In this groundbreaking book, Dalton Conley shows us that inequality in families is not the exception but the norm. More than half of all income inequality in this country occurs not between families but within families. Children who grow up in the same house can—and frequently do—wind up on opposite sides of the class divide. In fact, the family itself is where much inequality is fostered and developed. In each family, there exists a pecking order among siblings, a status hierarchy. This pecking order is not necessarily determined by the natural abilities of each individual, and not even by the intentions or will of the parents. It is determined by the larger social forces that envelop the family: gender expectations, the economic cost of education, divorce, early loss of a parent, geographic mobility, religious and sexual orientation, trauma, and even arbitrary factors such as luck and accidents. Conley explores each of these topics, giving us a richly nuanced understanding that transforms the way we should look at the family as an institution of care, support, and comfort.

Drawing from the U.S. Census, from the General Social Survey conducted by the University of Chicago over the last thirty years, and from a landmark study that was launched in 1968 by the University of Michigan and that has been following five thousand families, Conley has irrefutable empirical evidence backing up his assertions. In recent years, people have begun to examine family dynamics for clues to individual success. Birth order, in particular, has been a favored explanation for the differences between siblings in everything from leadership skills to romantic conquests. Now Dalton Conley, a sociology professor at NYU, reveals that indeed our siblings may affect how our lives turn out, but not in the ways we might think. Conley made an effort not to simplify the very complex familial data collected by both the United States Census, a long-term study conducted by the University of Michigan, and the University of Chicago's General Social Survey. What he found was that the differences between siblings outweigh almost every other kind of difference between any two individuals in the United States. Every family has a pecking order independent of birth order, and the differences between siblings are magnified by poverty and disenfranchisement. In these situations, families invest in the sibling most likely to succeed, leading to stark divides, even class differences between family members. Oddly, the choice of successful sibling is made independent of birth order, parental attention, or innate talents, and becomes a tacit agreement among family members. Conley uses a plethora of examples, including Bill and Roger Clinton, to illustrate his findings, and readers will nod knowingly at many of the ubiquitous family behaviors that set siblings up for differing life paths. The surprising fact that sibling differences account for three-quarters of all differences between individuals in explaining American economic inequality acts as a challenge for NYU sociology professor Conley. Drawing on economic studies conducted by the U.S. Census, University of Michigan and University of Chicago, and interviewing hundreds of subjects, Conley illuminates provocative findings. Counter to the belief that birth order predicts a child's success and role within a family, he argues that what really matters is family size, parental time and attention, and how much of the family's financial resources are available for the child. Conley concludes from his findings that parents can more easily affect their children's development by their choices of family size and spacing of births than by attempts to move up the economic ladder. He is candid about the limitations of current surveys and discusses the complexities of studying an institution whose modern workings are contingent on slippery factors (e.g., gender, race, class). Despite all he's learned, the staggering number of factors affecting the workings of a family frustrates Conley's desire to come up with hard and fast rules. Yet from what he has found thus far, he can proclaim, "the family is not a haven in a harsh world. It is part and parcel of that world, rat race and all. Inequality, after all, starts at home." Although Conley's academic prose may challenge general readers , graduate students looking for thesis topics will be well served: he has tons of ideas where research could go to get more answers.

mediocre take on fascinating topic

I was disappointed in this book. The topic has probably been of interest to everyone at one point or another in their lives; who has not wondered at least once if they would be leading a different kind of life if they were the oldest, youngest, or only child?
While I appreciated the liveliness of the many examples used to illustrate the author's points, the luridness of some made it hard to take the evidence as anything but purely anecdotal. At times, it seemed like the author was rather too-eager explain how he arrived at his conclusions. There is nothing wrong with that necessarily, but I think most readers of psych books written for a general audience are willing to take more on faith than the author expected.
The most original point for me was the author's declaration that birth order didn't always mean that a child would go on to be a leader, a follower, a failure or whatever. Birth order does not necessarily predict a child's personality either. Instead, divorce, death, remarriage, economic background, helps determine how many resources a parent has to divide amongst his/her children. In fact, economic difference is often wider between adult siblings than it is between children from different families.
This book will probably hold your attention, but some readers may be left wanting more hard evidence and less anecdotes.

