Nancy Culpepper: Stories, by Bobbie Ann Mason

Kentucky native Nancy Culpepper boldly left home to attend school in Massachusetts, married a Yankee, and raised her son in the Northeast. “One day I was feeding chickens and listening to Hank Williams and the next day I was expected to know what wines went with what,” she tells her husband, Jack. Yet no matter where she travels, her rural southern heritage is never far from her thoughts, her habits, and her heart.

Nancy is on a lifelong quest to understand her place in the world. Returning home to the family farm, she searches for photographic evidence of an ancestor bearing her own name. Still in her jeans, she brings home strange ideas and an assertiveness she learned up north.
Always adventurous, Nancy travels far and wide–searching, seeking. The narrative sweep of her life traverses the turbulent sixties, the Vietnam War, the eighties and the foreboding death of John Lennon, and finally the new millennium–when a self-assured Nancy finally emerges. These humorous and often touching stories recount her courtship and marriage to Jack, her relationship with her precocious son, and the deep, loving bond between her parents, Spence and Lila Culpepper. Eventually Nancy’s marriage is threatened by a cultural divide that plagued her and Jack from the start. But when she inherits the Culpepper family farm and discovers more pieces of her ancestral puzzle, she realizes that her life is assuming its proper shape. Later, standing on a lonely mountain in England, she sees the world from a surprising perspective.

Bestselling author Bobbie Ann Mason’s prizewinning Nancy Culpepper chronicles have appeared in The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Southern Review, and other distinguished literary anthologies. She has compiled these stories into one definitive collection, which includes the novella Spence + Lila, two new, never-before-published stories, and one Pushcart Prize winner. Heartfelt and thought-provoking, Nancy Culpepper is a poignant depiction of change and growth in a modern-day heroine.

From Publishers Weekly
A somber, slow-going drama in stories by award-winning author Mason (An Atomic Romance) follows a Kentucky farm family's quiet changes over the decades. When the first story begins in 1980, Nancy, the elder daughter of the Culpepper family, is in her late 30s, has an eight-year-old son with husband Jack Cleveland (a Yankee) and lives outside Philadelphia. Returning to the family farm to help her parents, Lila and Spence, move Granny into a nursing home, Nancy concerns herself with old photographs buried in Granny's house that feature Nancy's namesake, a long-lost aunt whom no one seems to know anything about. Subsequent stories deal with Granny's death, the decline and death of Jack's dog, the building tension between Nancy and Jack—both yearning for the spontaneity of their swinging '60s courtship—and the fate of the Culpepper farm. In the longest story, Lila is diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoes surgery and is lovingly nursed by Spence, Nancy and her sister, Cat. Though detailed and honest in its depiction of illness and loss and skillful in handling Nancy's lingering discomfort with the North, Mason's novel-in-stories lacks her usual sparkle. (July)

From Booklist
Kentuckian Nancy Culpepper first appeared in a 1980 short story, and she has resurfaced in Mason's much-loved fiction ever since. In a volume similar to Ellen Gilchrist's collections of stories about her recurring characters Rhoda Manning and Nora Jane Whittington, Mason collects her Nancy Culpepper stories, including the powerful novella about Nancy's mother's bout with cancer, "Spence + Lila" (1985), and several potent new tales. Mason writes with a swinging, country-road gait and a sunny transparency that belie the emotional weight of her tender and bittersweet tales of family, home, and loss. A calm, reticent, and subtly charming historian married to an intense photographer, Nancy harbors a deadpan wit. When we first meet her, she is looking through her granny's long-neglected family photographs. In "The Heirs," a flat-out masterpiece, she is once again sorting through her family's belongings, this time finding a stick of dynamite and a cache of letters that proves far more explosive. Mason sends her stories aloft like kites on the wind, expertly working the string, her feet planted firmly on the sustaining earth. Donna Seaman

Love, Family, Acceptance, Perseverance
By David Keymer
This weekend, I read and finished two beautiful books, both fiction: Nancy Culpepper, by Bobby Ann Mason, and Forgetfulness, by Ward Just, both published in 2006.

