Reading Pictures: A History of Love and Hate, by Alberto Manguel

Reading Pictures looks at the work of great artists–from the intensely familiar to the undiscovered–and examines the stories behind them, tracing the passage of life into art. Pablo Picasso torments his mistress Dora Maar and then paints brilliant studies of her grief-crumpled face; these evolve into the weeping woman in his great indictment of fascism, Guernica. Manguel untangles what this story, and countless others, shows us of our twin impulses toward creation and destruction. A tour of the psyche more than of the museum, this book dares to ponder, with contagious wonder, why we create.

Not since John Berger’s influential Ways of Seeing has an essayist so eloquently examined what happens when we are moved by profound works of art and how we decode a wordless language that touches us so intimately. Richly illustrated, Reading Pictures shows us that there is no limit to the stories we may find if we look with care and delight.

From Publishers Weekly
After an international success with his prize-winning A History of Reading, writer, novelist, translator and editor Manguel, a Buenos Aires ex-pat now living in Canada, returns with a series of meditations on why great art moves us. Twelve chapters focus individually on painters from Caravaggio to Picasso and Joan Mitchell, the photographer Tina Modotti and architect Peter Eisenman an intellectually ambitious range supported by an impressive section of notes at the back of the book suggesting familiarity with a vast array of scholarly books. Yet the book's subtitle and frequent use of the first person betray the fact that this is less a work of art history than a catalogue of reactions, many of which are triggered by excruciatingly banal questions: "But can every picture be read? Or at least, can we create a reading?" leads to the assertion that "[the] attempt not to communicate is at least as complex as the attempt to communicate, and undoubtedly as old." The chapter "Pablo Picasso: the Image as Violence" contains this observation: "most men in Western art suffer stoically." The wandering style that worked so well in History is less masterful here, and the lack of sustained thought throughout makes it hard to imagine most readers (of either gender) stoically getting to the end. (Sept.)Forecast: Many buyers of A History of Reading, which was translated into 22 languages, will pick up this book by association, as will readers looking for the next How Proust Will Change Your Life. The result will be better than average sales, but not a History-style breakout.

From Library Journal
The author of an eclectic body of work (e.g., Dictionary of Imaginary Places, History of Reading), Manguel turns his eye to the art world in this engaging and learned exploration of 11 works of art. Manguel mixes art history and artists' biographies with a liberal dose of his own wide-ranging thoughts and knowledge. He explores works from a diverse collection of artists, ranging across Western art history, from the ancient Greek painter Philoxenus, to Lavinia Fontana and Caravaggio, to artists of our own century, including Picasso, Joan Mitchell, and Tina Modotti. Reminding us that much of what he says is his own opinion (and often contrary to commonly held views), Manguel challenges us to think about the work at hand and create our own reading of it. Though some, such as this reviewer, found the author's ideas fresh, informative, and entertaining, his style may not be for all tastes. Recommended for collections with patrons interested in art theory.

From Booklist
The art of reading is an infinitely fertile subject, one Manguel has made his own, first in his trailblazing A History of Reading (1996) and now in this intellectual joyride through various "readings" of images. Reversing the traditional chronological approach to art history, he begins his imaginative journey in front of a large abstract diptych by Joan Mitchell, embarking on an enlivening discussion of abstract art's "attempt not to communicate." He then goes to the opposite extreme and energetically decodes the involved iconography of medieval Christian painting, followed by insights into how photographs manipulate and censor reality. His moving profile of photographer and activist Tina Modotti, who sacrificed art to good works, prompts musings on how social attitudes define images, especially of the human body. And finally, in his cogent and fresh inquiry into Western portraiture, Manguel maps new terrain in his intrepid readings of Picasso, the sixteenth-century Italian painter Lavinia Fontana, and the contemporary Canadian artist Marianna Gartner, all of whom reveal the thin line between the monstrous and the sublime, the self and others. Reading Pictures? Where are they?
By Musing in Montreal
I agree with the last reviewer that the quality of the paper and the type of print are very off-putting. But more than that, where are the pictures being discussed? For Joan Mitchell's "Two Pianos," the main subject of chapter 2, I had to put down the book and go to the Internet to find a reproduction of the work in question! He does much better with Marianna Gartner - in fact, in that chapter we are treated to half a dozen of this artist's paintings, some in color, albeit not very good reproductions. The chapters are uneven in the handling of the material: the chapter on Gartner is very thought-provoking while his chapter on Picasso is nothing if not predictable. I would have been willing to pay more for the book and would have enjoyed it more had the paper, the print and the quality of the reproductions (think "glossy!") been better.

Reading Pictures A history of Love and Hate
By P. M. C. King
While I know the book from previous reading I am commenting on the quality of the paper and print. This is disappointing and I think you should contact your publishers. This is not the quality of paper for a book to keep. I would willingly pay a little extra for a better quality

Thank you Paula King