Interesting but Incomplete

This book was a very interesting read with a disappointing conclusion. Conley presents convincing evidence for which siblings succeed and why, but lacks an effective ending making the book feel incomplete. It is as if the author is afraid to make a solid statement about what his findings mean. Still, there is a lot of good information here and I would recommend it to anyone interested in this topic with the understanding that it isn't particularly well written.

Absolute crap

This is someone rambling with endless anecdotes for almost 300 pages. This is not a research based book. I was expecting the book to tell me what all the research on siblings has to say and what I can do to maximize my children's chances at success. Instead it was endless anecdotes about sibling pairs where one was more successful than the other and who knows why?

Luckily I only took it out from the library so I didn't waste any money. Here's the whole book boiled down: more children = less resources for the children, middle children are generally worse off than oldest/youngest. Done. I just saved you all hours of your lives.

The Nantucket Restaurants Cookbook is exactly that, a collection of menus from a whole host of restaurants on Nantucket Island. And for such a small island, Nantucket has a lot to offer the hungry gourmet. Samara Farber Mormar, a former chef, is a Nantucket resident and loves everything about the island. Her coauthor, Melissa Clark, is a cookbook writer and columnist for The New York Times. Together they interviewed the chefs and owners of 18 Nantucket restaurants and wrote a chapter on each which includes a little history, a little personality, some local color, and a showstopping menu.

Black-Eyed Susan's doesn't advertise, take reservations, or publish a phone number, but there's always a line out the door. With beautiful, summery dishes such as their Tuna Tartare with Cucumbers and Sriracha Aioli and Lemon Tart with Spring Strawberry Sorbet, it's no wonder. You'd expect The Boarding House to serve simple food, but you'd be wrong. Angela and Seth Raynor met as culinary students, and while he was cooking French on Nantucket at the Chanticleer, she was cooking in France. Today, their love for all things French flavors their "new American" cuisine in dishes such as the refreshing Cold Tomato Infusion with Lobster. The Club Car is revered for its food and service far beyond the island's shores. Their Grilled Veal Medallions with Fresh Horseradish Cream and Poached Oysters is more than worth the time it takes to prepare. While you can't enjoy the setting of The Galley on Cliffside Beach--"smack dab on the beach"--without going there, Goat-Cheese-Stuffed Squash Blossoms with Grilled Onion and Organic Tomato Vinaigrette and Rosewater Angel Food Cake with Blackberries and Lemon Verbena Syrup help to explain the entrancing serenity of the island described by every one of these chefs. Only a handful of the chefs are Nantucket natives; most of them migrated to the island, or happened upon it. But once there, they fell in love with it and stayed. The result is a plethora of fine dining establishments, and although many are only open during the summer season, much of their business is repeat.

So if you always imagined Nantucket cuisine as fried clams on the beach, think again. "Sophisticated food and warm hospitality" is the order of the day. Come and meet the generous food community from Nantucket, and follow their lead--maybe all that island serenity comes just as much from painted plates of Banana Bread French Toast with Bananas Foster and Crème Fraîche as it does from the windswept dunes and the sapphire sea. --Leora Y. Nantucket, as the authors explain, has come a long way from its whaling-village, hardtack-and-salt-pork culinary roots. Today the island's menus rival their urban counterparts in diversity and cosmopolitanism, reflecting centuries of influence from immigrant seafarers and well-heeled visitors, Portuguese fishermen and classically trained chefs. The authors include a wide representation of culinary styles, from classic Escoffier at the Chanticleer to uninhibited Asian fusion at Black-Eyed Susan's. The selections, though eclectic, like Hot-Smoked Salmon Beignets with Rose Pepper Beurre Blanc and Grilled Red Endive Garnished with Caviar and Beet Ravioli with Truffle Butter Sauce, are bound by a certain thematic unity: they tend to showcase seasonal ingredients and fresh seafood. Although bursting with ambitious ingredients and no shortcuts, to Clark and Mormar's credit, even daunting techniques (e.g., scented pastry creams, oil infusions) are presented accessibly. This regional-interest book is as much travel book as it is cookbook. Hazlegrove's pictures dwell equally on Nantucket Island scenery as on the food presented. The 18 chapters, featuring one restaurant at a time, detail the history of the restaurants and the families or entrepreneurs who own them. The recipes basically one menu from each restaurant are heavy on fresh seafood and exotic ingredients, such as lemon verbena and m che, that many readers will find unfamiliar or unavailable. Granted, many people visit Nantucket Island, and it has a significant romantic mystique, so readers may appreciate the appendixes, which tell how to travel to the island, where to stay, and where else to eat when there. Whether cookbook or travel book, Hazlegrove's photographs are nice, Clark and Mormar's text is well written, and the recipes are tempting. A Beautiful picture of the Nantucket Restaurant Scene