Nancy Culpepper is a set of short stories about the protagonist, augmented by a novella about her parents, Spence + Lila (first published in the 80s --I loved when it first came out).

Nancy is from Kentucky. Her parents, Spence and Lila, are hard-scrabble farmers who eventually do better with a small dairy farm. Until her grandmother dies --the first forty-one years of their married life-- Spence and Lila live with or close to her grandmother, never traveling.

Nancy married an easterner, a photographer named Jack. They live in Cambridge MA and later somewhere rural in Pennsylvania. Later, when they separate, they move around.

The book is about Nancy's dance: between her country roots and her love of her parents on the one side and her eastern education (Radcliffe, I think --I don't want to hunt it up right now), tastes and manners.

The first three short stories, written in the 80s and early 90s, are wonderful. Spence + Lila is a gem --it narrates Lila's stay in the hospital for a mastectomy and an operation on one of her carotid arteries, but it's really about love, family, acceptance and spunk. It reminds you of feelings within your own family that you have but seldom or never articulate. It also reminds you that love doesn't have to be articulate to be felt.

The final short stories --there are two or three-- are good but not as good as the first ones. But it doesn't make a difference.

Mason's stories capture an engaging personality striving to make sense and gain pleasure from a life that has its share of stresses and disconnects but is ultimately self-affirming. Mason's view of life is intensely local and real, but ultimately benevolent. She writes about *connection. It's a lovely book.

(I reviewed Mason's Feather Crowns for Library Journal when it came out and loved it. Her collection of short stories, Shiloh, is superb. Her novel, In Country, evoked the best performance Bruce Willis ever gave when it was translated --fairly faithfully-- into a movie.)

Thank you, Ms Mason
By Chris C. Hill
Bobbie Ann Mason is a so-called regional writer because she writes what she knows well. This is sometimes ecstatic, sometimes ordinary, sometimes painful. Her tales take aim: Mason is the kind of artist who does not publish a story, long or short, before she has found its focal point, its potential for epiphany. To find her focal points she augments memory with a probing imagination which, for this reader, takes her into the heart of the human condition.

The volume Nancy Culpepper collects previously published stories and a novella together with two new stories. The first, longish, is a fine study of the American Dream (you can be a millionaire!) as it actually plays out. The second, one of Mason's best stories ever, drives toward an insight that unites the earlier pieces while suggesting a way readers can sort out their own lifelong losses and gains. It's the reason this volume works so well.

Nancy Culpepper is as close as Bobbie Ann Mason has come (in fiction) to autobiography. As "On the Eve" is clearly by Turgenev, not his character Elena, so "Nancy Culpepper" is definitely by Bobbie Ann Mason. This plays out beautifully in passages like the description (p.222) of Nancy's musings while gazing into the mirror. Such passages invite us to enjoy the story at hand while subtly suggesting attitudes that move us toward our own focal points, even when we weren't thinking we had any.

authentic
By Constance Hays
I have missed this author. Just haven't kept up with her, to my regret. She is a very good writet, that makes a story authentic in all of its parts. her location, people and perspectives are true. No matter how different a story is ,from your own experiences, one knows when it wavers from the real, or the 'truth'. Bobbie Lee Mason never wavers and that is such a pleasure.

How to Be a (Bad) Birdwatcher, by Simon Barnes

Look out the window.
See a bird.
Enjoy it.
CONGRATULATIONS!
You are now a bad birdwatcher.

Inthis refreshingly irreverent introduction to the subject, Simon Barnes makes birdwatching simple—and above all, enjoyable.

Anyone who has ever looked up at the sky or gazed out the window knows a thing or two about birds. Who doesn’t know the brisk purpose of a sparrow, the airy insouciance of the seagull, the dramatic power of the hawk? Birds are beautiful, you can encounter them anywhere, and they embody one of the primal human aspirations: flight.

Birdwatching starts, simply, with a habit of looking. You let birds into your life a little at a time. You remember bird names as you would the names of people you’ve enjoyed meeting. And if you share your looking and listening with other people, so much the better. Birdwatching might even help you get along with the father who never approved of anything you did—as it did for Barnes.

