Absorbing and a Bit Biased

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to dealve into the backgound of 9/11 and the fight against terrorism. The book is very well written and extremely absorbing.
There is a a bit too much discussion of the lack of communications between Clinton and his first CIA director. I got the point after the 40th repetition of this problem. The book seems to be a bit biased against the Clinton administration, lecturing them for their non-action. (Page 142 "Although Clinton would likely have had little problem in winning public support for strong military action, he opted for doing nothing." and "The failure to respond publicly again emboldended bin Laden and his top aids."
Yet on the Bush II administration there is a bit more of a soft glove approach. In Chapter 16, after a litany of facts of lack of funding of anti-terrorism, and lack of attention, Posner is a bit of an apologist for this non-action (P. 158)"But despite the long digressions from developing a new strategy, the group did decide that the Bush administration would follow a phased strategy of escalating pressure on the Taliban so that eventually the choices facing Afghanistan's Islamic rulers would be to hand over bin Laden and expel al Qaeda or face removal from power." And then, in the face of the "facts" presented, the innexplicable statement "But Bush did not want to repeat Clinton's mistake of talking tough publicly and then not following through with strong actions." -- this from a President that had taken NO strong action prior to 9/11
Still, this is a top notch book. It is an eye opener of some of the failings on the war against terrorism by the CIA, FBI, Media and every president from Reagan, Bush I, Clinton and Bush II.
Finally, in reading this book, it became apparent to me that the same cast of characters keep popping up over and over again in acts of terrorism - such as Zubaydah, Rahman, Zawahiri and Ramzi Yousef. Makes me think that if we can arrest or kill bin Laden,and his top lieutenants real progress will have been made.

A MUST Read!!!!

I have been reading many books on Bin Laden, Al Quada, Muslim extremist and also on the above in relation to law enforcement (CIA, FBI, INS, NSA, etc.), Our Presidential Administrations and to Congress (law makers) as it all relates to 9-11. Those books include Catastrophe by Chris Ruddy and Carl Linbacher, Jr., Breakdown by Bill Gurtz, The Sword Of the prophet by Serge Trifkovic, American Jihad by Steve Emerson, among others; and I must say this book; Why America Slept by Gerald Posner, is one of the best. It is completely documented and thoroughly sourced. It centers on the History of major terrorists attacks on the USA, and our allies in relation to the response of our intelligence agency's, State department, and the all our presidential Administration's dating from the Carter years (1976-80) to Now (2003). In Why America Slept by Gerald Posner, He details both the Political and Law enforcement's responses to Islamic based terrorism and what mistakes were made all along the way. the book does not make wild charges but details the mistakes so that we can learn from them. This book documents all of Al Quada's attacks on the US and American citizens all over the world; Documents the History of this declared war on US; and How each attack was handled my the FBI, CIA, INS And by the administrations. He shows how weak responses to terrorism emboldened the terrorists and He also documents some of the missed opportunities to get Bin Laden and Stop his organization long before 9-11. There is also a great chapter on the capture and interrogation of Abu Zubaydah which is must reading. Yes, the Book is critical; but not in any political way, there is no ax to grind hear, against any one individual or administration, its sober and reflective and is a must read for anyone and everyone who wants to know how 9-11 happened.

Posner Exposes Things That Should Upset Every American

If by the end of "Why America Slept" you aren't red with rage perhaps you should go back and watch video from 9/11 all over again. Unlike any other book so far on the subject, Gerald Posner exposes how the entire tragedy could have been prevented time and time again. From bungled law enforcement resources, to unheard cries from FBI agents, to duplicitous "allies". This book should be required reading for anyone who is serious about preventing another 9/11. I can't recommend this enough.