Though I've never been to Nantucket, this book absolutely makes me want to go, the next time I'm on the East Coast. In the meantime, I can flip through this gorgeous book and dream. The photography is alluring and recipes so inventive and interesting. Some of them seem a little cheffy, but for the most part they look easy enough to make for a summer dinner party. Plus, the profiles of the restaurantuers make me want to try their recipes! It makes a great gift.

Recipe with error

While I'm liking this cookbook, I've noticed an error in the recipe for Grilled Veal Medallions with Fresh Horseradish Cream and Poached Oysters. The recipe sounds delicious, but the accompanying picture doesn't match the recipe at all. The only common element is the veal medallions and I'm not even certain about that. I was hoping there would be an errata shown, but haven't seen it.

Not good enough for a 5; very basic

I've been through countless AP review books; I'm a junior and I've taken 4 AP exams, and I'm set to take 5 more in the next two weeks.
I feel my knowledge is very intimate on AP books and prep.
I say this because I think the people on Amazon tend to rate negative reviews poorly and positive reviews nicely, and I'd like to boost my credibility. Well folks, face it: some of these big name books just don't cut it, and I'm telling you that Princeton Review's AP Chemistry does not cut it.

While it is a good review, it does not have enough content nor explanations to be considered a premier test prep book. The explanations are brief, as if they assume that you have adequate knowledge on the topic already. They leave some holes, leaving you implying at best.
Equilibrium, by far the most complex and difficult subject on the AP Chemistry exam, is way undercovered. The chapter covers nothing that shows up on their practice problems, and the explanation is hurried and concise.

On the flipside, The Princeton Review does an outstanding job of boxing all of the important formulas and explaining the variables. It is a good idea to put these formulas on flashcards.
Another positive is the teenage-friendly words, which may go far in explaining concepts in ways that a college textbook may not.

While the Princeton Review delivers on some concepts, it falls tremendously short on others. It's exactly what it advertises to be: a review.

Quite Below My Expectations...

I believe the best time to review a book, especially one that is a test/AP Exam prep book is when the test is actually over; this way, the reviewer can make comparisons as to what was effectively covered.
Princeton Review has helped me very much in the past, so I have absolutely nothing against the company; however, this book was dissapointing. The actual AP exam's questions were much more challenging than the ones in the book. This really game me a false sense of security. 97% of BOTH practice tests (two are provided in the PR AP Chem. book) were no where similar to the questions on the actual AP exam. Not to mention the FRQ's in the book were entirely different than those on the actual AP exam.
What this book lacked were the lab questions, which (in this year's AP Exam) was tested quite heavily. In fact, a whole 5-6 part FRQ was devoted solely on. Thus, my advice to you, if you are looking for a good practice book. Don't get one. Go to the College Board's website, find the AP Chemistry site, find their old posted Exams. Practice those. The questions there, in retrospect, are the ones you will probably see in future AP Chem Exams. And, if you REALLY know how to use [...] search engine tools, you can probably find a plethora of old AP exams on other Chemistry AP teachers' websites.