As Barnes shares his relaxed principles of birdwatching, he also shows us the power of place: the elation of spotting kingfishers in Kashmir, hawks over the Great Lakes, or the birds closest to home. And he shows how, no matter where you live, birds can connect you to the greater glory of life.

Funny, enthusiastic, and inspiring, How to Be a Bad Birdwatcher demonstrates why you don’t have to have fancy binoculars or lifetime checklists to discover a new world. So, begin the habit of looking. See that bird . . . Enjoy it!

Anyone can be a bad birdwatcher. As Barnes, chief sportswriter for the Times (London) and columnist for birds magazine, explains, the only requirement is developing the habit of looking. All it takes is the willingness to look. Barnes has written a witty and loving exploration of why people like to watch birds. Even the most jaded city dweller knows more birds than he thinks he does, and can achieve pleasure by looking at them. The more you learn, the more you will say, "Wow!" This is the heart of Barnes' book--the learning and the wow. In the midst of our looking, we are seeing birds as part of the natural world, observing biodiversity, ecology, behavioral biology, and evolution in action, without even knowing it. The love for these ubiquitous creatures that can fly shines throughout this work, making it a book that will be popular among fans of both birds and nature writing--and it is a bargain at the price. "Birdwatching is a state of being, not an activity."
By Jerry Guild
If you have a little trouble getting my title;you'll surely know what it means if you read this gem of a book.I have been an avid birder for close to 20 years. In that time I have compiled a list of nearly 600 species in North America, met and birded with hundreds of other birders, made numerous friends, travelled far and wide, as well as locally, joined several bird clubs, served on executives, read hundreds of 'bird books';and own around 1000 books dealing with every aspect of birdwatching. With all that;I am pleased to call myself a 'Bad Birdwatcher';even though I had never heard the term before.

What makes this book so good is that it does an excellent job of telling what birding is all about, the many ways one can partake in it,and what attracts so many to it.In other words,if you want to see what birding really is or want to give a friend a book to find out for themselves, what this birding you do is all about;then you won't find a better book .

The author is an experienced birder from Britain, and quite a bit of what he talks about is birding in Britain.Don't let that disuade you as he covers a lot of other countries and everything he says is applicable to any country as well as very good for a rank amateur to the most seasoned 'expert'.

He also talks about something I don't believe I've ever seen covered. He explains the reason for this interest in birds and not other animals, insects, and other species. That's not to say that some people get interested in butterflies, mammals, etc.;but birdwatching outstrips them all.

"Anyone who has ever gazed up at the sky or stared out of the window, knows something about birds. In this funny, inspiring eye-opening book Simon Barnes paints a riviting picture of how birdwatching has framed his life and can help all of us to a better understanding of our place on this planet."

A great addition to the numerous bird books, but one that is different and has something to offer for everyone;be they already a birder or just interested.

Lovely and inspiring
By a reader
I can't say enough good things about this book. Lovely, lovely lovely; charming and thoughtfully written. And I've been inspired to be a bad birdwatcher myself, purchasing a pair of "bins" and a local bird guidebook and going out to see what I could see. And I saw much, including my first-ever tiny indigo bunting! I may be hooked. I've already bought several copies of this book for friends. Wonderful.

BARELY adequate as a review book; definitely not a stand-alone
By Coffeecat
Princeton Review is usually right-on in terms of amount of detail; for example, PR is perfect for AP World History and AP Chemistry.

This APUSH version, however, simple leaves too much out. I bought it intending to use it just as a quick review (my main book, which I highly recommended, is the fantastic AMSCO book). But PR is just barely adequate as a review.

For example, it skims over the Progressive Era in 1 and a half pages, mentioning President Taft in just one sentence. The book skips right from the Progressive Era to WWI, without mentioning the Spanish-American war (and American imperialism) at all.

