Top Notch

Don't let the title fool you if you are taking the GRE you are not going to study at the last minute, but this crash course is much needed. With that said this book was a pleasant surprise. The concepts are straight forward and detailed. I have gotten other books, and this book has taught me more than them combined. There are no long explanations just to the point tips and tricks on solving everything on the new GRE. This is a great book to pick up if you are not sure what you need to focus on in your study. You are able to see your strengths and weaknesses then focus your attention on building what you don't know. Not only is the book impressive but the price is as well; it is highly recommended.

Splurge and get a real guide.

Definitely would not recommend. In summary, the book offers nothing new and the errors in the book make it not even worth the low price.

The strategies they suggest in this book are the same as suggested in any book, but condensed: use time wisely, read only as much as you must, use your scratch paper, eliminate wrong answers rather than looking for right ones, skip questions you are spending too much time on and come back later, use your scratch paper (yes, I've already said it, but people tend to skip this).

Some of the reminders they give you about math are very, very helpful; in particular, the tips, tricks, and strategies relating to square roots and Pythagorean Triples about right triangles are not only shortcuts, but for some geometry problems, they are required knowledge. If you've forgotten about 30-60-90 triangles and isosceles right triangles, you may not be able to solve some area problems, so for those of us who, like myself, have never been good at geometric and spatial reasoning, these tips are score-savers.

However, I do have some issues with their other strategies.

For the reading comp, they suggest never reading a whole passage. Well, that's not surprising, we were taught this for reading-heavy seminars in college where we were scheduled to discuss the reading, anyway, and when you have 500 pages to read in a week you can't get bogged down in unnecessary details, only main ideas.

Unfortunately, their method seemed to backfire. While you don't read the whole passage on the first run-through by their method, you end up going back and fishing for the answer for the many specific questions - ESPECIALLY in the case of "all of the following are true EXCEPT." You have to read most of the passage, anyway, both because the sentences mean nothing out of context and because the detail you're looking for may be tucked in a sentence you didn't read. Especially because the GRE *does* have those meticulous questions and not only vague main idea questions, you may end up bewildered and having to the read the whole passage again, in its entirety. Time waster, not time saver.

I also would not recommend the "guess and test" as a valid method for the more abstract math problems. When a word problem, for example, is dealing only with variables as relative to each other, it makes more sense to set up an equation (or inequality) than to plug in random numbers and then try *every single answer choice* to see which works. Now we are not all math majors, and some of us may not have taken any math since high school, so maybe we'd rather deal with numbers than variables. But in some instances, the "guess and test" method wastes way more time than the algebraic method. Testing all the answer choices is a good way to check your work if you have time to go back to it, but often it's quicker to do the problem the proper way than to test every single choice (doubly so when the right answer is the very last choice).

Guess and test, however, is the only real way to do some of the quantitative comparison sets, so I've no complaint there, but in general it is not a strategy, it's a last resort.

Moving further, their explanation of dividing or multiplying exponents with the same base is "expand them out" rather than "divide = subtract the exponents" and "multiply = add the exponents." When raising an exponential function to a power (e.g. (2^4)^4), then you multiply the exponents (=2^16). Expanding this out just wastes time, especially on the off-chance you get a number raised to a large power. I don't know why they would even recommend this.

But those complaints are a personal preference for technique and not entirely why I am giving the book a poor review. After all, those strategies are pretty standard across the board, regardless of whose prep book you read.

The main gripe I had was with the very, very poor editing of this book. In the early skills-building chapters, they occasionally provide sample questions and never give an answer. In one instance, they even explicitly wrote that the answer could be found at the end of the chapter, but when you hunt for it... It's nowhere to be found. Not in that chapter, not in any other chapter, not at the end of the book in the drill answer key. There were many minor typos - "same direction" was written as "some direction," "sent comp" as "sent camp," etc. etc. Sure, this is nitpicky, but it shows carelessness (which is the kind of tendency the GRE is designed to exploit and punish!).

There were also, however, some major typographical errors or editing oversight that inhibited comprehension. For example, the following (from a paragraph introducing the types of quantitative reasoning questions): "...All that Apply consisting of three up to a possible eith [sic] answer choices,..."

More damningly, in one of their examples of a quant comp question, they eliminate choices A and C, then choice B, leaving only D... But at the end of the paragraph, they conclude the answer is C... which they'd already eliminated in the first go.

Clearly the answer is D based on the work, but I, for one, was thrown for a loop seeing this error. This isn't a simple "Oh, a typo, moving on," this is a, "What if by some chance this is not a typo? Then my whole understanding of quantitative comparison is being threatened. Crap, I am so screwed."

On that note, they do try way too hard to be "cool" and "hip," using words like "dude" and "whoa" and "ugh."

Whoa, dude. I'm looking for a concise strategy guide, not a drinking and gaming buddy. I want explanations, not dismissive interjections. I mean, like, ugh, you know?

Honestly, if you have time to read this book front to back, you have time to at least skim through a proper guide. The only big difference between the format of this book and a full guide is the number of drills and practice tests, and those are what really make the difference. The only convenience this book offers is being cheap and portable.

If money is an issue, borrow a strategy guide from the local library (believe it or not, they often will carry the most recent guide soon following publication!) or buy a used copy. If it's the portability, there are flash cards and even smartphone apps, probably e-books as well (for those who have smartphones or e-readers) with preparation strategies and drills. Past sample tests may also be found online.