Great for the night before

For the student with many AP exams, finding a concise review guide that elimintates the fluff is the ultimate challenge. Luckily this book provides exactly that. I read every chapter of this book in only about an hour and a half and took the AP test the next day and can honestly say that it helped me with those questions that are purely fact/knowledge based (colors of solutions, descriptive chemistry, etc.) that previously were a challenge but with the help of this book became just easy points. If a student isn't confident with a particular section, there is a multitude of comprehensive multiple choice and essay questions at the end of every chapter that can test his knowledge. I reccomend the Princeton Review books for all science courses.

Another wonderful and touching Foley read!

After meeting Billy Blade in "Lord of Ice", I was so looking forward to this book that I was a bit worried that it would not live up to my expectations. I worried for nothing. I loved this book. As others have pointed out, contrary to the title, this is really Billy's story and if Billy doesn't touch your heart either you don't have one or it's made of stone!
After fleeing his abusive father at 13, Billy eventually winds up a gang leader in London's slums. He may be a criminal, but he's got principles, taking responsibility for his people and also covertly assisting the government on occasion - that's how he knows Jacinda's spy brother Lucien. And Lucien is the only person who knows his true identity - second son of the Marquess of Truro and St Austell! That Lucien sure can keep secrets!
Lady Jacinda is the spoiled baby sister of the Knight clan. Her protective older brothers are practically smothering her and when they arrange a marriage to Ian, Lord Griffith, it's more than she can bear. Though she adores Ian, he's more like another brother to her and so she decides to flee to Paris. At a coaching inn she's pickpocketed and pursues the thief into an alley - and into the middle of a turf battle between two of London's toughest gangs. She is discovered by Billy and taken back to his headquarters refusing to tell him who she is or why she's out alone in the streets.
Over the next few hours they talk, with Jacinda sharing more than she intends about her hopes, plans and her infamous mother, while both notice a budding attraction. Jacinda is amazed to find that he actually listens to her - something no one else does. I fell in love with Billy when he says to himself in astonishment "she likes me"! How cute. But when Billy discovers who she is, he returns her to her family much to her displeasure.
Events force Billy to reunite with his father and reclaim his title, Earl of Rackford, and so Billy and Jacinda meet again. He pursues her, she tries to elude him for she has her own plans. But a relationship develops and it's very sweet and fun to watch. He evolves from street tough to gentleman while she matures after seeing Lizzie's heartbreak at the hands of her rogue brother Alec as well as learning more about Billy and his difficult past. Their mutual affection and respect make you root for this great couple!
As always, I look forward to the next installment. It's Lizzie's so we'll see if Alec can redeem himself! And once again we are teased with mention of black sheep Jack whose story I am just dying for! I love this family - reading these books is like spending time with old friends. Keep 'em coming Gaelen!

Foley does NOT disappoint -- EXCELLENT read!

Jacinda Knight, sister to the infamous Knight brothers featured in books such as "The Duke", "Lord of Fire," and "Lord of Ice" is a headstrong, spirited girl who attempts to flee London instead of facing an arranged marriage to a very nice, but brotherly-type man.
By pure accident, she meets Billy Blade, a gang leader, on the London streets at night. Billy is captivated by Jacinda's charm, wit, and beauty, and after a course of events, decides to pursue her.. as the Earl of Rackford, his birthright.
This, I'd have to say, was one of Gaelen Foley's best works.. if not the VERY best. From page 66, I was in love with Billy.. sensitive, gorgeous, charming.. with a slight shy streak that is so arresting. This is more Billy's story than Jacinda's, in fact.. because even though you will love Jacinda as the heroine, you will see Billy mature from a street thief to an Earl. You will feel his embarassment, his longings..
An extremely touching read, and one that I'd highly recommend. Even if you haven't read the previous books in the series (I mentioned them above), you will not feel lost to the storyline. Another book that I highly recommend in this series is "Lord of Fire", which is also extraordinarily written, about the sensual Lucien Knight, and prudish Alice.