I attribute the 5 I got on the test to AMSCO. Princeton Review's APUSH book leaves much to be desired.

easy to use and effective
By someone
This book is great for those of us who are too busy or can't concentrate on our textbooks. This book helped me a lot in my APUSH class because it's much easier to read and much shorter than the textbook. The questions for each section should tell you what you understand or do not understand in that section. You can use it as an indicator on what part of your textbook you need to read more carefully to get that A on your tests and 5 on the AP test.

Great review that condenses the important details
By hwhnj
This is one of the best review books for the AP US History test out there. First of all, it condenses all the important details, concepts, and names for you. Too many other review guides serve to go way too far into detail. This book skims the surface on every important era of US History so studying does not become overwhelming and you are not memorizing punitive, useless trivia (something I have seen way too much with other AP US review books). Although it only has two practice tests, they are very realistic depictions of what the real test looks like. The book does an excellent job covering every aspect of the test, that is, the Document Based Question, the multiple choice, and the two free-response questions. In order to best study for the test, I recommend taking notes on every section so you can review your notes later. That's exactly what I did and I got a 5 on the test (and I'm no history buff either). Princeton Review's AP US History review is truly a worthy purchase.

I bought this study book and 3 additional practice exams for a total of 5 practice exams. As a poor student, I could not afford private tutors or sign up for classes. Although I believe retaining information from undergraduate science classes is the most effective way to score well, this study guide helped me a lot, especially for giving brief overviews on certain topics. My main problem was the science section, and I thought the study guide did a rather good job summarizing most topics. I studied for approximately 2 weeks before my DAT, scored an overall of 21, and got accepted to dental school.

word to the wise... sitting and reading a text is not a good way to study for the DAT. it all just becomes mush in your brain. (but hey, it works for some people) there are many other video and interactive resources out there to help you learn this stuff. and if you must read a text, just use your old college texts, the scope of information on the DAT is way to broad to be covered in a 400 page book that covers bio, genchem, ochem, AND math etc...

Used in conjunction withe the OAT guide. This was so far head and shoulders better than Barrons and Kaplan guides I bought it wasn't even funny. You could use this and only this and nail the OAT/DAT. I had even bought the Destroyer books but those are WAY over-complications of what is on the test and struggling with them is not a wise use of time. Register the book and use the online practice tests. The practice tests provided were SPOT ON for the real thing. My AA was a 360 and my total science a 370. I even received a small scholarship and think my success was due to heavy use of the materials in this book and the online free accompanying material.

Reading in the Dark: A Novel, by Seamus Deane

A New York Times Notable Book
Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize
Winner of the Irish Times Fiction Award and International Award

"A swift and masterful transformation of family griefs and political violence into something at once rhapsodic and heartbreaking. If Issac Babel had been born in Derry, he might have written this sudden, brilliant book."
--Seamus Heaney

Hugely acclaimed in Great Britain, where it was awarded the Guardian Fiction Prize and short-listed for the Booker, Seamus Deane's first novel is a mesmerizing story of childhood set against the violence of Northern Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s.

The boy narrator grows up haunted by a truth he both wants and does not want to discover. The matter: a deadly betrayal, unspoken and unspeakable, born of political enmity. As the boy listens through the silence that surrounds him, the truth spreads like a stain until it engulfs him and his family. And as he listens, and watches, the world of legend--the stone fort of Grianan, home of the warrior Fianna; the Field of the Disappeared, over which no gulls fly--reveals its transfixing reality. Meanwhile the real world of adulthood unfolds its secrets like a collection of folktales: the dead sister walking again; the lost uncle, Eddie, present on every page; the family house "as cunning and articulate as a labyrinth, closely designed, with someone sobbing at the heart of it."

Seamus Deane has created a luminous tale about how childhood fear turns into fantasy and fantasy turns into fact. Breathtakingly sad but vibrant and unforgettable, Reading in the Dark is one of the finest books about growing up--in Ireland or anywhere--that has ever been written.

