M. Yau
If Giovanni's Room is an unresolved love story between two men, Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone puts its protagonist in the center of social spotlight where ideals of ethnics, politics, and sex force him to put on a mask. Leo Proudhammer, a 39-years-old black man, suffers from a heart attack at the height of his theatrical career, forcing him to abort all ongoing performance and rehearsal. As he hovers between life and death, James Baldwin delineates a tapestry of human life that is terrifyingly vulnerable - through the meticulous choices that have rendered him enviously famous in theater, through the racial and gay covering that have split him into multiple identities.

There exists something edgy and cruel about a childhood riddled with braving the Harlem streets. Proudhammer often found him in the spotlight of eyes: eyes of children who outjocked him, eyes of the white cops toward whom he felt a rush of murderous hatred, and the tell-tale eyes of the older folks who suspected of his sexuality. The prose sustains a tincture of anguish, a tinge of paranoid, of being black in a society that at times seems poised on the brink of unstoppable racial war owing the ludicrous demands to cover stereotype associated with both race and sexuality.

The theatrical industry which Proudhammer desires throws him further in disguises. Ironically it is through the many disguises he wears that he comes to term with his means. Instead of fleeing from the truth, he is approaching the reality. Disguises in a sense help make the truth a quantity with which he can live. In the juggling selves, Proudhammer retains loyalty to a white woman and a young black man. At first he might be most intimidated by his color for he does not appear to know that he is colored. He is met with people's baleful exasperation as if he is possessed by some evil spirit. Then he begins to be intimidated (and confronted), far more grievously, by the fact of his sexuality. He is gripped with the realization that he has never, in the sexual context, arrived at an understanding of being bisexual or gay.

Written during a time in which racism and assimilation to white norms are horrifyingly rife, Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone brings to vivid view a man struggling to become himself through identities of a black man, a bisexual man, and an artist. Various occasions demand him to cover one of more of these identities in order to fit in. The novel pieces together moments of a man's life that teach one the price of human connection. Trapped in the wrong time, at the wrong place, and with the wrong ambitions trapped in the wrong skin, Proudhammer's perseverance earns him a reward that redeems and justifies all that pain, stigma, and bewilderment he once experienced.

A Star Is Born
By M. Buzalka
Tell Me How Long the Train’s Been Gone (1968), James Baldwin’s fourth novel, is an overlong, somewhat meandering chronicle of the life of Leo Proudhammer, a black man who rises from a poverty-stricken childhood in Harlem to become one of the leading stage actors of the 1950s and early 60s. It is told mostly in flashback, with the story opening as Leo, at the height of his fame, suffers a heart attack on stage during a performance in San Francisco.

The flashbacks deal primarily with Leo’s relationships with his older brother Caleb and with Barbara, a white woman with whom he has a long-term relationship that ranges from platonic to sexual to contentious. Baldwin gives us long scenes from these and other relationships, some wonderfully realized, others drawn out to seemingly little purpose. Most curiously, he gives fairly short shrift to a third important relationship, Leo’s affair (he’s bi-sexual) with Christopher, a young black radical who represents the new black militant attitude of the 60s.

The other failure, even less explicable, is Baldwin’s neglecting to give the reader a fuller chronicle of what is the undoubtedly most interesting thing about Leo: his rise to stardom in spite of the racism of the times and the theater industry. We do get to see his first big success, in a radical staging of a minor work in a small out-of-the-way theater, but that could hardly have propelled someone to the kind of stardom Baldwin grants his protagonist. How did he build on that stepping stone? We aren’t shown, even though it was the one big question hanging over the narrative in the many preceding pages.

This isn’t to say that this book is a tedious read. Baldwin’s too good a writer and even scenes that really go nowhere retain in intrinsic narrative interest due to his descriptions, but it is nevertheless a very frustrating exercise to read and feel cheated at the end.