Not the best of the series

This is a book I have mixed feelings about. There were moments I really enjoyed it and others that had me going elsewhere for entertainment.

Billy is definitely the star of the book, but he's not as streetwise or as physically powerful as one would expect of a man in his position. His transformation into a gentleman is too easy for one who moved into a life of crime on the streets at 13.

Jacinda is described as spirited, rebellious, vivacious, and so on, but for me she came across as rather staid and placid as a general rule. In the following book (Devil Takes a Bride), I hardly recognize her; they seem to be different charactaers. That Jacinda is the one described but rarely making an appearance here.

The plot was only so-so. The book's a solid 3 stars: a decent read but nothing to make it stand out from the crowd.

Pretty Helpful

This book is pretty good if you want to study for the GRE Literature in English Subject test. The most helpful part of this book is that it gives 'A', 'B' and 'C' lists of material that is likely to show up on the exam. It also summarizes some of the more important works. The book basically acts as a study guide as well as a strategy guide for the test. Not only does it talk about the works and authors one should know, it also gives tips on how to answer questions on the test that one doesn't know.

Along with this book, you MUST get certain books in the Norton Anthology series (Middle Ages, Romantic Age, Victorian Age and Modern Age). Even the book recommends that you do this.

Descent but with flaws

In general, I found this text useful. More than anything, it gave me a better understanding of the thought process behind the test. I am used to standardized exams in which the test taker is expected to have a decent chance of answering a large percentage of the questions; the GRE in Literature does not operate under the same principle. After reading this booklet, I understood that the GRE in Literature is not something you're supposed to master; it's something you are supposed to survive. That tip alone helped me prepare mentally for the exam.

In terms of actual test prep material, the book provides very basic breakdowns of the items you are most likely to see on the test. The book's explanations are generally helpful. Additionally, the book has a playful style which makes reading the whole thing easier. This feels more like studying with an entertaining and knowledgeable friend than with a dry and stuff professor.

However, the book does have some serious flaws. First, it needed a significant proof reading. There are several typos, places in which type setting mangles meaning, and one answer to the practice test that provides answers completely unrelated to the question under consideration. This last mistake was particularly frustrating, as it was obvious and egregious. Moreover, I at times found the book's playful tone to stretch into condescension. This is entirely a personal reaction, but when reviewing the answers to the provided practice test, I was frustrated to see the phrase "This should have been easy" next to answers about materials that were never covered in the book nor seemed to me to be common knowledge (admittedly my knowledge of 17th century French poets is low). Again, this is personal, but it happened enough for me that it hurt my interest in the book.

Final verdict: worth the price, but only because the price wasn't outrageous. If you can, I'd recommend also tracking down Norton's Anthology of English Literature. It is mentioned several times in the Princeton Review textbook and is a good guide for a lot of the material on the test.

Pretty Helpful

This book isn't perfect, but I found it quite useful. It helped me focus my studies, instead of just trying to reread every piece of literature ever written. It also helped me prepare psychologically by showing me what the test looks like and helping me pace myself. After I took the practice test, I felt much calmer going in to take the actual exam.

Modern Bombay is home to fourteen million people, two-thirds of them packed into neighborhoods where the population density reaches one million per square mile. Its official name is now Mumbai, but, as the author points out, the city has always had "multiple aliases, as do gangsters and whores." Mehta, who lived there as a child, has a penchant for the city's most "morally compromised" inhabitants: the young Hindu mafiosi who calmly recollect burning Muslims alive during riots twelve years ago; the crooked policeman who stages "encounter killings" of hoods whose usefulness has expired; the bar girl, adorned with garlands of rupees, whose arms are scarred from suicide attempts. Mehta's brutal portrait of urban life derives its power from intimacy with his subjects. After clandestine meetings with some of Bombay's most wanted assassins, he notes, "I know their real names, what they like to eat, how they love, what their precise relationship is with God."