Amazon.com Review
The Derry of poet Seamus Deane's first novel, Reading in the Dark is a perilous place. Ghosts haunt the stairwells of apartment buildings, a curse follows two families down through the generations, close friends turn out to be police informers, and the police are as likely to persecute an innocent man as protect him. And hovering over all the violence, poverty, and despair of 1940s Northern Ireland is the specter of the "Troubles." The hero of the novel is an unnamed young man whose life turns upside down when a policeman frames him. Deception becomes his only means of self-defense. But the initial lie on the part of the policeman and the narrator's corresponding trickery are only part of the tangled web Deane weaves here. Early in the novel we learn that Uncle Eddie, an Irish Republican Army gunman, was blown up in the town distillery in 1922. In addition to sorting out his own problems, the narrator seeks the truth about his uncle's death.

Reading in the Dark sounds grim, and in some respects it is, yet leavening is provided by infusions of the Irish folktales and legends that inform the characters' daily life. And then there is the language. Deane is a poet, and his prose shows it: sex is like fire, "glinting with greed and danger"; ice snores and candles are swathed in a "thick drapery of wax." Readers looking for a thoughtful, serious, and beautifully written novel will find one in Reading in the Dark.

From Publishers Weekly
Deane is a poet and a celebrated literary historian, and this, his first novel, was deservedly shortlisted for England's Booker prize last year (it did win the Guardian Fiction Prize). At first glance, it covers familiar turf: an Irish family riven by the political strife of the 1920s trying to live with the legacy of bloodshed and betrayal?all seen through the eyes of a sensitive young boy as he looks back 20 years later. But Deane has a poet's eye, which transforms the most everyday material into something eternally rich and strange: "The rain lifted away, the sunlight lay piebald on the path for a brief time, then the rain shuttered us in again." And he watches the long struggles of the family with the same kind of patient endurance they themselves display. Gradually, their story emerges from the mists in which it has been wrapped for a generation: an uncle who in family legend had fled to Chicago had in fact been executed, mistakenly, as an informer on the IRA by members of his own family; the real informer, who had been loved by the boy's mother and had briefly married her sister, had escaped, tipped off by the police. Mother and father each know some of the story, and realize that knowing all of it will drive them apart; their life together is a long, loving grief. All this is glimpsed by the narrator in hints and flashes, combined with hilarious surges of comic relief?a lecture on the facts of life by a well-meaning priest, an incomprehensible math lesson at school, the brisk tirades of a local madman, a sly way of getting back at a hated policeman by way of the bishop. In Deane's hands, the language leaps and quivers, and the life he illuminates is at once achingly sad and transfixingly real. 35,000 first printing.

From School Library Journal
YA. The narrator of this coming-of-age novel lives in Derry, Northern Ireland, and is the third oldest child in a large Catholic family that has been loosely connected with the IRA since its inception. The narrator's earliest memories begin in February 1945, when he first starts to perceive the secrets within his family. Each chapter is short, dated with a month and year in which some new comprehension or perception of the world outside opens up to him. There is pathos as he remembers his sister's death, his Aunt Ena's death, his grandfather's deathbed confession, and his mother's growing depression, but there is also humor. Each episode is linked to another with various personalities emerging to weld these links to the narrator's understanding of the life around him and his family's role in it. Superstitions, spells, myths, fairy eyes, the Fianna, the old fort of Grianan, the Catholic Church, and always the storytelling blend themselves in this contemporary look at life in County Donegal through the eyes of one young boy. The underlining mystery, the novel's readability, and the experiences of this protagonist make this fictional memoir highly recommended for all YAs.?Dottie Kraft, formerly at Fairfax County Public Schools, VA

beautifully written if not a little difficult to follow
By A Customer
seamus deane is undeniably a gifted writer, and this book is beautifully written in a haunting sort of way. the plot, while ultimately quite interesting and dark, is complex and very, very difficult to follow. it provides an interesting insight into the irish dilemma and its effect on the personal relationships of those involved with it.

Amazon.com Review
Tamasin Day-Lewis writes so beautifully, so eloquently, and so descriptively that it's almost impossible to choose which of her exceptional, delectable tarts to begin with. Her tone is warm, friendly, and generous, and her attitude towards food and cooking will make you nod and smile and want to read this cookbook aloud to anyone who'll listen. She laments that the "current speed-addicted climate" has pushed so many of us to give up cooking from scratch. We have been convinced to make questionably nutritious fast food instead of relishing the relaxation, pleasure, enjoyment of not just preparing good food, but of eating it in the way it is meant to be eaten--by savoring it slowly.

Early childhood memories of standing on a kitchen chair, cuffs covered with flour, making her first tarts, and then impatiently biting into a hot jam tart and the sweetly searing pain that results inspired Day-Lewis to write this book. Tarts, she argues, are superior fast food. With practice, the dough can be made quickly and in batches large enough that there's no need to make the dough every time. Fillings can be as simple as the onions, eggs and cream necessary for the Onion Tart. And longer recipes are just longer, not any more complicated or difficult to follow. "Anyone reading this book," says Day-Lewis, "should not doubt his or her ability to achieve every one of the recipes." She assumes "basic skills and competence," and a bit of curiosity. Many of these recipes are remakes of old favorites, but because Day-Lewis is writing in the U.K. and Ireland, most of those old favorites are brand new in America. The Leek, Potato, and Oatmeal Tart is a substantial cold-weather dish made with oatmeal crust filled with garlic, leeks, potatoes, and cheddar. Treacle Tart is "gloopy, gooky, toothachingly sweet," best served with "a solid spoonful of clotted cream slipping deliquescent from the slice, turning buttery at the edges as it slides." How can anyone read that and not start checking the kitchen for ingredients?

Divided by the chapters "Savory Tarts," "Sweet Tarts," and "Other People's Tarts" (try Nigel Slater's Broccoli, Blue Cheese, and Crème Fraiche Tart and Richard Corrigan's Banana Tart), the book is sprinkled with vibrant color photographs of lusciousness such as the Peach, Vanilla, and Amaretti Tarte Tatin ("amber-hued ... speckled with vanilla and sticky with caramel") and the bright yellow Corn and Scallion Tart with a Polenta Crust. Day-Lewis is inventive, as is evident with recipes such as Monkfish Tart with Bearnaise, Tomato, Goat's Camembert, and Herb Tart; Rhubarb, Honey, and Saffron Tart; and Brûléed Black Currant or Blueberry Tart. If your taste buds (or those of your audience) are less adventurous, you can start with Asparagus Tart, Potato, Garlic, and Parsley Torte, or Quiche Lorraine. And no one will ever turn down a "state-of-the-art" Lemon Tart, a Strawberry Tart ("voluptuous ... and glazed to gloopy perfection"), or Simon Hopkinson's Chocolate Tart ("If there is a heaven, this is it," says Day-Lewis). Whatever your time frame, your kitchen comfort level, or your palate, Day-Lewis will leave you with your cuffs in flour, composing a thank-you note in your head to this most delightful author. --Leora Y. Bloom

From Publishers Weekly
Tarts, when done well, are gorgeous creationsDtheir fillings displayed in buttery crust like jewels shown on velvet. Day-Lewis (The English Woman's Kitchen; West of Ireland Summers: A Cookbook) does not disappoint; in addition to delectable recipes and luxurious photos, her prose itself is exquisite. Even the most jaded palate might be tempted with her description of the much-maligned Quiche Lorraine "with a buttery pastry and an unctuously creamy, bacony, barely wobbling interior." These tarts are rich (lots of butter, cream and eggs), simple and wholesome, prepared in straightforward ways with uncomplicated steps. As Day-Lewis explains, they are not "state-of-the-art, designer-dream, fashionable" fare (even if she tells us that Julia Roberts loves the Treacle Tart), but rather "foods to console and please on the highest order." The favorite tarts of well-known chefs appear regularly throughout the pages, tweaked and appropriately credited. Classics such as Onion Tart, Plain Apple Tart and that English favorite, Bakewell Tart, coexist with more flamboyant fare, such as Fennel, Taleggio and Cardamom Tart, Mjuk Mandeltarta (soft almond tart) and a "beauteous, sluttish, fall of the Roman Empire" Roast Fig and Honey Tart with Cointreau. With quiet sophistication, Day-Lewis presents a beautiful and useful book to savor on many levels.