Thus, Mehta brings the perspective of both newcomer and insider as he explores various aspects of Bombay life, from setting up residence to exploring the hugely successful domestic film industry; from detailing Bombay's sex industry to profiling the reasons behind India's own "September 11," the 1993 riots and bombings that exposed a vast enmity between extremist Hindus and Muslims. Found some; lost some

I actually agree with a lot of the reviews written on this book, especially in terms of the specifics they have captured on what works in this book and what does not. The purpose of this review thus is only to either reiterate the key points briefly, or to add a couple of new ones.

0. Context setting: I lived in Bombay for 6 years, hope to never live there again, but am fascinated by it, and can't read enough about it. I wasn't directly exposed to either the underbelly or the glamour of Bombay, but was definitely aware of it - something you can never avoid if you live there. My perspective is thus much more middle-class, which I think would be the broadest perspective on Bombay.

1. Bombay is a city begging to be written about, and despite the almost sudden rise in interest in writing about this city, there are still only a few one can really read, so Suketu's attempt is a welcome addition.

2. Suketa's heart in the right place, but his execution is confused. He clearly wants to capture the heart and soul of Bombay, but seems to be limited by his obvious journalistic and dispassionate style. At times the city gets the better of him and he lets go, but not often enough. This is in my opinion is the biggest drawback of the book - it's just stuck somewhere in between an extended non-fiction journal piece and a string of stories linked together by the theme of a city.

3. The book is way too long. Enough people have already pointed this out, so I won't belabour the point, but really, the obsession with writing about the Mafia is totally tedious. If that was what the book was intended to be about, I would have no complaints, but it wasn't, and I think it's unfair to devote half the book (directly or indirectly) to this subject.

4. The author is clearly star-struck (film stars, political stars, underworld stars, you-name-it stars), which biases the content in the book and makes it disproportionately and painfully heavy towards the warped un-reality that stars live in.

5. The depth of exploration of various subjects is clearly inconsistent, with some being ridiculously long (refer 3 above), and some painfully short. I am not sure whether that's because of the author's biases, or because of the information detail he was able to elicit on various subjects, but irrespective, it leads to some frustration.

In closing, let me state that I recognize that this review sounds harsh, but it is not really intended to be, and is just meant to prepare you for the long journey you will embark upon. In the end, all the above notwithstanding, I would still recommend this book as a second or third one if you want to get to know, and I mean really know, Bombay. My unequivocal first choice remains Shantaram, a book which never misses the pulse of the city in its much longer 1000 page journey, and remains the ultimate paean to Bombay.

Too Much of a Town That's Too Much

This is definitely not a tourist guide to the sunny and acceptable side of the teeming and monstrous city of Bombay. Suketu Mehta, an American transplant, decided to return to his hometown and investigate its endless and often horrific underbelly - the world that the vast majority of its inhabitants have learned to live in. Underlying Mehta's general coverage of poverty, overcrowding, crime, ethnic conflict, and black market economics are in-depth character sketches of people surviving the dark side of Bombay. My favorite portion of the book covers Mehta's time with a forlorn exotic dancer that he calls Monalisa, while he also delves deeply into the lives of crime lords, street thugs, a harried police detective, a budding poet living on the streets, and even a family of Jain monks, all of whom have stories that would rarely if ever be told in more upscale narratives. This all makes the book unexpectedly harsh, vulgar, violent, and surprisingly fascinating from a human point of view.

The only problem is that Mehta doesn't know when to stop, over-covering his subjects to the point of exhaustion, and occasionally going off on unfocused tangents, such as the story of his involvement in producing a cheesy Bollywood movie. The book mostly managed to keep me interested through all its 500+ pages, as Metha would eventually introduce intriguing new people or situations. But each chapter is usually way too long in itself, and sometimes it feels like the book will never end as you long for Mehta to wrap up one story and either get to the next or just bring the book to an authoritative conclusion. Mehta has created a highly intriguing book about an overwhelming city that would scare away the weak-hearted, but his prose tends to get overwhelming too. [~doomsdayer520~]