From Library Journal
Day-Lewis (yes, she's Daniel's sister) is a well-known British food writer whose work has appeared here in Food & Wine and other magazines. She has a wonderful, somewhat breezy style, and the recipes in her new book are mouthwatering: Smoked Bacon and Garlic Tart, Fennel, Taleggio, and Cardamom Tart, Roast Fig Tart with Cointreau (which she describes as "a beauteous and sluttish, Fall of the Roman Empire kind of dessert"). In addition to her own recipes, there is a section called "Other People's Tarts," recipes from chefs, writers, and good home cooks. The text is lavishly illustrated with color photographs, but the book is a comfortable size for actually using in the kitchen (rather than leaving on the coffee table). Highly recommended.

Attractive Book of Unusual Recipes. Beginners Beware
By B. Marold
`The Art of the Tart' and `Tarts With Tops On' by noted English culinary writer, Tamasin Day-Lewis both have the outward appearance of books on the express line to the discount table. And, while many good books have suffered that fate, that appearance should not be held against these two volumes. It is important to distinguish this book from the excellent volumes on general pastry making such as Rose Levy Beranbaum's `The Pie and Pastry Bible' or Nick Malgieri's `Perfect Pastry' or Flo Brakker's `The Simple Art of Perfect Baking, or Gayle Ortiz' `The Village Baker's Wife'. It is also playing in a different league than the excellent `Mes Tartes' by Christine Ferber. All of these spend many pages on the ins and outs of pastry technique. Ms. Ferber's volume is especially interesting if you are devoted to the French approach to pastry, which is just a bit different than what you will get from the American experts.

When I first browsed through Ms. Day-Lewis' books, the absence of the heavy concentration on technique and the many familiar names of classic tart and pie recipes had me discounting the books as not worth my attention. The opening tart with a top on was nothing more than a classic chicken potpie that I have made following better instructions from James Beard.

The first thing that began redeeming the books in my eyes was the quality of the writing. Ms. Day-Lewis has a way with phrases that seems to owe more than a little from the writing style of M.F.K. Fisher, although the writer to which she seems to pay the greatest homage is Jane Grigson. In spite of a few misstatements such as the notion that pastry making was a science, `but not an exact science', her general observations are quite a pleasure to read and make me want to read more of her books.

Both books include chapters on `other people's recipes', and some of the most interesting material is in these chapters. Some of the borrowing is from Nigel Slater who is a writer like Day-Lewis and unlike Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver, whose works have not made a very big impression on this side of the pond. Others are attributed to Claudia Roden, who has made a big splash over here. Many others are attributed to friends and relatives. Regardless of the source, all these recipes are pretty far removed from your garden-variety tomato tart. Some recipes such as Michel Roux's Tourte au Jambon et Tomme de Pyrenees require ingredients such as black truffles and hard Pyrenees sheep's milk cheese which are just a bit to dear or too much trouble to acquire. Others in this chapter are both very simple and very fetching. Two that caught my eye were Nigel Slater's Stilton, Onion, and Potato "Frying Pan" pie and Deborah's Luxury Meat Loaf Pie. Both recipes are small variations on very common dishes, but the small improvements are worth a bundle of raves at the dinner table.

The next chapter of recipes for pies covers eight variations on apple pie. Aside from the plain vanilla apple pie, all were pretty unusual, but certainly not difficult. I did miss a recipe for Tart Tatin, but I suspect I probably already have five or six recipes for this classic on my shelves already. Another reason the Tart Tatin does not appear with these apple pies is because the first book already includes nine recipes for lidless apple tarts, including the famous Tatin dessert. The first book also includes a perfect recipe for entertaining with an English theme, a treacle tart.

The next recipe chapter of pie recipes covers classic American pies. Among these eleven recipes are peach pie, pecan pie, blueberry pie, pumpkin pie, and key lime pie, but no Pennsylvania Dutch molasses cake, which of course is much more of a pie than a cake.

Among the recipes for sweet pies, there are a few with unusual ingredients such as gooseberries and a few which simply did not appeal to me such as the raspberry ice cream pie, which I considered a misnomer, as the filling was not a true churned ice cream but more like a simple frozen custard.

If your cookbook collecting leans toward those that look good and read well, then these books are for you. They are also very interesting if you have a special attraction to baking tarts and pies, and already have the basic techniques securely under your belt. If you are a novice with pastry, then I suggest you take a by on these and check out the four titles I cited at the beginning of the review.

I will note that for the very nice binding, photography, and the build-in page marking ribbon, these books are very reasonably priced, which make them even more attractive if you are fond of attractive culinary books.

If you are always on the lookout for unusual pie and tart recipes, don't give it another thought and put in your order for these lovelies.

Tart magic!
By Matiqua
My family and I enjoy eating quiches and tarts very much. We love the creamy filling and the comforting warmth, especially when encased in a light, crunchy, delicate pastry case. They are so easy and practical, as you can make them ahead and reheat them.
I usually made them using ready-made pastry, because my attempts at making my own were always a bit laboursome, it was always a bit difficult to roll the pastry and not to tear it, and somehow it was always a bit undercooked (maybe that was due to the fact that I used rice instead of baking beans, but now I have bought them). Those times are over! Now I can make perfect, crisp and tender pastry, and the best part is that it rolls in a breeze! I don't know what was wrong with my method, but now that I have this recipe I don't even think of buying ready-made pastry anymore.
The recipes for the different fillings are wonderful, too. We have found great quiches that we love to have for dinner, like Spinach and Anchovy Tart ( we make it with yougurt instead of cream and it is delicious!). Or the different ones with fish, or Onion Tart,or the Flamiche, mmm...yummy!
The sweet ones are very good too. I made the Chocolate Pecan Pie for a dinner party and it got raves. I love the Lemon Tart and I could go on like this...
Well, the recipes are very rich, but I find that you can easily substitute lighter ingredients (like yoghurt for cream) with consistent results. At least, I often do it...
The book is heavy weight paperback, not very thick, just 144 pages. It has the picture of a tomato tartlet on the front with a silver band for the title and author. The recipes are laid out well: an introduction on how it was created, or anecdotes about the recipe; the ingredients on one side and the instructions on the other. Easy to follow and clear.
There are a few pictures of the finished tarts, even if many recipes don't have one, or have just pictures of the ingredients, that's why I'm giving it four stars. (I like to be tempted by pictures!)
At the back of the book there is a chapter on pastry, with the instuctions on how to make all the different kinds (shortcrust, pâte sucrée, pâte sablée, puff pastry).
I found this book really useful to help me making better tarts and quiches and I would suggest it to anyone that likes baking.

The quick and the good....
By Dianne Foster
In this day of working away from home, shopping after work and fixing a meal on the run, THE ART OF THE TART is a gift. I discovered this book in the Washington Post Food section, which seems to be dedicated to folks like me who don't want to restort to scambled eggs, oatmeal, or fast food night after night. How wonderful to discover there are elegant dishes one can fix relatively quickly, and in most cases healthier than the fast food fix.
Day-Lewis is apparently well established in England as a food expert and has written articles for Conde-Nast and House and Garden. If you missed her in these other forms, this is a good place to start. Some of her tarts are meals, such as the 'Porcini Mushroom and Red Onion' tart or the 'Scallop, Artichoke, and Smoked Bacon' tart. Other tarts are for dessert, such as 'A Tatin of Apricots Stuffed with Almond Paste' or 'Apple Crumble Tart.' Not all tarts come in the same wrapper. While some tarts have a traditional flaky crust, others have a crust of polenta such as the 'Corn and Scallion Tart' or 'George Morley's Leek Tart' which has a cheese pastry crust. Some of the recipes Day-Lewis includes are her own, such as the 'Spinach and Anchovy' tart or the 'Asparagus' tart, and others are from friends.
There are plenty of plain tarts, and tarts with too much cholesterol, but there is a tart for everyone. According to the Washington Post, Ms Day-Lewis is the sister of Daniel. Such a talented family.
